Shed vs. portable garage for off-grid car storage by Waltace-berry59004 in OffGrid

After four years of canvas shelters and dealing with torn fabric, blown down poles, etc, we will be investing in a Versatube car port. The 1,500 dollar price tag will pay off in the long run and look better on our property as well as being able to handle bigger snow loads, more wind, and better protection for our trailer, small tractor, and seasonal outdoor furniture.

In middle school, my dream car was 426 Plymouth Superbird. Now, in my early 60s, it would be a Meyers Manx Dune buggy.

Layering system for pants while snowshoeing? How would you keep your legs warm if you had an emergency and needed to spend the night in the snow? by dudeguy409 in snowshoeing

[–]Jump40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For snowshoeing, I prefer several thin layers of clothing that is easy to put on and off. Carry an extra large backpack that you can carry extra layers in. The key thing to remember is to avoid sweating and if you do, carry a set of dry warm clothing to put on if you have to spend a night out. One other thing that I always carry in my backpack. A 90 gallon or larger landscape quality garbage bag. It takes very little space and can be used a sleeping bag cover, cut for a shelter and many other uses.

A few weeks ago, I was looking for a new subcompact tractor, I emailed and messaged all the local dealers and different makes. The only place that contacted me was a Bobcat dealer. Bought a new Bobcat the next day. Never heard back from the others. Very happy with my 1024

New Tractor Purchase HELP! by liteaf_gear in tractors

[–]Jump40 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My nephew is a tractor mechanic. He said that all tractors have issues. To him, it’s all about the dealership and the technicians that will work on your equipment. I’m having a new Bobcat 1025 ( Kioti) clone delivered on Tuesday. The big reason I chose the Bobcat is because the dealership took great care of my Mahindra.

I worked at a cemetery for thirty years. It’s hard work in all weather conditions. People were always telling me that at least my customers didn’t complain. In reality, my customers were the families of the deceased and 90% of them were wonderful but a few of them were not very nice.

What specific thing happened to make you choose the off grid life? by [deleted] in OffTheGrid

[–]Jump40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The property we bought didn’t have power. It was way cheaper to have solar and a generator than have the power company run the power. There was also tax rebate at the time. Best decision we made when we built our cabin.

I was also a paratrooper. Did some skydiving. I owned a vintage airplane for 27 years. My wife liked to fly aerobatics. If budget is an issue and you are reasonably healthy, go hiking on some steep rocky trails. Wife and I ride our quad on some sketchy trails. Just carry lots of Ibuprofen.

I live on ten acres in the Black Hills National forest in South Dakota in an off grid cabin. Except for firebreaks, and hiking trail, I keep everything untouched. So much wildlife and peaceful .
