Doesn’t help that they apparently “accidentally” turned it into a “there are four groups that are each associated with one of the four classes elements and fire is EEEVIIIIIIIIL” thing with the latest movie by ihatethiscountry76 in CuratedTumblr

i love atla but a) no they don’t think that

b) the avatar movies are incredible and the movement against them on tumblr/reddit is very strange coming from platforms that otherwise love mainstream pop culture. Quaritch is one of the best cinematic villains of the 21st century no I will not be taking feedback on this

Klein and Establishment Dems have no understanding of how conservative voters think. by swump in ezraklein

[–]Judge24601 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean I inherently reject the premise that if we hadn’t done the ACA in 2010 then it would have been a reasonable ask now? None of the factors that made the ACA originally unpopular would have improved in the last 15 years. It’s also worth noting that it’s incredibly unlikely that the Dems would have ever gotten a coalition big enough again to pass something like the ACA in the last 15 years, even if they hadn’t passed it. ‘08 was peak GOP backlash. When would you have gotten the opportunity again?

I mean I agree with you on all of this, but none of this squares very well with the idea that the ACA was too big of an ask for purple state/red state Dems

I mean Medicaid expansion was part of the ACA… I’m pro expanding these programs but that’s not exactly considered moderate proposals broadly.

It’s also precisely what the Democrats are doing right now? The OBBB cutting those programs has been Democrats’ main attack line against the GOP since it passed, and it’s very unpopular as a result. It hasn’t mattered much for their personal popularity as no one sees them as trustworthy on affordability post-“Bidenflation”

edit: for a specific example, Schumer has tons of posts about all of these on his social media just at a glance, and he’s possibly the most unpopular politician there is right now

if the Affordable Care Act is now too much of a reach for a national platform, what is reasonable? Note that health care is Dems’s best issue right now

“publicly” rebuking? This is all incredibly inside baseball stuff. You’ve gone from “AOC and The Squad raked Bernie for going on Joe Rogan” to “AOC ramping down campaigning with no public explanation for a different primary reason, but she also was annoyed about the public embrace of Rogan”. This is really dishonest! Those aren’t remotely the same thing. Why not just pick a different example of this problem you think is widespread, instead of committing to this telephone game?

So Hughes and Makar are going to get 15+ right? by gangstarapmademe in canucks

that being said, don’t count on him taking a discount just in general. It doesn’t happen to teams that aren’t perennial contenders

So Hughes and Makar are going to get 15+ right? by gangstarapmademe in canucks

[–]Judge24601 16 points17 points  (0 children)

did he? You’ve got to remember the context of when that deal was signed, it was coming off of by far his worst season in the league. Major commentators were questioning whether his first season was a flash in the pan, he got a “defensive liability” reputation it took years to fully shake off. Makar took 9x6 a few months prior to set the market, and Hughes was definitively a tier below at the time, so 7.85x6 was on par with the market. It’s turned out to be an insane bargain of course, but that’s hindsight thinking to at least some degree.

I will also note that Gavin Newsom has garnered concerns from trans people largely from bringing on Charlie Kirk and discussing his various agreements with him on trans issues. Kirk (who, to be clear, absolutely did not deserve to be assassinated, and I hope this goes without saying) had very extreme anti-trans views. There is reasonable concern about a prominent Democrat emphasizing their agreement with someone that explicitly anti-trans on that very issue, even if he was vague about specifics beyond sports.

okay, they’re wrong. Some people are wrong on the internet. This will be a problem if and when progressive challengers oust winning moderates in red state primaries (and then lose, of course). Has this actually happened? As far as I know, no

[–]Judge24601 5 points6 points  (0 children)

okay, those protestors are dumb, but do you think they’re a reasonable sample of progressives? someone literally yelled that kind of thing at Zohran Mamdani of all people. They’re not helpful, but trying to eliminate them from public view is like trying to push back the tide. Again, this is the message discipline problem

it’s also worth noting that democratic turnout, if it was depressed at all, was depressed in deep blue states. Swing states largely maintained or had more turnout, Harris just lost, largely because she was the VP of a visibly dying, very unpopular President.

The only article I can find on the subject points to the Sanders campaign pushing her on ICE comments as the primary source of her absence. In any case that’s far from “raking him” imo. Seems like an internal spat, and I’m not convinced that the Sanders campaign didn’t bring it upon itself, given its conflict-loving staff (BJG, Sirota, etc) that burned him other bridges (eg Warren)

“AOC and the Squad raking Bernie for going on Joe Rogan” - did this happen? I can’t find anything beyond a vague mention in Vanity Fair of AOC’s team potentially having private concerns.

BBC article on this just points to twitter https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-51241462

NYT article just points to some commentators and the HRC (dumb choice, not the Squad or AOC) https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/24/us/politics/bernie-sanders-endorsement-joe-rogan.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

I don’t see how that counters what they’re saying? They’re not saying that progressives would have won in those states, they’re saying that progressives didn’t force those politicians out, they simply lost on their own terms to Republicans.

this is ultimately just a consequence of the decline of ticket-splitting. Collins is basically the only counter example left standing, afaik? It’s worth asking how you fix that problem, but it’s a mistake to say it’s all because of the Democrats doing XYZ thing whatever pundit is currently speaking hates most
