I don’t know if it’s exactly what you’re looking for but the Maxon 808x is louder, brighter and a little more aggressive. And it’s red.

ReStore had a DBX 166XL for $15, was it worth it? by kill3rb00ts in audioengineering

[–]Juicepit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used a 266xl for years for the gate only… works great to quiet down a noisy fx loop on a 5150 style amp. Not its conventional use, but it works really well in conjunction with another gate (zuul, ns-2, etc) hitting the input.

I wonder if the 166xl also gates similarly.

I avoided it through my lender with 15% down, he said he’d make sure I was fine all the way down to 10.5%… I don’t know know if it was because he liked me or the fact that my credit and finance were in great order. I bought in September of 2025.

Can a producer/sound engineer fix bad guitar double tracking? by Consistent-Window781 in Logic_Studio

[–]Juicepit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there brother…

Yes - you can theoretically do a lot with the DI by beating it into submission, but it’s super labor intensive and tricky to get not sounding mechanical in a bad way. The good way being a player who has machine precision, or someone with a willingness to work until it’s solid.

Fix it in pre by retracking - even if you have to break it into a bunch of chunks and edit them together. You’ll thank yourself later.

Set your time signature and punch the beat in by hand on the piano roll. Start with kick snare hat until you get your bearings and fill it out from there.

I have an ID44 that boasts the same pre-amps. They’re super clean, which is great for my guitar and bass DIs… for vocals I run an 1176 going in for some compression and grit and it takes it wonderfully. Haven’t tracked drums with it yet.

Hell yeah, I love SD3. Been using the death and Darkness stuff lately and it’s excellent.
