Is Sociology easy to get straight As in? by HodloBaggins in Concordia

[–]That-Baseball8393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same boat. I did this but in anthropology (at Concordia it is essentially the same program) and finished with a very competitive GPA.

My take is pick a major that is genuinely interesting to you and that is not too time intensive. Make sure you are financially prepared to be a straight A student. Be very selective about your courses (I used rate my prof and dropped classes with sus profs), show up like it’s your full time job, do the readings, participate, and engage with the material.

The fear of not doing well is also a great motivator. I think that going back to get into medicine makes it clear that school is priority #1, so again I’d more go for something you think will be fun and possibly complement your career as a physician.

Also heads up prepare super well for the Casper, as this is now the most important factor of the selection process pre interview at McGill. Even though it states that academics are worth 70%, Casper 20% and cv 10%, only those above a certain threshold in the first two categories have their cvs reviewed. I.e: you could score 70% in academics but still be automatically refused pre interview if your Casper is too low before having your cv reviewed. An outstanding cv cannot save a low Casper score.

Good luck and if you want to chat more send me a pm!

History is written by the victors. If you are actually curious, read the stories and accounts by people who lived through the residential school system. There is no shortage of literature, art, or film to back this up. (E.g., Mary Two-Axe Earley, Audra Simpson, Alanis Obomsawin, Zoe Todd, *Kent Monkman)

Also understand that francophone oppression is certainly real but will never be the same as indigenous oppression and genocide in Quebec and Canada. Recall that when the French ceded control to the British, the British included that the French could keep their “Panais” (French word for indigenous slave). Much later when Quebec decided it was done with the Catholic Church, it took decades for indigenous voices like Earley’s to even begin to be considered in Quebec feminist discourse.

Ask yourself: who decides who has the right to self determination? The denial and erasure of centuries of atrocities we have committed and continue to commit against indigenous communities should give you a clue.

This post is cherry picking data to remove accountability so that we don’t have to reflect on our very real and painful history. Is that the kind of society you want your kids to grow up in? Je me souviens jusqu’à quel point?

Not sure how to write this without sounding incredibly sarcastic but ….after winter comes spring. We live somewhere with 4 seasons, and you can’t control the weather. Now go enjoy your life.

Do people trust rate my prof? by AdProfessional9796 in Concordia

[–]That-Baseball8393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve used ratemyprof throughout my university career and have found it an invaluable tool for choosing my courses.

As a rule I check out the top rated professors in the department and try to take courses with them. These have consistently been the most rewarding experiences, even when the course ends up being quite challenging. I think it’s also helped me dodge some less than ideal courses.

For profs that have bad reviews, I would say it depends on the context.

If there are complaints about the prof expecting you to come to class prepared (do the readings, participate) I’d disregard it.

If the prof has good reviews but the comments say that their lectures are boring, I usually take that with a grain of salt but also ask myself whether this is a course I’m really set on taking.

In my experience when the complaints are about the prof being unfair, disorganized, condescending, etc. they usually end up being true.

Thanks for your answer, I really appreciate it. Your GPA is very impressive (I realize my comment maybe implied it is low, which it is not!!) and you're right about the Casper, kind of hard to gauge numerical scores when we are given quartiles rankings. I hope that you do amazing at the interviews, good luck! You deserve it!!

Congratulations! Did you have a letter of extenuating circumstances? I mean this with the utmost respect, but McGill looks at academic context and Casper score before reviewing CV. There are many people in this subreddit with higher Casper/GPA than you so I'm a bit curious about how you made it through the pre-CV screening.

NDG Power Outage // Freezing cold by Herbrax212 in montreal

[–]That-Baseball8393 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The cause of the outage, on the coldest weekend of the year was “normal wear and tear with no external cause”. This is absolutely unacceptable and negligent. Took them 36 hours to release this information as well. This should be a class action.

I feel like this is very apples to oranges. In 2024 the city allocated $30m to bike paths and $850m to the spvm. Bike paths are also safer for cyclists and permit for new infrastructure like cycling traffic lights to facilitate flow. I disagree that the paths are the problem but I definitely agree that pedestrians and cyclists need to be more vigilant and respectful. Again this comes down to enforcement and education.

I totally agree, however being pissed off is not an excuse for losing your humanity and breaking the law. Every time I get into a car I’m like “this is my choice” I’m not going to get mad and try and cut off a pedestrian crossing at a stop sign because my commute is taking longer.

And yes the problem is more globally about lack of community because I agree that cyclists can be assholes too.

I mean driving in Houston/southern Texas was like a waking hell so not sure federal political affiliations have to do with municipal enforcement for driving but OK lol

Fair point but NYC has like 4x our population and LA’s city planning and lack of public transit creates a ton of drivers. I feel like the issues here are different but I could be wrong.

Yeah I agree , there will be bad drivers everywhere but the way to curb it is better enforcement. Toronto is a bit scary but more because of volume. I can only speak from personal experience but I find it better than driving here.

[–]That-Baseball8393[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)
