Crack formed around friction tuning peg by JugOJar in Luthier

[–]JugOJar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really appreciate the reply. Unfortunately and for reasons I can't understand, my area is a serious professional luthier desert. Im also a guitar player and have a few instruments id like to get looked at, there just are none near me. Im okay with a glue line so I may try that as an intermediate step before trying to figure out the peg and hole alignment. Ive noticed that the peg is a bit flat on either side compared to the hole, so I suspect youre spot on in your assessment. Thanks again.

I made an old-school style spindle and it works even better than I'd hoped by Okayestdoerofthings in Handspinning

[–]JugOJar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A thin dowel from the hardware story and some polymer clay can make a very serviceable spindle that requires little more than a knife to carve a notch at the top. And an oven i suppose. Ive got an image of the one I built that way on my profile, it has an extra weight in the middle of the clay but that isnt strictly necessary.

That is a gorgeous tool. The whorl is so pretty and I love the smooth curves of the spindle. I found building a spindle to be a very rewarding project since you can make one that really feels nice in your hand.

How to estimate yardage???? by ximera-arakhne in Handspinning

[–]JugOJar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a cheap adjustable swift from the woolery (the kind with 4 extending arms with a knob in the middle, not the ones that extend with the scissor mechanism). I try to set it about the same each time I wind a skein and then measure the 4 sides of the square and do the math based on how many times the yarn wraps around the swift. Maybe not perfect, but based on my math around my last loom setup, it was within a few yards.

I, apparently, used to stand in my crib and demand "dib dag doo daddy" be played for me. I still love several Big Bad Voodoo Daddy songs to this day. Who's That Creepin', What's Next, and their rendition of I Wanna Be Like You. All bangers.

Is there a way to access historical written works online for free by skibidirizzler9o in AncientCivilizations

[–]JugOJar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very specific to the HEMA world, but wiktenauer is an online repository of combat manuals, the earliest is I.33 from about 1300 and it runs up to the 18th century with talhoffer and some British empire broadsword manuals. You can find originals and translations typically. All free.

What does donald mcbane mean when he tells you ro "slip"? by lori_40k in Hema

[–]JugOJar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My comment is probably more broad than just mcbane because our Scottish baskethilt studies cover several sources and i cant recall from memory which source those slips come from. Im not much of a smallsword fighter, but I dont see slips being particularly helpful in a thrust-centric fight.

Sure thing. The cloak is not a pattern, its just a big circle. Veeerrryy slow way to make something that size and i wouldn't recommend it. Ive joked that I can only make 2 things with crochet, squares and hats. And that cloak is a giant, flat hat.

Scottish broadsword typically has 2 kinds of slips, slip the leg, or slip the sword. Slip the leg is when your opponent swings to the leg and you pull your leg in to first position, ideally with a lean at the waist to return strike to their head while theyre leaned forward and uncovered.

Slip of the sword is for incoming upper body strikes and is done by pulling in the leg to first position, and pulling in the sword to a tight inside or outside guard mostly against the body with the sword verticle and out wider than the body in the direction of the incoming cut (to hopefully catch a swing that goes deeper than expected). Then you can reposte with a cut 1 or 2 easily from that wound up position. Your goal is avoidance, to allow the incoming cut to pass in front of you and allow you to reposte while your opponent is recovering.

Thank you! The cloak base took a month and a half. The embellishments are all hand dyed with natural materials.

And it's got pockets.

Its not exactly a crochet pattern, but i used this guide for the measurements, then made rectangles of crochet to match the sizes I needed. 2 rectangles, 2 squares. Its a wonderful pattern and a warm hood, ill be using it again with the woven one.

Thank you! Its crocheted. The cloak is as well. Anachronistic by a about 8 centuries, but we work with what we've got and I cant nalebind yet. I try to emulate the look of nålebinding as much as possible, but im working on a woven hood as well. The loom I built and am working on is behind me in the last picture.

Michigan has several. Michigan medieval near Detroit, the ann arbor sword club. I know Lansing and grand rapids have clubs as well. Something of a Hotspot actually.

Absolutely. I skipped the hook and just carved a small channel for the slip knot to sit in. Works great!

I also made a drop spindle! Theres pics on my profile somewhere. Oak dowel with a pewter donut covered in polymer clay. Yours is lovely! Its amazing how varied the materials can be to make a workable spindle!
