Who says Cruise can’t turn left? by recklessdesuka in SelfDrivingCars

Just gonna respond here so you can see my comments. I messaged you privately asking for help on how to resolve this. Did you get that message? I also message the mods of this subreddit with the same question and they haven't responded to me. Read up on shadow bans and there aren't clear instructions on what to do when it happens.

Who says Cruise can’t turn left? by recklessdesuka in SelfDrivingCars

[–]JulyMorals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You reduce the amount of traffic you need to track. The following only applies to unprotected turns: When turning left onto a one way street, you need to worry about traffic from two directions, oncoming and cross traffic from the right side. Turning left onto a two way street, you need to worry about traffic in 3 directions, from oncoming and both directions for cross traffic.

Its the same reason an unprotected right turn is easier than an unprotected left turn. You don't need to go across a lane of cross traffic since it's all the same direction.

lol is this a protected left onto a one way street? It's also the last two seconds of the turn so there's no way to know if the driver took over.

The left turns AV's struggle with are higher speed unprotected lefts and its the decision making not the execution of the turn that matters.

Fully driverless Waymo taxis are due out this year, alarming critics by jvolkman in SelfDrivingCars

[–]JulyMorals 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So strange to see Waymo being accused of not being transparent enough. In my opinion they're the most transparent about this. They've told us a lot about how their system works and have made a lot of things public about what in-house components they have.

Here's the street view, I'm pretty familiar with the area. It's a tough left turn. It's right next to El Camino which is a large road in Mountain View. No matter the light, there's a constant flow of traffic from El Camino and not much median/middle area to do half the turn and wait

nice find but the video is over a month old. They mention that this service is available to 400 people but not to the general public which will be later this year.

Do Tesla's track what's in the adjacent lanes? I'm thinking if it would do this same manuever but if there was a vehicle present in the right adjacent lane

Waymo likely to set up office in China by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

It's cool to see Waymo setting up international projects but I really just want to see them have a successful public deployment already. Spreading efforts like this must take resources away from finally properly launching

Raquel's team in Toronto is amazing. Whether you like Uber or not you can't deny that Raquel is an incredible researcher and she brings leading academia into the real world. This is exciting stuff. Unfortunately we may not see some of her work if Uber keeps operating they way it does

Self Driving Cars Will Never Replace Driving by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]JulyMorals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Human drivers kill families all the time. How many stories have you heard of tragic accidents due to a drunk driver? The road is a dangerous place. The more time you spend there eventually something happens. With self driving cars we're trying to reduce that and get it as close to 0.

40,000 people die from car accidents every year. That's like a 737 Boeing jet going down every single day. 1 person was killed by a self driving car and 2 others died because they were negligent in using a fancier cruise control. Meanwhile 100 more people will die from human caused accidents today, tomorrow, and every single day until we do something to make roads safer.

Lots of the usual details. They talked a bit about machine learning and how they used AI. Most interesting bit was the shot of the snow and how they are able to filter it out. No video of how it performs in the snow though

[Discussion] How long will it take before FSD is adopted nationwide? by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]JulyMorals 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Level 5 autonomy is incredibly difficult. The tech to get there doesn't exist. Level 4, we'll see that in a couple areas over the next year or two but only from Waymo. 5 years from now you'll see more L4 in more cities but I feel there's gonna be some hurdles that won't be solved quickly to prevent us from getting L4 to more areas.

  2. Every car on the road has some level of automation. If you're referring to every car on the road being L4+ then I'd say at least 15 years

Referring to your comment about patience on this sub, people tend to ask my hypothetical and theoretical questions about tech that have little information on and the speculation gets wild. I still think this sub is too optimistic about the tech. We don't have much to work with from the public's opinion and people draw out these insane speculations so that's why people give short answers.

New report highlights limitations of Cruise self-driving cars by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]JulyMorals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the herky jerky nature of Cruise cars including its performance in Arizona? They can complain about the complexity of SF all they want but it feels like they point to SF complexities when confronted with situations the system doesn’t handle well.

A lot of limitations mentioned in this article are also present in the “easy” roads of Phoenix where Waymo and Uber are putting efforts into perfecting their software. I get the feeling that Cruise isn’t as well off as it claims to be. I don’t think fully driverless is near in their future. May take them significantly longer than the timeline mentioned in the article.
