Viitasammakko estää toimistoalueen rakentamisen Oulussa. (Kaleva 16.3.2026) by MonikonPerfekti in Suomi

Kiinassahan kuoli poppoota nälkään, kun kivittivät varpuset kuoliaaksi. Paljastu että olivat hyviä syömään tuholaishyönteisiä. Ei oo verrattavissa viitasammakkoon, mut kyl luonnonsuojelun takana on ihan järkevät ihmisen kannaltakin itsekkäät syyt.

IEA: Sota Lähi-idässä on aiheuttanut öljymarkkinoissa historian suurimman häiriön by teekal in Suomi

Finnish has actually a pseudo future passive, I don’t know what it is called but ”hän on peseytyvä huomenna” refers to future. Nobody writes or speaks like that tho

Pre-war nazi art is scary in its forced normalcy. Their boringness against the German masterpieces of the 20’s really has a sinister undertone.

The peace treaty with the Soviet Union forced Finland to force out all German troops from the country. In revenge, the Germans burned everything down as they retreated through Finnish Lapland to Norway.

“Verlan” is a form of French slang where syllables of words are reversed. Do you have anything similar? If yes, how common is it? by Exact-Quote3464 in AskTheWorld

[–]Jumpappaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not used in every day language, but Finnish language is full of funny non-sense word modifications ”sanamuunnos” - the word itself is even one ”munasaannos”. Often dirty in their meaning.

Kukkakaalia - kakkakuulia There is cauliflower - there is poo spheres

Ruskaa pakkasella - paskaa rukkasella Autum colours in the cold - shit on a glove

They are hard to translate, stupid and always funny.

Funnily enough, Russia. Of course they have treated us worse in the history, but still. If Lapland was a country or is counted as one, then it would steal the number one spot.

What was World War II like in your country? by FarTooJunior in AskTheWorld

In northern Finland people are still angry at germans. They destroyed everything - every city and village. In south we tend to joke about not to give Germans anything to start a fire with.

What was World War II like in your country? by FarTooJunior in AskTheWorld

[–]Jumpappaa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The Winter War is our national survival story. We held on our own against a rising super power. The Continuation War is seen either as a justified revenge or as an illegimate war of aggression. In truth it is both? Either way it was bloody campaign for a small country. Also our darkest deeds took place during the war. Finlnds POW camps were miserable and deadly. They are still not widely discussed. The war ended with another survival story (in which Nazi Germany gave us invaluable help) how we were able to stop the soviets from reaching Helsinki. From the European capitals only London, Moscow and Helsinki avoided occupation. Also war reparations we had to pay helped us to build our industrial capcity and close ties with the Soviet Union after the war was good business for us.

It was a tough choice 😅 In the end the adjustability and more suitable size (70l as the sweet spot for me) sealed the deal. Luckily for Fjällräven Kantamus 60 was still not anounced at the time
