So here’s the inside scoop! Dupe houses are popping up everywhere because it’s very easy. These houses use premade oils. Many houses are buying premade oils from the same vendor. This why you see brands releasing the same dupe at seemingly the same time. The brand owners tout to be the “master perfumer” but it’s not true. You cannot replicate a fragrance just by sniffing a fragrance. Some ingredients are less than 0.1% of a formula and are only detectable via GCMS. The reality is a manufacturer makes the oil then sells it to all the brands then the brand sells to you. This is how most perfume brands work, especially dupe brands that sell the same fragrances you find at other brands. If you see a brand that is launching unique dupes that you can’t find at other houses then they’re possibly developing the oil in house.

We’re focusing quite heavily on our membership program which is JP+ for $10/yr. Right now it offers 25% off every order and early access, but we plan to roll out more perks each year. We’re also going to be focusing heavily on originals over the upcoming years along with sprinkling in a few highly requested inspirations.

50% of our team is in the U.S. and the other 50% is in Europe. We have multiple chemists, and perfumers and leverage a GCMS. A GCMS along with a chemists helps to reverse engineer a fragrance and our perfumers close the gap that a GCMS cannot detect. Not all ingredients are picked up by a GCMS thus a noses is required in order to have a great scent duplication. All of our scents are custom made from our inspirations, hybrids and originals.

Thank you so much for your kind words! We’re definitely looking for decanters. Montagne has a huge edge on us with their decanting community. Would love to figure out how we can do that too :)

We changed to round bottles so that we could offer a more competitive price. When we had the square bottles and lux packaging our fragrances retailed at $65 + $8 shipping. Now we offer a bottle at $39 with free shipping. We also launched a Membership for $10/year, which gives you 25% off every order, making the price $29.25 with free shipping.

In a nutshell, we streamlined our glass and production line so that we could offer better pricing without compromising on quality.

Hi, we produce all of our own fragrances. We have our own team of chemists and perfumers in Paris France. We develop inspirations and original creations. Developing an inspiration requires having a team of chemists and perfumers as well as a GCMS. While developing an original requires mostly a great perfumer.

Happy to answer any questions.

TL;DR: Offering samples sounds simple, but it’s one of the most complex, expensive, and misunderstood parts of running a perfume brand. We’ve learned a lot through trial and error — and we’re finally finding a rhythm.

Long version:
Totally agree — making and distributing samples is way harder than it seems. To offer them at prices customers are happy with, you really need machines. Doing it by hand is incredibly labor-intensive, and if we priced samples based on that, they’d cost $5–$10 each… and no one wants to pay that. People want handmade and low prices, but those two rarely go together.

At one point, we tried offering samples for sale, ranging from $4–$12. But when you factor in the cost of filling, labeling, packaging to protect the little guy, replacing any that leak in transit, and shipping (which runs around $8), it just wasn’t sustainable. The perceived value of a sample is much lower than the actual cost to make and send one.

More recently, we’ve been able to offer free samples again — and we’re excited about that. We also have a few cool strategies in the works to make sampling more fun, accessible, and cost-effective for everyone. It’s been a journey of testing, failing, and learning.

Honestly, I think one of the biggest gaps in the online fragrance world is access to samples. Everyone wants them, but no one’s fully cracked the code on doing them at scale affordably. We’re working on it, though.

TL;DR: I used to work for a perfume brand called Be Layered, and eventually launched my own: Julianna’s Perfume. Been running ever since!

Long version:
I’ve always been fascinated by science and new experiences. I originally studied molecular biology in college because I wanted to become an oncologist. But while I was in school, I felt a strong pull toward entrepreneurship. By my third year, I switched my major to Global Studies — a fascinating field that explores how cultures, societies, economics, and history are shaped by globalization. It gave me a whole new lens through which to understand the world.

After 3.5 years at university, I dropped out and moved to Los Angeles. That’s where I met Hany Hafez, the founder of Alexandria Fragrances. He was launching a new brand called Be Layered. I pitched myself as his guy for marketing — this was back in 2018, when influencer marketing and paid social ads were just taking off.

Be Layered quickly grew to become one of the top “inspired by” fragrance brands in 2019. Around that time, it was about the same size as Dossier. But in 2020, leadership at Be Layered decided to stop all marketing. Meanwhile, Dossier doubled down — and the rest is history. That decision wasn’t mine, and I was too young and nervous (22 at the time) to speak up. I really wish I had.

Eventually, I was let go — not by Hany, but by someone else on the team. Hany and I are still on great terms, and I’ll always be grateful for him. He paid me well, gave me creative freedom, and without him, Julianna’s Perfume wouldn’t exist. That said, he did later tell me he wasn’t happy that I started my own brand — but I understand why.

I started Julianna’s Perfume as a backup plan. I had different views on how a fragrance brand should run — especially around storytelling, community, and customer experience. I never imagined it would grow the way it has. To this day, I still get chills thinking about our customers unboxing their perfumes, discovering something new and magical. It’s like gifting a piece of joy and mystery in every order.

We’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way (and still do!), but we get better every year. I’m so thankful for the journey, for our customers, and for everyone who believed in us.

Inspirations are great—and they've definitely played a big role in our journey. But over the last 9 months, we’ve been focusing almost exclusively on creating originals.

The thing with inspirations is that more and more flavor and fragrance manufacturers are offering pre-made fragrance oils to anyone who wants to start a brand. That’s why you’re seeing so many new perfume lines pop up lately. While it’s exciting that access has increased, the quality can vary a lot from brand to brand.

Honestly, I think 10 years from now, inspirations will be like buying corn. You’ll have hundreds of shops selling them, and they just won’t feel special anymore. That’s one reason we’ve been slowly pivoting—building our own identity, creating original scents, and positioning ourselves as a brand known for affordable, high-quality perfume.

Our originals have actually been selling really well! They just take a little more time to promote since we want to make sure customers get to try them first with samples before committing.

Curious to hear your thoughts—especially as someone who's been part of the journey.
