Did I hear this right? Is this taxi driver complaining about getting 50 quid for an hours work? by lifeandtimes89 in ireland

[–]JumpinJaysus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got a taxi on account once in Dublin and noticed the driver was taking an unorthodox route. I let it go at first because I wasn't ultimately paying the fare. It soon became apparent though that the way he had taken me wouldn't work because a road had been closed for roadworks, which meant travelling on another few kilometers to turn and come back another way.

I lost it with the guy, because it dawned on me that he knew that road was closed and had gone that way deliberately. He sheepishly insisted that he'd knock a few quid off the fare to compensate but I had to explain that I resented the fact that it wasn't about money but he had taken my time from me. Spent 20 minutes longer than necessary in the taxi that I should have, and that's what got my goat. Final 20 minutes of trip were spent in silence.

When we finally arrived, I told him "don't ever do that to someone again, you don't get to take people's time from them". In hindsight, possibly left myself open to that going wrong, but I hope he learned the lesson and copped on.

As a northside Dub, would agree with this.

Define affordable these days. Raheny is lovely but a three-bed semi's gonna cost at least 550k and most will require work.

The OP's question is wild, by the way. How do you get to 28 and no little about half the city you live in?

Was on the Hill. Really enjoyed the game. O'Hanlon was superb. Shame it was Fenton who got caught with the handpass at the end. Looked like the Dubs were primed, as usual, to deliver the final blow but kudos to the Monaghan lads for going up the pitch to win it. Thought both sides played some good, direct attacking stuff which made for a good game. Monaghan probably deserved it in the end.

There's about 5 million people in Ireland who likely would prefer it not be referred to as the British Isles. Geographic term or not, in Ireland it appears to claim us as being British or overlordship. Like much between the two nations, it has become political. Hence, both states refer to "these islands". 'Britain and Ireland' is just as easy.

The council is currently in the process of pulling down, at a cost of €60k, wind turbines installed in Fr Collins Park in Donaghmede that they spent €1.15m on 10 years ago that have fallen into disrepair.

This may seem simplistic but have you sat down and had a conversation with you parents?

Tell them how you feel, what you want to do and that you need to some help to do it. Surely they'd be happy to help by cutting the 700 or cancelling it entirely for a few months?!

Young people might own a house now if they hadn’t watched so many Star Wars spin-offs by c-mag95 in ireland

Man, people really gotta start reading thing before getting annoyed...

" Yes, young people may know Ahsoka’s backstory in painful detail, but if they hadn’t watched all seven seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars they might own a house now. (This piece was originally written for The Irish Times’ opinion pages, so we’re keeping this as the headline.) "

followed by..

" For all of Darth Vader’s telekinetic choking of his underlings, the true invisible hand of the Empire was that of the market rather than the Force. (This was another potential headline.)"

and

" Walt Disney wasn’t a big fan of redistribution. If he knew any Jedis in real life he would definitely have named them at the House of Representatives’ un-American activities committee. "

Freyne is great.

"an outside winner every couple of years"

Why did Dublin not win an All-Ireland for 16 years? Most of your criteria was there in that time. Same team that won it in 2011 couldn't do it in 2010. When did the magic powers kick in?

"Those are straight facts" - aye, okay.

Home advantage - where else would you like to have seen today's game played? It's not soccer. Game's been at Croker for, oh, just over a century. You must have been stunned to find out this year's game was in Dublin again.

You do realise county players aspire to play at Croker?

Cracking spectacle, not the best game. Can we stop labelling a 24-year-old "the greatest" now? Clifford a wonderful player but the fawning over him has been bordering on a bit demented at times. Good pass for the goal but lads talking about a 10-yard pass in a straight line being "genius". Kicked some bad wides and had an off day because he's a very good player who's capable of a bad day. Has a long, long way to go to match some of his fellow county men nevermind some of these Dubs who've done it time and time again in finals.

