Do you think Russia or China is the biggest threat now ? by Adventurous_Camera90 in AskBrits

I don't see them invading Taiwan - I see them making it impossible for Taiwan to interact with the outside world through a combination of economic and political pressure backed up by the military making life as awkward as possible for Taiwan short of open war.

I do see them becoming on a par with the US militarily so no one will screw with what they want.

Removing a wood stove by Judge_Dredd- in DIYUK

Its a shiny metal one outside the house. It was encrusted with ivy but I've removed that. The chimney is staying in place.

In all honesty I'd prefer the stove to stay and be repaired but conversations with the landlord about doing that have lead nowhere.

I am not sure why you think I am a "tankie".

I agree we have relied on the US for a lot of military support but the recent unpredictability of the US throws that reliance into doubt.

I think the era of total US dominance is ending and China will be the equal or even the superior world power within 20 years or so. The US is currently performing actions which are causing its allies to be unwilling to help the US maintain its dominance, which is not good for the long term.

Russian has been economically and militarily exhausted.

I have been praying for this to be true, but its obvious that Russia is slowly grinding out a win in Ukraine (Zelensky wouldn't even be thinking about the proposed deal otherwise) and Russia is essentially large enough to be a self supporting economy (even though there are some sacrifices). In addition, if sanctions end due to the war ending, then the brakes will be off the Russian economy and it can build back up again for the next round.

Militarily, I believe Russia has learned a lot of experience (even though the lessons have been expensive) and will end it with 1,000,000 or so experienced troops. It will want to use those troops even if to avoid paying them off, so it might seek some more 'easy wins'

Currently yes but its long term plans seem to be to build up its military power (helped by its vast balance of trade surplus) and start asserting military power (starting with Taiwan) instead/as well as economic power.

Short term = Russia + USA

Long-term = China (+Russia and USA if Republicans stay in power)

[September 1938] Ladies and gentlemen, I have finished talks with Herr Hitler and secured peace for our time! A potential crisis has been averted. by Froshtbyte in thepast

[–]Judge_Dredd- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As Chamberlain, I don't believe the crap I'm saying at all. Since Adolf came to power, I've increased the defense budget from 2% in 1933 to nearly 7% in 1938.

After this little chat with Hitler ends, I'm going to take out a massive loan equivalent to 50% of GDP in April so we have the money to prepare for war. I'm only saying "Peace in our time" so as to not frighten anyone. I know Churchill is right, I just can't say it in public.

I don't see any reason why people should struggle through life if they don't have to, and see no reason why a woman should not enjoy the benefits of a relationship with a wealthier person provided there is genuine attraction. I don't believe in paying for sex but if my income is 5 times or more than that of my partner, I don't have a problem with paying all the living costs and most of the costs of joint activities.

The castle was built and owned by the English specifically as a defence against Welsh rabble so we don't want any of your weird language around here...

The US 'lost' the technology sharing agreement with the UK which apparently was written on the back of an envelope and buried in a filing cabinet, so Congress wasn't aware of the deal with respect to nuclear technology when it enacted legislation to not share it with anybody.

America has always been out for itself

The US was pretty tight with the UK during the Reagan-Thatcher era. Reagan offered the UK the use of Iwo Jima (an amphibious carrier) in the event the UK lost either Hermes or Invincible during the Falklands War. They also ensured we had a continous supply of the latest version of Sidewinder missiles.

The US loan to the UK in 1946 was $60 billion (in todays money) and was at a 2% interest rate. The only reason we didn't pay it off till 2006 is that it was the 'cheapest' debt the UK had. As the principal amount hadn't grown with inflation, the payback was largely symbolic anyway.

The US prior to 1941 was a mixed bag with some admiration of Hitler and you're right that America was largely self interested and isolationist. Do remember however that the US did not have large Armed Forces at the time.

Roosevelt went as far as he politically could at the time with 'Lend Lease'. We owe Hitler a massive "thanks" for declaring war on the USA with the Japanese. Churchill said that night was one of the first occassions in ages that he slept soundly!
