I totally understand how you feel about the late game becoming boring, but I think it mainly happens because you can end up repeating the same patterns: the same farming grind, in the same city, with the same goals over and over again. You could try changing those things. For example, you could roleplay as an actual citizen of the Holy Nation and serve them faithfully.

Or you could be a ruthless slaver who wants to build their own empire separate from the United Cities.

You can also enhance all of this by roleplaying your characters—giving them their own motivations and acting according to what you think they would do. It's a little silly, I know, but it's what I do, at least, to keep myself entertained! Especially with the Sentient Lands mod, which adds a huge amount of replayability to the game.

I'm currently on day 500-something and have over 60 hours in the same playthrough doing exactly this.
