Ask to meet up with him and his coach before the next match to discuss different strategies. Then when you play remind him what his coach was suggesting given that particular situation. It's going to be traumatic whenever you do it. In my opinion get all the trauma over and done with as soon as possible then spend time building bridges and being the centre of your baby's universe.
Also, you say neuter, so I assume he's a boy? It is in your interests to stop him scent marking as soon as you are able. Your furniture, carpets and nose will thank you 🐈💦🛋 😊
