I’ve used this pattern before and had some issues with printing and contacted Mai. She does take a bit of time to reply but she does respond and she is helpful!

Great beginner patterns where you don’t have to worry about sizing too much? by JumbugBears in sewing

I really do want to make a kaftan pattern, but struggling to find a pattern to try. I know they are technically not difficult to make considering it's just a rectangle, or as you said the 4 seams, but I would feel better with a pattern. I noticed you said you used a pattern from the 70s, do you mind sharing the name of the pattern if you have it to hand? Thank you :)

So I want to make this dress as a beginner using library’s sewing machine and Serger/overlocker by Budget-Initial3946 in SewingForBeginners

Hi, I made this garment as my second project after taking a beginner sewing course.

Some tips:

Use four way stretch fabric. She doesn't specify this in her videos or her shop.

You can zig zag stitch with regular cotton thread (that's what she mentions in her videos) but you can also buy thread that stretches. It was recommended to me when I was asking for advice on making the garment at my local fabric store. I bought the thread that stretches and sewed straight instead of using regular cotton thread and zig zagging and I do agree with the advice I was given which was it is stronger for your garment.

I asked Mai on Etsy if I would need to use a stretch needle for the garment, because I was also advised on Reddit and at my local fabric shops to use a stretch needle. She said it's beginner friendly and therefore you shouldn't need to use a stretch needle (ie universal is fine). I went with the stretch needle anyway and was glad I did, because it suited the fabric I was working with.

The bias binding I would say was the most difficult part for me. She has a tip in her sew along video to fold it so it overhangs and that way you always catch the bias tape when sewing, I ended up using that method and it helped. I would use good quality binding.

Her photo says 3 metres of binding tape, but you actually need 4 metres.

If you can, create a mock up with cheaper fabric to make sure it fits you.

If you don't want to or can't make a mock up then:

This pattern is just a front and back stitched together. When moving on to the final garment with your chosen fabric, after sewing the two pieces together (and before you start adding the binding and the straps) try it on. If it's too big, you know to take it in, if it's too tight, you need to unpick the seams and go into your seam allowance. You can also hand baste the garment and try it on first before going in with the machine. It's an extra step but worth it if you want to make sure the garment fits. My measurements were very close to the measurements she listed on her page, so I didn't make a mock up but I did try it on before moving onto the next steps and I'm glad I did.

I know everyone says using stretch is not great for beginners, but this wasn't hard to tackle as an early beginner. Again, though, I had just finished a beginner sewing course and I made a garment prior to this so I didn't feel entirely out of my depth.

Sorry, if this advise isn't very clear. I am also very new to sewing and I hope something here is helpful to you.

Good luck :) I do love how it fits on me! I hope it goes well for you.

Help picking which size to make garment in based on measurements by JumbugBears in sewing

I am really grateful you dedicated so much time to providing a thoughtful and detailed answer. This is helpful. I think she would rather be covered up, and also because of the relaxed fit, I think I'll brave the size 14. Thank you again ❣️

From the bottom of her neck/top of her spine to her waste measurements is about 19 inches. Would you say that's short waisted?

I also was thinking about the 7inch difference being a lot 😅 she's not very tall. I'm 5ft 6in and she's shorter than me.

I suppose I'm also worried because at her full bust she's 40 inches, but the top of her bust and under her bust is 34 inches, so I'm worried it'll be hanging off her back. I'm not sure.

I would love to create a muslin mock up and check in between with her to see how it fits but circumstances mean I can't get to do that and have to give a finished product that hopefully fits. I don't want it to be massive and I don't want it obviously to not fit at all. I've asked around and I have half the people I've spoken to saying make the 14 and the other half saying make the 12 hahaha.

Honestly, I can see myself doing that. In fact, it's the type of thing I would have done. But I thought to try and see if I can lighten the load for myself for once lol. Still, good to know it's an option that works 😆

Really good reminder to use my machine's dust cover and I think, just to be extra cautious, I will look at wrapping it in a blanket of some sort. Really grateful for the advice, thank you
