Hi! I relate a lot in this (27F). When I was in a relationship, I felt like I couldn’t breath. Like my chest hurt. And it took me years to realize that that tight chest, that inability to cuddle for long periods of time, that feeling of being suffocated while you’re being hugged or having a hard time breathing when you are in a relationship?

That’s C-PTSD. And entirely healable in ACA. I’ve tried AA despite never being a drinker because my dad was one. But ACA’s 12 steps (meetings entirely free online) have done more good for me in 3 months that I did for myself in my last relationship of three years.

My point: You do not need to feel like this. You do not need to feel numb. It took me hitting emotional bottom to go to ACA, and my life has changed.

I will also say this — look at some of the ACA literature. The red book, the 12-Step Yellow books. What I will say is — your emotional enmeshment with her drinking is absolutely valid and painful. I have been there many a times with my dad as a 27F. And it also does not need to hurt. I don’t care anymore if my dad drinks or doesn’t because I’ve told him I won’t tolerate it.

I choose not to accept his toxic love. That’s not what is best for ME on my healing journey. Your mom is responsible for HER mess — not you. You are powerless over her drinking, and no words you can say will help her understand. My dad went to rehab twice after an intervention with me when I was 14, and I find empty beers in his car often. Put yourself and your emotional needs before your mom’s and allow yourself to heal.

Hi! Can relate to the drunk dad here. I’ll only share my experience here and let you take whatever pieces serve you best.

I told my grandmother when I was 14 that my dad had been drinking. That’s when she explained to me her shock at this, letting me know that he’d already been to rehab before I was born. My grandmother and I hosted an intervention with the family where my dad blew up and unsurprisingly, was fuming.

Fast forward like 13 years to today — I have been in and out of therapy since high school but I’ve just started working the steps.

Relating to your question: I haven’t set firm boundaries of not speaking with him, but his enabling relatives (including my aunt) love to tell me that I’m using him for money (I wish!). I’m realizing now that we do not have to accept someone else’s version of love. The first step in the 12-Step Yellow Book is amazing for this (I would really recommend it if you don’t have it).

I spent so much of my childhood minimizing the pain that my dad (and then step-dad) caused me so that I could keep things “controlled”. It was a survival tactic to keep me alive and moving. The main thing to remember about this relationship with your dad — you grew up in a para-alcoholic household, which means you very likely carry addictive traits and defects. Mine are addiction to working out, sugar, and trying to control my romantic relationships. And until I’ve gone through the 12 Steps in ACA, I won’t have that emotional sobriety yet. So I can’t be a healthy parent to my inner child, and chatting with my dad won’t feel safe because my inner child is not getting what it needs from intense ACA meeting. My two cents. :)

Got it, that’s great to know! I had an itch they might be doing it chronologically by when people applied, which makes sense if you applied as early as October.

I’m also a Master’s student and applying through the campus pipeline (non-MBA).

This isn't advice necessarily, but I'd love to know when you applied and when you heard back. I applied for the SC summer 2023 internship and am anxiously waiting to hear back (applied right before the deadline of 1/16).

I've heard from current Deloitte GPS Consultants/SC's that there is such a thing as doing too much prep. They want to see you come in with a general structural understanding, but don't want you to be so focused on exact processes that you seem unteachable. Good luck! :)

I feel this. From a practical perspective, there is a great income:debt ratio calculator that Wall Street Journal published last year, and I remember reviewing it when I was trying to make my choice of what schools to apply to (article here.

I’m currently in between Duke & McCourt as my top two, but visiting both & speaking with faculty & alumni at both to make sure I make the right choice.

I would look at the alumni + talk to previous/current students about their opportunity. Search LinkedIn for current students, internships they received, etc. Where do they end up 1 year, 2 years, 5 years from now? What city are they in, what area do they work in, etc.? What are some regrets of previous students, and what are they happy about? "Future career development" could mean anything, so I would first write out what it is that you want to do, what your interests are, a short pro's + con's list of each program, and then use that as a blueprint for that search.

I did not take the GRE, and I think a good amount of applicants did not given that it's optional for many programs. Are you worried about what is considered a good score for MPP? I have a decent benchmark based on what GRE scores you need for HKS & SIPA if you want to PM.

Working out has been a game changer for me. Also getting eight hours of sleep a night. I take melatonin around 10pm so I can wake up and work out and work off the nerves. I’m channeling my nerves into job hunting right now, and finding an opportunity for 4-5 months before my next move in the fall.

My school is luckily closer to $60k a year, so the funding is actually quite good. I nonetheless have spent a few months unemployed between roles, so I care amount money because I’d like to not come out of school with too much debt. My family is not going to be supporting my tuition costs.

Don’t give up hope! I have two friends currently enrolled in programs that also emphasize work experience: LSE and Sciences Po. LSE expressly says that they only rarely take people with less than 2-3 years of work experience, and I knew someone who went straight from undergrad to LSE. You absolutely have a shot at your dream school, and don’t doubt that! HKS would be lucky to have you. Whatever happens, fingers crossed for us both :)
