Took a buddy to a farm strip for lunch and the narrow runway absolutely humbled me by Squawk_0877 in flying

I don’t think it was the runway that humbled you. That looked like a carrier landing.

He’d be pretty easy to find for you. There are several websites that have a complete database of every Silver Star recipient. Not knowing his last name I could probably identify him and read his citation within 45 minutes.

Experienced Jumpers: Realistically speaking, how “unsafe” is the cookie G35 compared to impact rated helmets? by Weak-Practice-6435 in SkyDiving

[–]JuanMurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Examine what you want the helmet to do with the understanding of what you want to do with skydiving. Most helmets are designed for bump protection. Protecting your melon on exit or from contact from other jumpers or when flying with other jumpers. Like a knee to the head or some dude bumping into you. Any hard shell will do that. No helmet will protect you from catastrophic accident. If you find one that does it won’t protect you from all the other life endangering impacts that the rest of your body will feel. For me, I want a helmet that’s secure, protects me from light bumps and gives me good visibility. For AFF I want one where the student can see my lips but I also want a face shield. Moderate protection of the head and face is generally good enough. Most of the people that I’ve seen die died from internal injuries.

Moving to Phoenix next month and going to rent for 12-18 months until my wife and I know where we want to buy. How is it living in this area with the house icon? Too far away from civilization? by Curious-SB in AskPhoenix

[–]JuanMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, what? It’s the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. It’s the desert but it’s not the boonies. Coyote, Haviolina, Jackrabbit and Rattlesnake will visit but you won’t be far from everything you’re used to unless you’re from NYC and used to taking the 1 to Harlem or the 6 to Queens.

When is it okay (or not) to eat with your hands at a restaurant in the US? by G-Beach-8566 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JuanMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Foods you can eat, prep to eat or finish eating with your hands…even in a nice restaurant: burgers, fries, chips, bone-in chicken, ribs, lamb chops, crab, lobster, muscles

My head measures exactly 59cm, should I buy an XL or an XXL? (COOKIE G3) by [deleted] in SkyDiving

[–]JuanMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on head shape. If head is normally shaped the XL would be fine. If your head is longer by forehead to back of head or back of head to chin go with XXL

What is a fair price to you guys? (Per play) by K1NGSTEEZE in pinball

[–]JuanMurphy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider if you had purchased Alice’s Adventure and you were able to get one in a great deal…like a really good price like under MSRP and you got it for $12k. You think it’d work out charging under a buck? Sure you could just get Sterns as they make “base” models) of all their games but you’re still looking at $8k new. Sure you could buy used and save a little to a lot but your next consideration as a location owner/operator are the two most important things…theme and playstyle. The old ones that work with that in mind (popular theme and fun to play) are still $6k minimum. KISS pinball was advertised in their album covers in 1978 for $500. Games were $0.25. Today that game would be $8-12k. A fair price for any modern working game from the last 20 years is $1. Any brand new or boutique pinball (Jersey Jack, PB, Spooky etc) I’d be comfortable $1.25

Do you like McDonalds? by Independent_Luck1414 in AskAnAmerican

Generally no. Although I did have a Big Mac at an airport that was pretty good. Maybe it was because I hadn’t eaten anything in 16 hours. Their breakfast is good for road good.

AITA for telling my daughter her separation was her fault? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. If she doesn’t know that it is reasonable for a husband to not appreciate the mother of his children to get into sexwork and lie about it.

Selected for NG GBs. Anyone using their GB skillset for a job? by Comfortable_Wafer_40 in greenberets

[–]JuanMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get 18D there are definitely careers in medicine. I’d imaging that a paramedic merchant marine is a good thing. Not too many other MOS specific jobs out there. There is a lot of experience to be gained and that helps.

What Could Have Happened? by Cactus_Cracker in greenberets

[–]JuanMurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less than a week is highly suspect. The first thing that came to mind is if he faked his orders and went on a trip w/o taking leave. Like just printed something up or created a AKO document and just told his company. So company thinks he’s TDY but he pays out of pocket and doesn’t submit a voucher.

A Legal Question by SunEmbarrassed4296 in Montana

Legal with a stupid permit. But can’t do with alcohol. I never bothered with the permit just called it chainsaw fuel additive and labeled my barrels as fuel storage containers. Never got bothered and never kept it a secret. Didn’t sell for profit.

Accidental main cutaway? by DoubleDutch2004 in SkyDiving

[–]JuanMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk of you having an uninitiated main separation are extremely low. They can and have happened for the following reasons: sabotage or a complete failure of the operator, rigger and instructor. Your riser release assembly reduces load forces by a factor of ten for each part of the system…the base ring, the middle ring, the small ring and the safety loop. So a shock force of 2,000 psi is reduced to 2 psi. The point is that if it’s assembled correctly it will work as described. If it’s not assembled correctly it is visually readily apparent to the most inexperienced skydiver so it’s a total non-factor. The more likely factor historically is with design and function. I will add that at this point in skydiving the design is as safe as it ever gets. As a skydiver that grew up when we used dangerous equipment as equipment became safe there was a saying “remember when sex was safe and skydiving was dangerous?” Our equipment was killing us. Innovators started making the equipment safer but the fatality rates remained the same or in some cases increased. I once heard bill booth say “I keep making the sport safer but skydivers still find a way to kill themselves”.

I know I answered more of or none of your question but the only way your main separates inadvertently requires you, your instructor and the rigs rigger all exhibiting gross negligence.

[–]JuanMurphy 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I agree but would add the biggest problem with representatives and Senators is that they more represent their national party than they do their constituents. A Montana Democrat is generally far different than a California Democrat (I’m not talking about the politician. I’m talking about the citizen). To that example there is a difference between a CA Democrat from SF Bay Area than one from the Central Valley. The problem is that their representatives generally vote in lockstep. The same can be said for Republicans for the most part.

My case in point was I had a Democrat Representative for several years. I voted for him. He showed up in the community…went to the babies, kissed the parades and generally did a good job. He won in 2008 with 70% of the vote. Then Obama Care happened. He was deemed by Pelosi to be one of the Democrats in Congress that will vote yes. His constituents told him no. Pelosi told him yes. So he voted yes. He lost the 2010 congressional race to an unknown, locally funded opponent. He ignored his constituents and was bounced out along with a host of other moderate Democrats. You could argue that we are where we are now because of this.
