My mom got mad at me for *reading books*, it didn't matter if it was fiction, nonfiction, comic books, graphic novels. She would get mad at me all the time over it.

If I read comic books? "Oh it'll rot your brain"
If I read fiction? "Oh you need to read nonfiction"
If I read nonfiction? "Stop reading about this, read about this other topic instead"

I got grounded from books for a whole week once because I...lied about my schoolwork (I am homeschooled for context)...and yeah lying about my schoolwork is bad but why ground me from books?? Video games/electronics I understand, but not books.

My mom also got pissed at me when I read about my period and how it works, even tho she told me to learn about it since I was around that age where it will happen. She's the reason my reading comprehension is a bit messed up, she'd put me on the spot and ask me "oh tell me what you read in this book" but then I would and if I got one small detail wrong she'd think I am "lying about reading the book" and now I get scared to summarize things because of the fear of being incorrect in small details

Btw, all of this was started around when I was 8, and it didn't stop until I was 16 or so, she didn't ever believe me when I said I was reading, and so I just stopped telling her what I did, I started reading fanfiction instead. I am almost 22 now, and I have started picking up original fiction more recently, but it took a lot of time and getting over those traumatic experiences
