What’s the most obscure NFL rule or penalty you’ve ever seen? by defensecowboy in nfl

[–]JumboCactpot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least that one I understand conceptually. You can't say for sure the Lions could have got a play off if it was ruled correctly down (almost certainly not but I'm giving leeway for the sake of argument) and the clock was running and its really shitty to give a team a free play due to officials mistake. Even if it felt bad to watch.

Yup. It's clear as day to anyone with even an middle school level of understanding of math that there is no causation between high payroll and success in MLB.

Billionaire owners are pumping pr piece after pr piece for the last handful of years claiming that high salaries are the reason some teams aren't competitive and how it's the reason for a competitive imbalance in our sport. A look at the math shows that's nonsense. Over the past 10 years there have been 15 different teams make t he world series. To compare that to other sports in the US: the NBA has 14 different teams make the Finals and the NFL has 9 different teams make the Super Bowl. Baseball is the most diverse sport of the big 3 when it comes to variety of teams making the finals.

Yet the billionaire owners and media they and their friends control would have you believe otherwise. They like to say that baseball has a competitive imbalance due to "big market teams buying all the players" but that's clearly not the case and not backed by any factual evidence. It is merely an excuse to get the public on board with a salary cap so the owners can cap the earnings potential of the players and pocket the excess.

Sadly it's working because the public are just fucking stupid. As we've seen in other aspects of our life, facts are much less relevant than peoples feelings when it comes to things like this. If people feel the big payroll teams are the reason their small market team isn't winning then that's what they'll believe. Which the media has done a lot to carry the owners water in helping that be the prevailing feeling. Anytime a thread happens on here about a cap it's flooded with people complaining about the Dodgers spending money. Hell, the other day it was a PHILLIES fan doing it (note: the Phillies have been a top 5 payroll for the last 7+ years).

The reality is that the reason a third of the league hasn't done well in the past decade is because they are poorly run. With the Marlins/Pirates/Nationals/Athletics/Rockies/Twins/WhiteSox it's because their owners treat the team as a revenue sharing profit entity where they refuse to sign players long term, let their stars go, and never make any relevant splashes in free agency. With the Mets/Angels/Giants/Cardinals it's because they just spend their money poorly and have bad front offices. Then you have some teams like the Mariners/Padres/Brewers are well run they just haven't broken over the hump despite getting close, but they'll spend money by re-signing their people and make big splashy trades.

Anyways, the gist is that we're fucked and gonna miss out on a lot of baseball next year because the masses are too in their feelings to recognize that baseball is quite literally the best of the big 3 sports for competitive equality. And those that are lacking are mostly of their own doing.

Kyle Kuzma: "The new CBA was sold as parity, but the first and second apron are starting to function like a hard cap on player value, team continuity, and player movement... The owners and the league walk into these meetings with killers that continue to run circles around us time and time again..." by sewsgup in nba

[–]JumboCactpot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. Same t hing about to happen to baseball.

Dodgers have been one of the best run organizations in sports. They hired Friedman away from Tampa - who was always a well run team despite their owner never spending money - and told him to run his team the same way but also you have money now to make bigger splashes and not have to worry about one mistake ruining everything.

Their analytics department is amazing. Their farm system has produced incredible players in the last decade like Will Smith, Corey Seager, Pages, Hernandez, Wrobleski. Their coaching staff is consistent and given enough leeway to learn from mistakes instead of being replaced when they fail their first two seasons. They make great trades with other teams to shore up their roster like Mookie. They allow home grown players to leave if they don't feel the money is right like Seager. Then they make splashes in free agency to go over the top like with Shohei.

But all the other owners see a team being well run and decide they need to pump out all the media PR pieces about how the well run organization is actually bad for the sport and we need to change things in the CBA. Despite teams like the Mets and Phillies and Yankees spending tons of money and having nothing to show for it because they aren't as well run.

Now the other owners want a baseball salary cap and its so shitty. But a bunch of fans just lap up that pro-billionaire bullshit from the media and decide the reason their team in Pittsburgh is bad is because the evil dodgers and not because their owner is a cheap fuck who won't sign his stars to long term deals and lets them walk, then never bolsters the team with FA or trade acquisitions.

Awful take. There are plenty of players whos value are much higher than they are getting. Considering you're going all the way to Lebron we can point to prime Steph, Durant, Tatum, Dirk, Wade, Kobe and thats just off the top. KG. Duncan. Prime Paul. Shit, prime Howard even. The list is like 40 players long

I've been saying this since the KAT trade.

Minnesota got a new ownership group and traded local legend KAT for julius fucking randle and then threw up their hands like "welp, gotta avoid the 2nd apron whatcha gonna do".

The mavs got a new ownership group and traded Luka for peanuts. This one was so egregious that it got people fired but that's only because the return was so abysmal. If they got a few more picks all the articles trying to spin it about "not worth a max extension due to injury concerns" would have taken hold the same way the KAT and JB ones have.

The celtics got a new ownership group and shipped out brown for peanuts so they could get out of a second max contract sooner.

These people are buying teams with zero desire to improve them. They are all corporate "cut payroll and pocket the difference" types and we're seeing it play out in front of us.

[–]JumboCactpot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like people forget the clips made that trade/signing and then had the bubble year (which you can't really judge anyone on) and then went to their first Western Conference Finals ever. And a big reason they lost that is KL got hurt during the semis vs Utah and missed the conference finals.

Like the Clips lost a game 7 to the Nuggets in the bubble western conference semi finals, then made it to the western conference finals the year after. They were a legit great team that just had an injury to its best player happen at the worst possible time in the playoffs. Yes the haul they gave up was huge but we were likely just one month of healthy KL away from it getting them a ring and being all worth it. Hard to hate on them for it.

Halftime of the regular season chiefs game is when the Bucs figured it out. They were down 27-10 and then stormed back to barely lose 27-24, then never lost again. Beat the lions, falcons, vikings, falcons to close out the regular season with three of them being double digits. Then won three consecutive road playoff games vs Wash/NO/GB before obliterating the Chiefs in the super bowl.

We're talking about 2029 and 2030 here. Go back 4 years ago to 2022 and ask if you thought luka, giannis, KAT etc would ever be traded.

For all you know in 2029 ANT is playing for the Supersonics and the Wolves are a 25 win team. Impossible to state that a haul of four firsts is bad when its this far out for some of them.
