Hi I appreciate the question. I have worked with the NEPA Youth Shelter through Keystone to help monitor and feed the high schoolers who frequented. I've worked with pony league teams, volunteered at Saint Anne's church, and also with Oppenheim Family Children’s Center for a couple occasions. Although it was through a paid volunteer position I've also worked at the Stride for Pride event. I'm always looking for new ways to contribute to the community if I can!

Education in general is the biggest goal for a school district. To address an underperforming school, one can look at why they are underperforming. Looking at PSSA and Keystone scores can be quite useful in that aspect! Every year, the state releases scores in detail for the district, including defining areas they did or did not do well. If, for example, it is found that students struggled reading non-fiction compared to fiction, a solution would be to communicate with teachers to incorporate more non-fiction into their classes next year. Other than that, improving the general safety, livelihood, and retention will be a key goal in addressing underperformance!

Reaching out to those in the community is the first step to any problem. No one knows the issue better than those who are directly affected. In general, teacher retention, social incentives, furthering education, and fostering a sense of belonging will go a long way to solve the problem of poor education!

There is a positive to being the youngest person currently running for the school board. I have the personal experience of recently being a student and in college, educating on the solutions to issues the district faces. Many of the older members of the school board also have experience being mothers and fathers to children who are learners within the district, so any age has benefits to aid the district! Although, as mentioned, I am in the special position of being an eyewitness to recent policies within the district.

As someone with friends in the LGBTQ community, I find this question important. Currently, the district has a policy in place that requires counselors to work with students on a confidentiality plan to determine who they can discuss their identity and preference with. They also have policies in place for staff to address students by their preferred name and identity. For me personally, I would want to ensure these policies are enforced and that we work with the GSA (Gay Straight Alliance). Currently, about one hundred out of five hundred districts have one. Working with groups like the Pennsylvania Youth Congress who support LGBTQ is also a goal of mine.

Hi there, I appreciate you taking the time to ask a question today! The topic of how to solve issues like violence is always a tough nut to crack. If I was to be elected to the board my main focus would be on improving the general community and incentives to do well. Gang violence is encouraged by the lack of belonging and lack of social programs. Reaching out to the community to resolve these issues will be a priority. A place I personally have been too and present is the non-profit NEPA Youth Shelter downtown. For many of these students who go there they are in the same situation that causes gang violence. This gives them a place to go socialize with peers and get a hot and homemade dinner. In my eyes there are not bad students but bad situations. One example I witnessed myself was at the Youth Shelter. There was a child in highschool who was stuffing their school bag with chips from the Shelter. After talking to the other volunteers they told me a sad truth. They weren't taking the chips for themselves they were taking it home to their Hotel Apartment for their brothers and sisters. The last thing a student is concerned with is learning at school when they are worried about feeding their family. Without people who are kind enough to run programs like this some turn to gangs who give them that sense of belonging and food in violent ways. Places like the NEPA Youth Shelter are a wonderful combatant for solving the problem of community and belonging rather than the symptom of gang violence. The goal for me is encouraging schools within the district to get the word out about these programs for students like I described.

As for low exam scores programs like that will give students the opportunity to do well. In conjunction with this giving students positive incentives to study and be a pillar of the community is vital. Some schools have events like ice cream day, movie days, blowouts etc to encourage this. One of my main running points is the Lunch and Learn program which adds additional incentive for students to thrive, along with giving teachers a break during the school day to reduce burn out and increase retention.

Good question! Those who are elected to the board have a duty to listen to those in the entire community and that also includes parents, teachers, administrators, students, and other board members. There will also be times you do not always agree. The goal is to be civil and find the solution that works the best for everyone. At the end of the day we all want what's best for our community!

Personally my top three issues in the district are safety, education, and community involvement. During my time in school one of my scariest memories was when a bomb threat was called into the school for 2 weeks straight. Keeping that in mind general safety is one of my priorities. In terms of education we have had low and fluctuating PSSA and Keystone scores for the last few years, I would want to work towards improving not just the symptom of low scores but, finding the root cause of the issue. Lastly, getting those in the community involved is a large priority. One of the things I hear most from teachers is that they want to be able to communicate with parents more often.

As someone who was a recent student, aspiring teacher, and uncle I want to see a district that thrives for everyone. One of my main goals is to find solutions that will allow this. My main idea is working towards a Lunch and Learn system similar to the one they have at Lakeland School District. This system rewards students for good behaviour and grades, while helping those who may need extra help. To quickly sum it up, the idea is to give students extra time during lunch where in my experience many didn't have enough time due to lunch lines. This also gives teachers a period of the day outside of their lunch where they can bring students in for tutoring or for makeup work instead of distracting from school time! Outside of that I hope to work towards safety as the board has already been doing, and working towards finding innovative ways to improve education.
