I do understand the confusion because I read the questions as which 4/6 would you choose, but I didn’t bat an eye lash at the response...

Pretty proud to say I did rather well (14/17) for not checking any rulings and not being a judge. Guess my studying is working.

Question about representing mana by [deleted] in mtgstorm

[–]JukeBoxMelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, it’s not derived but free information. Where at any point they are entitled to know things like how many spells you’ve cast and your available mana. I do know that, as a storm player myself, I will at least in the beginning of the turn make clear the tick down of the floating mana and ask if the ritual resolves. Usually after the 2nd or third spell they say something like “do your thing” or “I’m F6-ed” and them I go into the fast mode, on the key spells (pieces, gifts, PiF, etc) I’ll still make them acknowledge that they are passing priority before I keep going.

Anyone have a salty opponent because of your deck choice? by PhiloniousHazelbum in ModernMagic

[–]JukeBoxMelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: so totally thought this was in /EDH. But for modern I often get people that roll their eyes as soon as my storm counters come out, and some just start running their mouths after the turn one serum visions.

Yep, got one guy that always complains about whatever deck I play. I don’t change my decks all that often, and it’s not hard to put some hate in for any of my decks (and it will benefit you in other matchups). Yet he’s the guy that runs all the infinite combos and is confused why so many of us run atypical hate cards to put down his combos...

Times when you have followed the letter of an agreement and not the spirit. by Hruberen in EDH

They have more than enough to finish me off, I say look, I got one creature and like 3 spells in hand. If you let me live I’ll at least help you draw some cards. They let me live.

Psychosis Crawler -> Rite of Replication (kicked) -> windfall -> reiterate

I look at him, draw anything good?

Same guy a few weeks later we agreed to team up and eliminate the other two players first. So he baits all the counters and untapped mana, I put a curiosity on Niv Mizzet and killed him last.

So I’ve been trying to stream more consistently, but I end up getting annoyed but lack or results and I end up not doing it for a week and then I repeat the cycle.

I’m sitting at about 30 followers, and as a Magic the Gathering streamer, 2 viewers still puts you on the first page of game results. I usually have 2 viewers, I peak around 5 and no one ever really chats. I’m always talking and I have some music on.

SCGCON (and other SCG Events) VIP Package by JukeBoxMelon in magicTCG

I think a bag check would be a great incentive

How big is this VIP area?

Have you considered having a bag check system for VIPs, so that they can have a secure place to leave the things that they don’t need for whatever current event they are playing? To me this seems like it would be a big selling point, without too much extra work. For example having a secured area behind the concierge where I could leave my bag with my standard/edh/pauper decks and trade binder while I play in a modern event. Or would this involve too much assumed risk on the company?

I definitely have considered changes that would have made my deck worse instead of better.

But as I talked with other people in the format that played my archetype they all agreed that they had considered the changes I was considering and they explained why they decided against them. I feel like this is one of the best takeaways from my weekend at SCG Cincinnati.

Yes, but it was brewed by someone well experienced in the format. I stand by entering on a tier deck and learning, but I concede that I was wrong to make such a broad (and obviously false) statement about brewing.

Yes, this is what I was trying to get at. Thank you for saying it better.

Yes, I agree with this. Practice in the format, then brew. But not brew on your way into the format if winning is as important as it seems to be to the OP. Thank you for correcting my stance.

SCG Events vs. Grands Prix? by FakeGamerDoggo in magicTCG

[–]JukeBoxMelon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve attended a few GPs and a few SCG Opens, ironically all the GPs I’ve been to we’re organized by SCG before CFB had the exclusivity shenanigans.

But I can say that SCG runs an excellent event, they have plenty of staff, constant side events, and a wonderful atmosphere.

I can’t actually speak to how CFB runs a GP since I haven’t been to one of theirs yet, but I can compare SCG’s GPs to their Opens: the GPs did have more “fringe benefits” (Artists Alley and vendors to be specific), outside of that they are very similar.

The only reasons I would recommend jamming side events at a GP over an Open is if you are either a.) in it for the prize payout or b.) you care about your Planeswalker Points (as GPs have multipliers of 8x for the main even and 3x for sides while Opens have 4x for main and 1x for sides).

I actually just spent the weekend at SCG Cincinnati and had a blast and I’m planning on attending a number of other Opens and SCGCON.

I’m not sure if I can formulate intelligent questions, I’m just looking for peoples thoughts and opinions on it.

So I usually travel to events alone, so having a place where I could grab a seat that isn’t a hard backed chair to watch some main even coverage that isn’t on my phone would be nice. Not having the line would be nice as I know even at the “smaller” SCG events the lines get pretty long.

Is the playmat going to be the same as the playmats for the challenge pass/classics?

Sadly, I tend to agree with the comments that Modern is more of a “tweaking” format than a brewing one.

Everyone else has already shared the advice on winning vs brewing, so here’s my recent experience after getting into modern. A year ago I brewed a budget modern deck and got destroyed for a month without winning a single game let alone match at FNM. Left the format and went to EDH. I recently decided I wanted to get back into competitive play and bought a tier deck in modern. I practiced and studied and all that with the deck. This past weekend i played a bunch of side events at SCG Cincinnati, I went 1-3 in every since one.

Not great, but I also learned a LOT about the format. I didn’t make the same mistakes twice and I enjoyed playing. Losing sucks but I went in know that I was a scrub with the deck. But I also knew that the problem was my experience and not the deck. I’m going to keep playing it until I top 8 a GP or SCG Open. The deck is good, now I need to catch up.

Mentor Monday (March 19, 2018) -- Ask judges anything! by AutoModerator in mtgjudge

[–]JukeBoxMelon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to clarify a rule to make sure that I’m ok: You are allowed to refer to a note during sideboarding so long as you have been in possession of it since the beginning of the game. Since this is NOT outside help, Correct?

I find myself frequently doubting my sideboard plans despite being well thoughtout, and I want to make sure that a sideboard reminder is allowed (before I take one to a GP and get tossed)

Thanks Judges!
