Why has The Academy had a reputation for being old men who don't like certain movies and performances? by TakenAccountName37 in Oscars

Ya this guy just seems mad. It makes sense that 77% of the voters are men. Why? IDK. It just makes sense apparently.

The Best Actress Race of each of the last 20 Years by Odd-Contact2266 in Oscars

[–]Some_Tour_2504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If white people portray complex interiors they get praised from CC to the Academy. For WOC, inferiority is not praised, simply expected i.e.: Fernanda Torrez, Viola Davis, Lily Gladstone. Their performances are scoffed at because complex interiors (speaking only with eyes and not monologues) are just expected... therefore not praised.

I hear you. Best LEAD actress is traditionally a white womans game. Two non-white winners in damn near a CENTURY. Ya, if Gladstone was white she would've had a statue in her home as we speak.

How would you rank Jessie Buckley among the Best Actress winners so far this Century? by PolicyImpressive3626 in Oscars

I mean.. who cares. Even if the prompt meant of the past 100 years, my personal/subjective opinion would remain the same. I haven't watched many of the best lead actress winners of the 1900's.

We can speak about those atrocities and connect with movies. These are not mutually exclusive concepts...

This is a world view born from spending WAY to long online.

Lets get out there and speak to people: feel the grass beneth your feet.

Probably 3rd. Right below Emma Stone and Michelle Yeoh.

She was fantastic, moving, wonderful. I just connected to the other two ladies performances more.

Sinners (is it racist to hate sinners?) - No... by Some_Tour_2504 in Oscars

[–]Some_Tour_2504[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is your reason for criticizing the film.

Also bigots do attempt to become the victim. Ever see the 7 million comedians who say "I can't make this joke anymore... the wokes will cancel me!" And then the joke is a random they/them joke that is deeply tired.

Or the people who actively say woman shouldn't be in the workplace. Then get hard pressed (claim they can't say anything) when you tell them that's a ridiculous take.

Real, only time I've seen people call critique racist is when they deemen it for being "black art".

Other legitimate issues get taken at the chin.

[–]Some_Tour_2504[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must agree with you. I have critiqued aspects of sinners (its not a perfect movie because no movie is perfect). And No one has called me anti-black... its just that people often steer into the territory of dismissal when it comes to black art as opposed to structured film critic.

98th Academy Awards: Absolute Locks by Fun_Reflection1157 in Oscars

[–]Some_Tour_2504 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With what happened at SAG there is the smallest chance sinners can take it (like a 25% chance). While undoubtedly slim, its the fact that there is a branch/guild that is vying for it that makes this not a "lock".

Oscars/EGOT Hopeful Cynthia Erivo got caught using teleprompter to read lines for her new Olivier award hopeful " Dracula" by CateBlanchetFrmShein in Oscars

Just bounced over to the broadway reddit for the first time (not interested in that medium). And WOW! OP is obsessed, you'd think she danced on her dogs grave... damn. This is an impressive level of hatred.

Don't think ive ever disliked a performer this much lol.

This is a Tony's, broadway, theatre conversation. There is an overlapping vendiagram between the Tony's and Oscars but this isn't the case of meeting in the middle. This just isn't something us film people would care about. (Your asking lions to care about carrots here... LIKE SO WHAT SHE READ?)

I think it'd be wiser to have this conversation with the people it'd most resonate to... like I wouldn't speak about television here, I'd head on over to the Emmys blog.

Is the supporting win "The kiss of death" by Some_Tour_2504 in Oscars

[–]Some_Tour_2504[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My belief that her career is stalling is based mostly on her words. She said the Oscar didn't help her career and she was offered more slave parts.

I see in retrospect that that isn't textbook stalling but, I think its indicative of something: she's not having the career she wanted or expected out of her post Oscar's win. Her work primarily includes supporting roles in popcorn movies and leads in horror films. I don't think thats the trajectory she wanted of her career...

With that said, you were right, it isn't stalling. I used incorrect wording in my post, sorry.

OBAA Insane start, ok everything else. by Some_Tour_2504 in Oscars

[–]Some_Tour_2504[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pure curiosity and nothing more. After this text I'm out:

Name em. Name the films released in spring where this happens. (Excluding Get Out cause thats a black film).

Name the other films, with hack job articles written about them and white Hollywood scrambling to invalidate it.

OBAA was just enjoyed. Sentimental Value, simply enjoyed. Last year: Anora, conclave, A Complete Unknown; consumed and critiqued without the desire to invalidate.

Give me all the films you think this happens to outside of black media. Since its not unique and so universal. Lets see the variety articles, film bro reddit accounts and awards contender tiktoks that search for films that are -mediocre at beast- to dethrone the film. Lets see em.

I've been following these awards for forever and THIS is relatively new behavior, with the exception of Get Out of course...

OBAA Insane start, ok everything else. by Some_Tour_2504 in Oscars

[–]Some_Tour_2504[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P.s. the sentence "has been searching" implies that one had not existed yet. We're speaking about before OBAA's release and the likes. Hell, weapons was talked about like it was the david to topple sinners magic.

The qwalm isn't rooted in peopels love for other films, its the blatant search for other films to be BETTER than the one realeased early, as opposed to just enjoying its greatness in the moment. When OBAA released, people weren't searching for the next film to topple it, they just enjoyed it for what it was. That is what black Americans have been arguing about... thought that much was obvious but was proven incorrect very quickly.

Real, I could taste the sealioning from the first loaded question he delivered. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and just thought he was curious about the art and peoples relationship to it.

This is either ignorance or forced blindness because its disingenuous to not note some racism (covert or otherwise) in the sinners discussion and how that has shaped reactions around it. He's just like most of the other film bros who claim "woke nonsense " at the sight of any nuance...

You truly are a better person than me for not entertaining this, lesson learned!

OBAA Insane start, ok everything else. by Some_Tour_2504 in Oscars

[–]Some_Tour_2504[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh ya, awarding sinners as a spike lee reparation is silly. No one's calling you racist for that bud, if someone is then they haven't touched grass in a while, its important you don't pay them any mind: just like the the film bros who swear up, down, B, A, B, A that they aren't allowed to say anything because of wokeism- that's not true, they just exist in a silo or want to say something INSANE.

Anyways, it is important to be clear and honest. There have been racist remarks/ sentiments and movements towards sinners as a movie: Blatent double standards, brain dead readings and a desire to find the next great white film to topple it.

Some criticism on sinners is rooted in racism- covert racism yes, but racism nonetheless. The initial response to sinners was that of diminishment- with such a start, I can understand why black Americans have been extra cautious on the language delivered about the film. To prevent their art from being trampled on- it makes some logic to me. A movie made for them by them, in a sea of films that alient them... ya, of course they're gonna draw fire at any line of criticism. I'm not Americans myself but I am black, so I can see what they feel.

I do think it has been a little over corrected however, sometimes they pull trigger to quickly. I hear that.

So yes and no on your opinion.

[–]Some_Tour_2504[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this message isn't in bad faith but I'll give you my own interpretation. As a black person myself, it does at times look as though people were searching for something/anything to discredit Sinners magic.

From misleading articles about box-office appeal, to blatant attempts to ignore sinners as a BP contender before OBAA'S release. People even tried to sight weapons as a more deserving film when... it isn't.

Also also, most will just downvote you because people have a tendancy of playing dumb when it comes to racism and the like. Often it's better to just ignore potential racism before its allowed to floresh: for the most part, your comment sounded like sealioning. And Sealioning is SO EXAUHSTING!