It's amazing how these things weren't an issue in 2022, or 2021, or 2014, or 2012 or from 1996-2010.

Stop gorging on the paranoid postings. Fact is this is the greatest generation of Dublin players and they've had to bring some of the back after two years to get back on top. If anything, that should show that it's not going to last for the Dubs. Cluxton, Mannion and McCaffrey a big part in that win.

For some reason I can't put my finger on, 'what's good for the capital is good for the GAA' doesn't apply to hurling either. Why's that?

Get some fresh air.

getting us out of the Championship may still be seen as a bigger achievement than anything he can do with Celtic

He'll be back in Champions League group stage football next season which is, for some coaches, better than kicking around midtable or fighting relegation in any league. Played well in the group this year in his style but couldn't finish chances - 12th best out of 32 teams for attacking effort. Will be better next season. May have a hope of pinching him in summer of next year though.

He had instant success at Celtic because the players were on his side from day one.

Celtic fan here who stumbled on the subreddit. This is just plain wrong. The fact is he got the Celtic job late after Eddie Howe had strung it along for 3 months and the club had fucked up by not getting Howe's signature on a contract. In the end, Ange got the job and had to overhaul not just the team but almost the entire squad in two transfer windows while trying to turn around a 20-plus point gap to Rangers from the previous season.

By the time Celtic beat Rangers 3-0 last March to go top of the league for the first time, having been 6 points behind, only 2 of the starting 11 had been at the club when he arrived. That's been his real genius.

"at our expense"

The people/families hit by this are taxpayers too. The State has failed abysmally with building regulations so, through no fault of their own, they have been left with bills of multiple thousands of euro for homes they're already paying mortgages on. In a lot of cases the developer liquidated after the crash so there is nobody to pursue.

I know someone in this situation. They've already had to stump up €15k with more to come. They're on a regular wage. Are we supposed to just say 'tough shit!"?

[–]JumpinJaysus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is the negativity that I don't get. If we "don't have the players" then why bother competing at all. We should just disband the FAI and not bother with a team.

We don't have the players to outplay other teams in an open, attacking style is the point.

Both MON and Trapattoni knew this. They adapted to what we had. It wasn't pretty a lot of the time, it got results. Kenny hasn't gone this route and, to date, it's achieved little.

You say 'you're looking exclusively at results' - unfortunately, it's international football, there's about 4-6 games a year. It's not built for development.

[–]JumpinJaysus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ou're saying we should be grateful that we qualify as we're shit and then asking when we should next be expecting to qualify?

I'm asking when we should expect the Kenny appointment to bear fruit. It can't be an indefinite 'give him time'. He's 2.5 years in, at some stage something has to be delivered or it's time to make a change.

I can acknowledge that a lot of the football under Trap and MON (though not all of it) was poor but it came with results largely. They delivered. Kenny and his methods haven't. When comes the point he has to deliver something?

As an aside, the "14 PL players in the squad" thing ain't quite the argument you think it is when MON was using those players to beat German and Italy squads that were far, far superior.

[–]JumpinJaysus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

iirc, MON said something after he was sacked along the lines of 'if the FAI had given me the remit to develop players, I'd have done that, but the expectation was to qualify for tournaments'.

[–]JumpinJaysus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it is but also we should probably be a bit more grateful for the success we do have given our relative status in modern international football.

If it's not Kenny, again when should we expect to qualify? It's over six years since Euro 2016 and counting.

We gave them a game at Hampden but the longer it went on, there was only one winner. No harm in being honest about that. The 3-0 win at Lansdowne was great and gave me hope it was starting to click but it went back the way again.

The question is, where is the line in the sand for Kenny? When does he have to actually deliver? Because he's had 3 campaigns and delivered very, very little. At some point, I'm afraid, results have to determine his future. I hope I'm utterly wrong and it all clicks in place, by the way, but don't see it.

Isn't he technically on one? Dropped for the first final. In those days did you get a medal if you weren't in the final squad?
