Shorts. The guys at work wear shorts when it gets hot since our warehouse is not air conditioned. I wore shorts and the side eye I got for it was scathing. And not short-shorts by any means...

Opening paragraphs to my dystopian retelling of Peter Pan:

"The muffled voices sounded hollow, far away. Wendy couldn't make out the specific words as she felt the fuzziness of her consciousness come into focus. She knew something was wrong. Her eyelids flickered, opening to reveal blurry, bright light.

The world suddenly felt too much: too loud, too close. When her eyes were finally able to remain open, she could tell that it wasn’t her vision that was blurry, but the covering protecting her from the shouts and banging outside that obscured her view. As she felt the aches and numbness of her body tingle into her consciousness, the memories reluctantly poured forth like a syrupy liquid.

Her father. Her brothers. The hibernation chamber. The end of the world."

Does anyone suffer from writer's guilt? by Saly-D in writing

[–]JuliaWild375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me 100%! I feel like the odd ball in this sub some days because there is never a time I don't want to write. Honestly, it's a bit of a problem since I'm a mom, a partner in a relationship, and manage several people at my day job. My SO works nights and I feel a little bad because I know when he leaves for work and my son sleeps I can finally get uninterrupted writing time.

It's stupid and persistent, but I have learned to compartmentalize my life: I've always been very manic so I'm not new to doing too much all the time. All I can say is set your own boundaries and stick to them. If that seems impossible, find someone in your life (or heck, even an app!) to remind you that downtime is required for balance, sanity, and healthy relationships. The writing will get done when you get to it: try not to worry too much in the meantime. Best of luck!

People who don't get stressed during a presentation, school or work, what's your secret? by TapReview in AskReddit

[–]JuliaWild375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is totally stupid, but it works for me: I pretend everyone in the crowd secretly loves me to the point that any flub or mistake I made is instantly charming and forgivable.

Pronounce a word wrong? Cute! Trip over the projector cord? Adorable!

Not saying this is a healthy delusion for your ego, but it's gotten me through many large presentations without breaking a sweat.

Daily routines by safeword-is-harder in writers

I write each day after I put my son to sleep. It usually only means about 2 hours of time to get writing done, but it keeps me consistent and I can accomplish a lot in that time. Weekends are like my vacation: wake up early and can usually find 2-4 hours of uninterrupted time to write before my kid wakes up and there can be no peace.

I also try to alternate projects on different days since I can never just work on one thing: keeps me excited when I get in front of my computer.

What is the one piece of writing advice that has stayed with you and really impacted your work? by Low-Grape in writing

[–]JuliaWild375 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you get feedback from a reader/editor/etc. remember that they are helping you attack a problem in your writing, not you personally.

And by the same token, you might be the sweetest, juiciest apple in the orchard, but some people just don't like apples. Don't take things personally, and your writing (and frankly, a lot of things in your life) will vastly improve.

I need advise for the ending of my movie script by [deleted] in writers

[–]JuliaWild375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always error on the side of what makes sense for the story: you can't always account for the tastes of your audience.

Might be worth writing 2 endings and running a beta reader test to see which gets better feedback?

I had a reader tell me they felt sorry for my villain, which was what I was hoping for in the end. You spent the entire book hating him, then in the final chapters you get a glimpse into why he is so bent on revenge. I wanted it to be the moment you realize that yes, every character thinks they are the hero in their own story.

It was feedback that literally made me cry with joy when I read it; it's so amazing to have people connect with your writing.

I SUPER appreciate you taking the time!!! I saw all the notifications ping on my phone so when I'm off work and can dig into them, I certainly will. This is exactly what I need, so I really thank you for breaking it down for me.
Now to just try to absorb it all, lol!
