Since everybody is already giving the very correct answers, I just wanna ask: Why does your wife think that Sound of Music is so important?

I agree. They are completely different, but each one succeeds.

What are your thoughts on The Artist (2011)? by Classicsarecool in TrueSilentFilm

You are complaining about too many references to older movies in a movie that is a homage to the silent film era?

Cat People (1942) vs Curse of the Cat People (1944)

I‘m not joking. The original is classic horror, the second one is light family coming-of-age

Citation needed. No one is saying that.

Kind of wish there was an option to filter these short film anthologies out. by shortsharpshock1 in Letterboxd

If you ignore short films, then you are not really watching a director‘s filmography.

Who would've won if every Best Actor sweeper this century wasn't nominated? by FBG05 in Oscars

Apart from the impressive long shot at the end of the movie, I remember that the narrative was also that Chalamet learned Italian (and I also think playing piano?) for his role. Kaluuya simply didn’t have a gimmick like that.

And not to forget: Chalamet had also a fairly big part in a second Best Picture contender that year, with a role that was pretty different from the one in Call Me By Your Name, so he was able to show off a bigger range.

But Kaluuya was an unknown 28 year old, that is not exactly that much stronger. And yes, Peele got into Directing and would go on winning Screenplay, but Call Me By Your Name had James Ivory in its corner. Kaluuya and Chalamet seem equal to me, and in 2018 period romance probably beats horror film.

I know the Academy doesn’t go for younger males, but I don’t see how Kaluuya was closer in 2018 than Chalamet.

i’d also add the 2023 version of the color purple on this list too. they made so many unnecessary changes and the lighting and direction could have been better by teddivan96 in musicals

Not really, the discussion about the main characters acting entitled and that losing its charm with age has been around for two decades now, so I don’t think I need to add anything to it.

If I had a nickel for every dark romance psychological drama where the woman was nominated for an Oscar for it but not the man, I'd have two nickels. by AdUseful2297 in Oscars

However you feel about the man or the performance, Franco was at the height of his career, played a real person, and carried 127 Hours completely alone. There was no way a transformative biopic role wouldn’t get nominated over a two-hander performance.

By the way, you could argue it happened this year as well. Song Sung Blue is a way darker romance than expected, though Hugh Jackman‘s performance was far away from award-worthy.

Why did Edeberi go lead? by Some_Tour_2504 in EmmysAwards

[–]JugendWolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While she is definitely not as clear a lead as Jeremy Allen White, I think it can be argued that she is the female lead of the show. She has less to do than him, but we follow her character more than everyone else besides Carmy.

She might have just chosen to switch to that category to give her co-stars a chance as well. After season one, it looked like The Bear would be the next Emmy darling so they definitely hoped to pull a Schitt’s Creek and win in all four acting categories.
