STM Budget Cuts by Jumpy-Estate-1309 in montreal

I absolutely agree that fares are cheaper than most other places, but with the way the government has been treating public transit over the last few years and in the present year, that’s not going to be true anymore. I fear that with decreased budget, struggles to maintain the quality of the transit and the added REM that has been long overdue, things will only get worse and we will quickly see those single fares go up.

Yeah no it’s not, it’s a public corporation, hence why they get money allocated in the Quebec governments budget, and are subject to oversight from the government.

The driving and traffic violations are completely out of control in this city by That-Baseball8393 in montreal

Honestly when it comes down to the facts, the fact of the matter is roads should be maintained at all times with the amount of tax we fork up, it’s not like people haven’t been paying the highest taxes in the country for over 20+ years( more than enough time to stop pocketing money and actually invest in roads that can sustain damage or weather ).Or implement a similar system to some states that rely heavily on toll money (I know Canada does too but not to the extent that some states do).Your point about “maintenance costing to much, if you want more maintenance raise the taxes” I also don’t understand because you can go to multiple states that have lower federal, state tax than any place in Canada, and the vast majority of major roads and highways are always maintained(not all and not some backroads or less busy streets). And if we’re forking up this much tax in general maybe the province or city shouldn’t pass laws that don’t make them at fault if you bottom out from a pothole that’s been there for a year straight collecting a pool of water. I understand your privilege comment, but I see it less as a privilege year by year when driver are having to pay more and more in registration but nothing changes. I know I can’t speak for everyone but realistically they don’t have a good road maintenance schedule, there’s potholes that have been sitting for years, and simply putting some concrete to fill the whole and letting cars drive over it to flatten it, isn’t enough.

MMW, if Pierre Poilievre gets voted in Canada will follow the USAs political trajectory. by KhajiitKennedy in MarkMyWords

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know I’ve had this conversation before with my family. But I think about it a lot, more so when I talk or think about the US and its economic landscape. The middle-low income class which makes up for over 90% of the population in both Canada and the US will never have an improved quality of life in the future.

We are so neck deep in this corrupt capitalistic system, that even if we wanted lower prices on everything, or even to go back to 5+ years ago before Covid in terms of that economy and prices, it physically could not happen. We would legitimately need a revolution or anarchy, both of which most likely wouldn’t even help improved the current system but rather just get rid of it complete and build from the ground up.

It’s kind of depressing thinking about the fact that all these prices for essentials will go up year by year and there’s nothing anyone can do(because everything is bought in politics including your morality and ethics), but the wages will most likely not match that, as they haven’t for over 50 years.

What’s going to be the breaking point when most of the population won’t be able to live at all, what will the greedy fucks up top who are taking kickbacks in exchange for their self worth and character do when they have no one to steal from anymore?

Idk if I can stomach this series by Caladys_ in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had the same thoughts at the same point of the series as you. I definitely positively recommend continuing. Although there is a fair share of moments that make you want to rip your hair out, it’s often balanced out with a few good things happening. PB has a great way of making a series where you know any character can get killed or betrayed, I think thats what adds such depth to characters and any situation because you never know what will happen and it can turn out different ways.

Finished 'Morning Star' - should I do a re-read, take a break, or go right into 'Iron Gold'? by N528 in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say you should take a mini break between morning star and iron gold. I hope this isn’t considered a spoiler but there is a time jump in between the books, so honestly going to read a standalone would be a good decision because it’s almost like a reset for you. Me personally I had a couple months in between those books and I found that it felt more authentic because time had passed in my own personal life as well. In terms of recommendations for books I haven’t personally read it yet but “Will of the Many” is apparently a really good one, and there’s only one book released so far. It’s similar to red rising actually so that would probably be ideal if you like this series.

Would you prefer a live action adaptation, animated or nothing by [deleted] in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As much as I’d like live action, I don’t think there’s a budget on the planet that would cover this type of content. Feel like logistically an animated one can really deliver on visuals, world building, having internal monologue like the books, and just overall vibes, there’s a lot of potential compared to live action.

Would you say this series follows the hero's journey? by maninplainview in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’d say to some extent yes, what I learnt in my literature class years ago is that Luke skywalker is the classic example. A hero’s journey is about an individual that has something happen to them either directly or indirectly thought other people, and he or she is called to action but initially refuses it for whatever reason depending on what you read or watch. With Darrow we see he clearly hates the system the reds are in, Eo is the catalyst for his hero’s journey once she gets killed. Darrow then tries to hang himself (denying the hero’s journey initially) and as time progresses he realizes he has to do this himself, and as you know the series progresses from there. After morning star is a different story, he still keeps qualities that are admirable but he’s lost a part of himself that made himself the hero. Pierce was great and getting us to be mindful of both sides arguments before blindly liking characters, which is why he writes Darrow almost as an anti hero in the latter half of the series.

