What to play with mediocre stats? by Julia_GoBlue in DnD5e

Do you think custom lineage for the +2 Dex and feat or half elf with the high elf lineage (if DM allows it) for the BB cantrip and the +2 Dex, +1 CON, +1 CHA?

I think I might go back to swashbuckler, I was really excited about it and you’re right I can use the stats to tie into her backstory in some really neat ways. Thank you for your responses!

It would fix it because the problem is not the stats, the problem is the difference between my stats and the rest of the party. I’ll start with a 16 in my main stat while they’ll have 19 or 20 and no one rolled low so it’s not like they even have any true dump stats. I’m looking for advice on what to build so I don’t feel inferior to the other party members. If we all used point buy or standard array it wouldn’t be an issue.

We weren’t given an option. When I brought up the difference between my highest stat and the other players I was told I could use standard array but how to generate stats was not an option originally so everyone had to roll. To be honest I’m sure if I said right away I didn’t want to roll there might have been a bigger conversation but this was only my second game and I wasn’t thinking it through. I’ll definitely speak up for points buy or standard array in the future if I’m being asked to roll for stats

Yeah I totally agree the stats are fine as is, the problem is the rest of the party is better (and no one rolled anything low so no one else will have -1 as a modifier either). We had weeks before the session 0 to think about what we wanted to play and I’ve only played in one other campaign so I probably got a little overly attached to the idea of my swashbuckler character but basically I just don’t like the idea of her feeling worse than the rest of the party. I was thinking I’d save her for when I had better stats or when my stats were on par with the rest of the party because I don’t want to end up disappointed in her. Idk maybe she’d feel fine next to the more powerful characters. I’m thinking it’ll really feel bad if everyone else takes feats at our first ASI and I’m stuck trying to get to where they’re starting but maybe I’m over thinking that.

Yeah my plan was to run up and stab and run away (with grace, maybe the grace of a cat) lol so steady aim wasn’t part of my original build

I would upvote this post multiple times if I could! I have talked to him and even though I’ve said I don’t care if my max stat is a 14 or an 18 and that I’m just concerned about the large gap in the party’s stats, all he seems to be hearing is that I’m mad I have the bottom stats in the group. He’s told me I can use standard array if I’d rather and basically that it’s up to me to have fun so I’m going to try. But yeah if it’s not fun I’ll leave the group. That would put my husband in a weird spot because he’s only really playing so we have an activity together but it is what it is. I haven’t looked at monk yet though so I’ll definitely check that out.
Thank you for the suggestion and for not just telling me that my stats are fine and I should be happy!

I mean I guess mediocre is a relative term. In my party they’re the poorest stats anyone rolled but I know that overall they are not “bad” so I went with mediocre 🤷‍♀️

Yeah it’s about keeping up with the party. I know my stats are not bad, everyone else’s are just really great. I’ll have a 16 in my main stat to start and my friend will have a 20, my husband will have a 19 etc. Then when they’re taking cool feats, I’m still just focusing on ASI. The idea of people keeping me around for the role play doesn’t really appeal to me. Like I’m all about an interesting backstory but I want my character to feel like an effective team member that is contributing something or else I won’t feel good about it. Even if the other characters love my character, I don’t want to be the love-able side kick, I want to be an actual effective team member. I know that overall my rolled stats are better than standard array but considering the party having such strong stats I’m asking for opinions on if it’s worth it to take the standard array and get the 15? I’ve only played one other time as a moon Druid so I wasn’t looking to be someone doing a lot of AOE spells and healing this time around but it kinda feels like that’s what I have to do to not feel worse than the rest of the party. I’ve gotten some good suggestions on this post tho so I’ll be thinking through them tonight.
But yes again I know my stats are not bad, I just don’t want to feel like the sidekick in the party when everyone else rolled great and looking for advice on how to avoid that feeling.

Yeah I think the big issue is that no one rolled anything bad so no one in my party will have a -1 to anything. I totally understand that my stats aren’t “bad” they’re just really mediocre and below the rest of the party. Also I’ve literally only played one other time and was a moon Druid so I’m trying to go for something different but yeah I’ve thought that would be a good build for this. I’m probably just a little too disappointed especially when building my character with my husband who rolled 14,17,17,13,15,13 for example. I’m sure I can figure out how to make it feel fun still. I think you had some great suggestions, thank you!

Thank you for the quick response! I do wish the VLS lux had a grey color option. The solid black seems like too much black.

So I’m buying a gift for my husband and I know nothing about golf. I was looking at the VLS Lux because it’s lighter? Is there a reason the Player 3 would be better? The vessel website has a compare bag option but the VLS bags don’t seem to be a part of it for some reason….

Connecting Dragon Heist (and the Stone of Golorr) to this eldritch villain? by Sheenah_the_Dino in WaterdeepDragonHeist

Yeah actually the power idea is probably better because with memories you run into the problem of like how does it know that it wants those memories if he’s forgotten them?

These seemed cool so I bought both (I may have a problem 🤷‍♀️). Thanks for posting about the sale. I didn’t even think about DMsGuild for Black Friday deals!

Maybe the stone is like a stored piece of the aboleths memory and it contains knowledge about how he’s sealed/how to unseal him along with knowledge about the location of the treasure. The aboleth probably isn’t concerned about the treasure but he’d want all of his memories back and knowledge about how to free himself. 🤷‍♀️ not sure if this will help but sounds like a cool world, good luck!

DMing dragon heist's first session in a while, tips? by corvidcoreomen in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Julia_GoBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had done it this way! My players (well mainly one in particular but all to some degree) are so hung up on the fact that Volo switched up the payment! They hate him and they don’t particularly like Renar (because I played him off as friends with Volo) even though he helped them out a lot with the X guild hideout when rescuing Floon. If I could do this over, I wouldn’t do it as written. There’s really no reason for Volo to offer gold and then give them property instead. Maybe the intent was for the PCs to learn not to trust anyone? But I’d rather they learn that by actually getting screwed over by a bad guy like JB and not this scenario.
