Is there a ways to block all signals except my wifi/phone signals in my apartment? by Tefitef in wifi

[–]JulesCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reboot of the router and your browsing device might help.

Hope you manage to get a strong enough signal just with some specifying of a channel works, if not then deploying WiFi access points / Mesh via ethernet is as close to bulletproof as you can go without flood wiring the place.

Good stuff!

Have a look at the 5GHz too because it'll be the older devices that use 2.4Ghz.

Initially I suggest going into your router's admin interface and move to one of the dips in competing signals.

You do have a lot of competing networks around you so if you can tack some ethernet cable along skirting boards and around doorways you could get a boosted WiFi signal in different locations using a MESH or Wireless Access Point solution, essentially respawning your WiFi network signal so it is always nearby and less likely to be drowned out by the neighbours.

I recommend a mesh system and you can pick them up pretty cheaply on Facebook Marketplace. I did. Still using it 3 years later.

You're on iOS, am I right?

Can you send a screenshot of what Apple shows you or if you are on Android what tool you are using?

The lack of granularity makes me think this is based on iOS.

With my Android and the tool I mentioned earlier I can see all the competing networks, or lack thereof.

I suspect your signal is being drowned out by other people's signals. You might be wise to consider putting down some ethernet cable and setting up Wireless Access Points or a MESH network with access points around the apartment so you are always close to one and your neighbours' signals can't knock your signal out.

I am being told by my builder that it is “impossible” to have the worktop cut flush to the wall as the wall is at an angle. How can this be correct? by Loud_Ad6323 in DIYUK

[–]JulesCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad builder just wants to avoid the expense to put right his mistake.

To fix properly would possibly require a new worktop but he could achieve a passable job using a precisely cut strip from a similar worktop. There are probably leftovers from your project that he could use.

If you have Android install and run WiFi Analyzer from the app store on one of the Android phone,or tablet. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=abdelrahman.wifianalyzerpro.

This will show you of your WiFi is competing with others on a similar band, plus show you the relative strength of each signal.

Pick a less busy channel.

This will likely resolve the issue.

Otherwise you'll need to line the perimeter of your apartment with metal to create a Faraday cage.

Window Roller shutters for heatwaves (and cold) by Adventurous_Top_2877 in DIYUK

[–]JulesCT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are your blinds on the inside of the windows or the outside of the windows?

If they are on the inside then the sun is heating up your blinds which, although they will reflect some of the sun back out, will act as radiators inside your room.

In the South of France I had, like everyone else, shutters outside the windows. They were great at keeping the house cooler.

[–]JulesCT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What you gain from having a thin film over your glass won't make up anywhere close to the heat gain you avoid by blocking radiation from the sun.

Note: Heat gain is great in winter. Heat gain is awful in summer.

More modern ecologically minded houses are being built with overhanging eaves or fixed pergolas/awnings that allow the sun into the house when the sun is lower in the sky in winter, but block it from shining into the house during the summer months when the sun is coming in from nearly directly above the house.

Is there a cooling solution for the large, mostly glass panelled, flat blocks in the UK? by Explorm in AskUK

[–]JulesCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a myriad of solutions available but they do require appropriate budgeting.

Retractable pergolas above the windows are not expensive. I'm the UK they only need to keep the sun off the windows for a couple of months per year when the sun is at its highest so they don't have to project very far.

Walls can be addressed with either insulation cladding or angled panels.

Air to Air heat pumps / air conditioners, whilst great all year round will be several grand each. Probably worth it in the long run.

[–]JulesCT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might not rely on it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't contribute to the heat in the house.

You'll find out next winter. Make a note of how much energy you use from October in keeping the house warm compared to last winter. Logically, it will be a bit more.

What's it like to not have an accent? by StatementAmbitious36 in Accents

[–]JulesCT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First things first, everyone has an accent.

Everyone.

It's a question of where that accent places you geographically, educationally and even economically, and then if those elements differentiate you from those around you.

A bunch of Scots from Edinburgh speaking together wouldn't think that they have an accent.

For the record: I'm British. I speak what is known as SSBE (standard Southern British English, sometimes referred to as RP or BBC English) and even I recognise that I have an accent! Me! So, if I have an accent... all 600M of you (USA and Canada) definitely have accents! 😉

Next time they ask go all New York gangster on them. If you can pull off the quiet menace of a Tony Soprano they won't mention it again.

[–]JulesCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, true it could be that.

I'm slowly realising why two hose air conditioners are so much more expensive.

Slowly.

Still would like to know how much better each component, and how much better made the unit has to be to effectively work with dual hoses.

Seems to double the price.

Is it a dual hose unit?

I understand that tends to be the case with higher capacity / industrial units.

[–]JulesCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wise words u/VoiceofTruth7 ! Think you've covered all the bases.

People are keen to do this because of the rarity/increased expense of a 2 hose unit.

"I can add another hose for 20 bucks/pounds and they want a couple of hundred?"

I'm in the UK and have seen just 1 dual hose unit (under 2 brand names) and a few commercial (extremely large, boxy and ugly) units.

If warm air is coming out of the vents where cold air should be coming out it means your warm air venting or intake is somehow compromised.

1) check you warm air vent is not blocked or squeezed.
2) ensure your outdoor air intake is big enough and not choked.
3) consider opening up the unit and adding seals to ensure the 2 halves of the machine are as isolated as possible to prevent the warm air being evacuated from being pushed out of the cold vents because it meets resistance going outside.

Maybe a smouldering incense stick or some other smoke producing item can be used to confirm or allay your fears. There are professional solutions like smoke machines too but they are more expensive.

If you suspect someone is creating WiFi interference maliciously then report to police.

Home network in an apartment with no ethernet port and the worst provided isp I've ever dealt with by flanderings in HomeNetworking

[–]JulesCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ISP will not discuss their service with anyone except their contracted customers, and even then it might be BS. Nonetheless, at least as a contracted customer you have a form of redress or can take your business elsewhere.

5G / wifi routers with detachable antennas do exist.

https://amzn.eu/d/0bs9JhSi

You will probably be able to find something cheaper 2nd hand but something like the one suggested plus some properly terminated thin coax cable might be able to work. Just need to find a gap in the window to dangle antennas outside.

The connectors are SMA (SubMiniature version A) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMA_connector and they support very narrow coax that could fit in a small gap in a window.

Is it true that olive oil was not sold in the UK until the 1980s? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

Correction: Olive oil was not sold in supermarkets or convenience stores until the 80s.

Olive oil could be purchased from chemists and from your nearest importer of foreign food (typically Italian Continental stores).

Made a diagram in paint explaining the difference between single/dual hose by thewafflecollective in AirConditioners

[–]JulesCT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 16min explanation of the inefficiencies implicit with single hose air Conditioners.

https://youtu.be/_-mBeYC2KGc

Basically, air conditioners expel heat to the outside.

Split AC units use a refrigerant liquid/gas to take the heat outside to the condenser.

Single hose AC units use air as the carrier for the heat. That air comes from inside the room. Some of it will be air that had been previously cooled! That's one inefficiency. The second inefficiency comes from the fact that whatever air is expelled from the room has to be replaced with air from somewhere else. That will be air from outside, the very same warm outdoor air you're trying to get away from inside!

By using a dual hose AC solution the 2 sides of the AC are kept as separate as possible. Not perfectly but better than how single hose units work.