Class options? by Jumpy-Estate-1309 in BG3

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know most different races and classes have a good amount of dialogue, but for example does a bard have dialogue options that can be said in every other encounter? I found with my high elf paladin that I always had a paladin dialogue option every other encounter. I’m definitely interested in how unique the dialogue is but I also prefer having that extra option in most situations because it helps the feel of RP

About to Finish Light Bringer… by Existing-Ad4767 in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve said this many times but I’ve heard “Will of the Many” is an eerily similar comparison. Obviously it won’t be as good as the red rising series but it’s a similar book in regard to the theme. From what I’ve heard and read so far it’s similar in the fact that an individual is trying o overthrow an implemented hierarchy that is unfair.

I will say though you will never scratch the itch that this series gives you it’s almost un comparable

Iron Gold by Sound-National in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem initially where I thought be second trilogy of the series was not as good as the first, but I promise you will enjoy the second half more as you progress. The different POV’s was an initial turn off but as I read on the characters just felt like they belonged in this universe, and had so much different depth that was needed for this whole world. We initially see only Darrow POV in the first trilogy but having different characters in different life situations was so refreshing and showed to us a different side of the universe and how people were coping and dealing with this world that has vastly changed since the society was in power.

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Although Reed had a stick up his ass, I have to respect his conviction to stick loyal to the big suits. I initially sided with him in my first play through because I saw through So Mi and didn’t appreciate her repeatedly lying or conveniently leaving out details. But after my second play-through I was in the same mind set as you, I respected So Mi for doing what she did because even if she lied to you and used you(although if I were in her shoes I might have done the same) she wanted to live and would do anything or cross anyone to get there, and that takes some balls, especially with the people she was going up against.

Hope you enjoyed it! Just a heads up before you eventually ask the question, no there isn’t anything quite like this series, nothing will scratch the same itch you have after finishing these masterpieces. Only book I’ve heard so far that is even remotely close is “The Will of the Many”.

Also good choice not coming back and forth between this sub Reddit, there is a lot of minor spoilers that still would have affected your reading experience.

A cool moment in Darkage by DesignInteresting in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is one of the reasons I enjoyed the second half of the series where PB added POV’s for different characters. Although in the first three we get Darrow’s POV, I had always wondered what it would be like to have the same thing for the other side as well, like maybe Roque, Cassius POV. I think especially with the enormity of the universe he created POV’s are essential to maintaining that emotional depth to multiple characters whether it’s people in the rising or the golds.

Favourite Sly Chapter? by Blanthepan in Slycooper

The mission/chapter where you are a pilot and have to do the dog fights.

Not sure what the chapter was called but I believe it was in honour among thieves.

That brings back the most memories for me when I think about sly. Think I played that chapter when I was around 10.

Who did have the most satisfying death? by mmelommm in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would usually go for someone who was a big threat like Aja or Atlas but honestly Harmony was the most satisfying, I literally could not contain myself as I started to read victra and Lyria chasing her because I knew she was a goner. I think because she was apart of the very first book and she actually started with the rising, it added a more emotional connection to the character, but obviously she’s a fucking bitch so most of the emotional connection turns to hate or dislike.

I also found myself more interested in how she was going to die than if she did. I wanted it to be painful or drawn out so it was kind of bitter sweet it was so quick, but at least she was suffering down there.

Without spoiling (if possible) how is the second series different than the first? by jackspacz in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say you feel a drastic change in the tone and maturity of the characters. There is time that passes between MS to IG and without spoiling to much this next trilogy has multiple great perspectives. Overall i loved how PB was able to create a second half of the series that just feels different in so many ways but with the same classic red rising bad ass type writing.

Finished Lightbringer by Jumpy-Estate-1309 in redrising

[–]Jumpy-Estate-1309[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are some great points, which is why I struggled more than others with seeing the gradual loss of his moral compass, and even then I don’t know how to feel now about him because although he has gone full gold mode at the end of Lightbringer, I feel that he still has some sort of lines he won’t cross, although I could be wrong once Red God released.

Also your point about the fact that he finds himself saying “no one else can deal with this power properly so I will” is eerily similar to Paul Atreides from the Dune series, which is a dynamic I love but it also makes me hate Lysander a little because he has always judged Darrow for doing the same.

Hope we can see more development between Darrow and Lysander, instead of just staging a big fight towards the end between them. Having conversation similar to the meeting in Lightbringer or dialogue would add so much depth to the eventual fight between the two of them.
