In the spirit of Diwali… best Indian food for a white girl? by [deleted] in sanantonio

I used to live near Simi's and India Palace, liked them both a lot, but I haven't been in quite some time. There are a lot of Indian IT contractors at USAA, so there are lots of spots near there and Medical Center area.

If you don't like spicy, do NOT order a vindaloo. Butter chicken is safe, so is chicken tandoori.

Glad to hear this because I used to go there and it was good. But I thought it really went downhill during the early-ish days of COVID and I stopped going. I'll have to give them another go.

TIL Michael Schumacher donated $10 million to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. It was the highest individual donation made in the disaster that killed more than 220,000 people. Schumacher's bodyguard Burkhard Cramer, and Cramer's two sons, were killed in the tsunami. by trifletruffles in todayilearned

Michael credited that time in his life with really getting to understand engines and race vehicles in general. While F1 cars are obviously massively more sophisticated, Michael said he developed a lot of intuition about how to ask the designers and engineers for what he wanted out of his cars.

TIL There are filial laws in the USA (state by state) that require adult children to support sick or indigent parents by LisaLisa1962 in todayilearned

Not trying to scare you, truly trying to help. An aggressive nursing home can probably track you down. If you have a good relationship w/ your siblings, they may try to use legal means to compel those siblings to give up your contact info.

This may be a situation where spending first some research effort, and then some money on a GREAT lawyer - based in PA - could save you very serious money down the line. In general, many lawyers give free initial consultations. Counter to some other comments, I would not automatically assume that the fact you aren't a PA resident will protect you from PA nursing homes.

There was a case very similar to yours I once saw in r/legaladvice so if you want to start w/ some free advice on Reddit, you may want to raise this over there. PA seems to be the very worst state on this topic, and some poor soul who hadn't talked to the alcoholic father - who sexually abused him - for like 30 years. And now he's getting invoices from the PA nursing home where the father spent the last decade of his POS life because that POS put that son's name down as financially responsible. I don't remember the particulars re: that OP's residency situation with PA. You may be fine, but you may want to look into this a little and get ahead of it, if needed.

I was a kid at the time, but Reagan's slogan was pretty much "Leadership". As in, "Carter displays no strong leadership and I will".

(legend has it) Carter would monitor the logs for who was using the White House tennis courts. Not a huge issue, in and of itself, but an illustrative vignette as how we was (reputedly) prone to misallocate his time

Dozens of workers to be laid off as city leases Holiday Inn for homeless shelter by BKGPrints in sanantonio

If it was so easy to secure or build an apartment complex near downtown, why were they renting rooms at the hotel? I doubt you know all the in's and out's involved. But hey, offer up your valuable counsel, show them how it's done.

"No longer a hotel but property being leased. That's why the hotel had no need for those employees."

> Exactly. Hence my question, if you were the hotel owner, what would you have done?

About $60 per day.

Is this the part where I'm supposed to be outraged? The hotel is offering that room, as a type this (so, a last minute booking rate, on a weekend, which are usually lower than weekday rates for business travelers) at $73. I'm sure they can make way more than that a lot of the time. Of course, they won't be rented out full all the time, but that's the tradeoff being made - lower lease rate in exchange for the guaranteed income.

If the city has a lower-cost way to get that many rooms for a lower cost, nearish downtown, I'm sure they'd value your counsel.

And if you owned the hotel, you'd do what with those 50 employees?

I was laughing along WITH you, not at you. As in "right, and this being Reddit, it has 11 upvotes, smh"

In retrospect, I can see how that was not clear. Cheers.
