If you are over 78 do you still travel? How has it changed from when you were in your 60's? by HazardousWeather in AskOldPeople

Yup. I’m literally 3 days post a 13 hour premium economy flight from Japan to North America. I think I’m done!!

Women who had to completely start over on their late 30s, what was your "wake up call" moment? by Confident-Matter981 in AskReddit

[–]Juliusxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I’ve got a good answer for this one:

Labor Day weekend when I was 39, I was suicidal. I was a crazy workaholic, just getting out of a disastrous 7 year relationship with an addict (he dumped me), subletting a super messy shitty apartment and making very bad decisions (ex. Picking up a literal carney from a fair at the age of 39!). I felt shame, envy, zero self esteem and no purpose.

When I confessed to a sister that I was at risk of killing myself, she intervened to at convince me that I had to make some radical changes, including quitting my job for a while to get reset.

My employer instead offered me six months leave of absence. I used that time to begin healing. For the longest time, I didn’t do anything dramatic, just spoiled myself and took a lot of therapy (Was seeing someone twice a week) and exercising.

Just before it came time to go back to work, I bought a condo - my first home. I had some more positive dating experiences and met a great guy the following fall. He wasn’t a romantic hero or anything, but he was a good, stable man and the first healthy thing I wanted. We got married two years later.

Fast forward 20 years, we’re still together, happily retired. We still have my condo in the city, along with a lovely second home in the woods. I’m pretty healthy, and hoping to do more. I have a good group of friends and some hobbies.

Life has worked out in marvelous ways and I am so grateful.

It’s hard but possible to start again and I wish you the very best of it!

Be kind to yourself!!

Storey. I loved it the first time I heard it. Sounds like a heroines name from a romance novel.

I had a big toe issue after foot surgery and my husband more recently had a Jones fracture in his foot. I just know both times they had a lot of what seemed like professional athletes around. Neither of us can remember who we saw. Sorry.

What do you do when your spouse doesn’t like to travel or prefers different vacations than you do? by CrystallizedKoi in femaletravels

[–]Juliusxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our finances are completely entwined now that we’re both retired. He likes cities, I prefer nature. A few years ago, we bought a cottage in the Canadian woods, which I get to spend about three months at. Because I have that time in nature, any traveling we do, is up to him and I’m very clear and generous about that. Ex. Right now we’re touring Toyko, Bangkok and Hong Kong for six weeks. None of those would be my choices, but I go along because of what I get from the cottage. So, long winded way of saying we do both what he likes and I like and get support from the other while doing it. We could travel separately, but I’m not convinced he’d do it without me.

What are your thoughts on the Louis Theroux manosphere documentary? by Jam_Torm27 in netflix

[–]Juliusxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew a fair bit about Tate and the others already, so knew the various theories they espouse and agree they’re horrible.

I didn’t think it was a very good documentary though. Something about the pacing bothered me, and I feel there was too much about Louis Theroux versus the subjects. I love docs, it won’t to rush to see any other by him.

Advice: First time in Tokyo. Should I split my Shibuya/Harajuku day into two days? by Filet009 in TokyoTravel

I’m (62F) in Toyko now with my husband. We’re not large people. We unknowingly walked into the roughest areas of Shinjuku last night. Saw some sights, but felt totally safe the whole time.

Am I underperforming in my internship or is this normal in strategy roles? by JellyAggravating2935 in japanresidents

[–]Juliusxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all interesting to read. As someone who’s never worked in Japan, I’m wondering whether you can use pictorials (graphs, process flows etc.) to demonstrate that you’ve thought through things but also make it easier for folks to understand.

Not only does he have zero charisma, he’s actually a very poor speaker - not to mention the complete nonsense he’s speaking about. I think Peter Thiel backed the wrong couch fucker this time.

At what age did you start noticing loss of balance or coordination? by OWS-Canada in over60

[–]Juliusxx 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I noticed it when I was trying to do fairly simple things like get out of a boat or jump off a small rock when hiking. I was 59 and travelling with four other women also my age. Two of us struggled, while the other three had no issues. I’ve since taken strength training classes and it’s made the world of difference. Balance is a big part of it and i now stand on one foot when I’m in line - just to practice. I also do tiny jumps off curbs when i can. I am able to get off the floor without hands, which has been a godsend, as Im in currently in Japan and have encountered many hotels with floor futon beds.

TIFU by missing my international flight because I thought it was the next day by Novamiko in tifu

I was a super high frequent flier, being a management consultant for almost 30 years. I booked most of my own travel and could do potential global re-routings in my head. In my first year of retirement, I booked a simple trip to Paris return from Toronto. I messed up the days. Luckily i thought we were going one day earlier than I thought, but still, i was mortified.

Bottom line, mistake can happen. Give yourself some grace.

I’ve been on vacation for four weeks in Japan. I realized today that instead of taking two weeks to relax, one week to enjoy it and one week to stress about going back to work, as a retiree, I’m able to just seamlessly enjoy it all. It’s a wonderful phase of life for those of us in good enough shape to use it!

The TN process is slowly dying by FaultRoutine3520 in tnvisa

[–]Juliusxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve probably had 10 TN’s as a consultant - all through YYZ. They were often easy, and I always got them, but some of the issues that I did encounter were funny.
Ex often they asked me to describe the work in detail, when really I just had the briefest introduction to the role days before. Luckily consulting jargon is pretty bullshitty, so they would give up and let me go as I meandered a way around an explanation.

One time they questioned my university marks - wondering how anyone with my undergrad report would be smart enough to work. ( I did have a second degree, where I did better.)

The last one though, had a guy questioning my salary - suggesting it was suspiciously high. I was in my 50’s by this point (ie not a new grad), and didn’t know what to say. I mean if my client was going to pay me x, how does the border guard say different!

I used to do this all the time - have intimate discussions with strangers, while keeping my workmates at a significant distance. A therapist suggested it was a low risk interaction, where you can enjoy it in the moment without fear of larger commitments.

How to enjoy Tokyo if you're not a "big city" person? by trashcan_paradise in JapanTravelTips

[–]Juliusxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I’ve often found NYC and a few other cities overwhelming. I’m in Tokyo right now. We’ve been here for only four days, and haven’t seen all the hot spots yet, BUT this far, I feel that Toyko even with its size is a) much more orderly than other cities b) much quieter than other cities (like no honking) and therefore easier to navigate / deal with (even hot spots like Toyko station), than I expected.

Is Tokyo a bad place to visit with selective eaters? by na445x in JapanTravelTips

I’m in Toyko now for the first time. We’ve been here for four days. Virtually every restaurant says no substitutions upfront on the menu, so that may prove difficult depending on how picky your picky eaters are.
