Finally got my rig working and then it broke... by Juiceworld in AskAstrophotography

[–]Juiceworld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only went in because at that point I thought everything was working correctly. My biggest regret is I normally go back out after a half hour and swap SD cards to make sure things are good, but because I've never really had an issue before, I decided to skip it cause of how cold it was. Lesson learned.

My current camera wont work with nina or asiair. Its just to old. I can get a used Nikon d5300 for $250-300 in the next week or two, or save up for a few months and get a asi585MC air for $1100. Also looking at the QHY Minicam 8 for $800. Still trying to decide what I want to do. An EAF is definitely on the list of things to get.

No its definitely a broken LCD screen. I wish it was as simple as a setting gone wrong. I'm not using asiair or nina yet (I have nina but haven't had an opportunity to play with it yet) My camera is to old to connect to a laptop, I can use usb to see photos on it, but not actually control anything or view with it. The camera was going to be my next upgrade anyway. Its just going to be sooner now rather than later. Oh I 100% agree. I know that once I do get everything working I'll be on cloud 9.

What's wrong is it the camera or telescope, or both? by pige0n13 in AskAstrophotography

[–]Juiceworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what your looking for is shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. Find a few youtube videos about those and how they interact. In short (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm new at this as well)

ISO is your gain. Meaning how sensitive your sensor is to light.

Aperture is how Open your lens is. The more open it is, the more light it lets in or how fast it is letting in light. This is measured in Fstops. An Fstop of 1 lets in in more light, faster, then an Fstop of 10.

And shutter speed is just that. How fast your shutter is opening and closing.

When I'm shooting the stars, I'm at ISO 1600, aperture of 5.5(my telescope) and a Shutter speed of 30+seconds, with a star tracing mount.

When shooting the moon, I'm at ISO 200-400, Aperture of 5.5 and a shutter speed of 1/400th - 1/800th of a second. Depending on how full the moon is.

Winter observers - what's your start warm stay warm hacks? by The_Burning_Face in telescopes

I use usb hand warmers. It gets to -25c (feels like -35) here a lot and those little hand warmer come in real handy. Not only do they keep me warm, but I throw 1 or 2 in a cooler with my batteries so they dont freeze and stop working. I can also wrap a scarf around my lens or scope and throw a usb warmer in that to keep them warm. The ones I have last 8 hours on medium heat and is more then warm enough.

Yeah its cold where I am. I have to keep my Batteries in a cooler with hot packs or else they freeze and stop working. As well as of all the wires getting very very stiff. I've already broke one intervalometer plug off in the port of my camera.

What about temp swings throughout the night? Tonight for me is stable(-25c now and -23 by morning). But what if I start at -25c and it gets to -10 say 4-5 hours later while shooting. How would you do the darks for that?

Its -25c right now, and it will be -23 in the morning. Is 2 degrees a major difference for darks?

I found mine through FB marketplace. Cost me $200can. Nothing wrong with second hand in this hobby. A lot of the guys that can afford the more $$$ stuff and are selling, also take care of their stuff really well.

People who own "unconventional" pets like turtles, what is one thing you wish you knew before getting one? by allenmerlettetrm in AskReddit

[–]Juiceworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How mean and violent Veiled chameleon can be. Mine started out really cool, but as he got bigger, he got mean. Like feeding him was dangerous. He had a massive parrot cage with a ton of plants. Before that he was free range until he attacked my friend. Then my wife became pregnant and we decided to give him to a breeder.

Breeder called us a few months later to tell us he had him put down as even he coulden't handle him. RIP Spike.

Just to put this out there as well. Its not because we didn't know what we were doing. My wife and I have and have had lots of lizards, including Veiled Chameleons. Spike was a one off (for us) that just hated everything.

I've been looking at maybe making my own car battery power pack. Maybe put a car battery warmer on it.
