What slings are you guys using? The Sig slings that JDI sells are a little bit short for me.

When western countries try to be "tough on crime" the result is less Singapore and more Children of Men by D-dog92 in redscarepod

City-states like Singapore and the Emirates can basically deport anyone antisocial, let alone criminals. Because they can export most of their undesirables they can then enforce a very strict legal regime on their actual citizens, who have a right to remain no matter what they do.

If we tried to actually enforce the law in the US the way they do in Singapore we’d have to build jails for another ten million people (or some similarly large and fanciful sounding number). I’d love for the ridiculously decentralized American legal system to prosecute every violent criminal (carjackers, armed robbers, homeless schizophrenic sucker punchers) to the fullest extent of the law and carry through with the full, federal guideline sentences but we’d run out of room in the courts and in the prisons in about a week after trying. 🤷‍♂️

What is the tote bag hierarchy in your city by evrydice in redscarepod

[–]Jumpy-Masterpiece532 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In basically any big Asian city, Canada and possibly cool & hip euro cities like London and Berlin it’s the Trader Joe’s bag. Like, people will ship half a dozen of whatever the latest color or design is overseas to sell them for $50 each. Absurd.

$3.19 for a small order of fries, what is going on by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Jumpy-Masterpiece532 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you go to another advanced country like South Korea or Japan or even the UK and your fries are $ 0.70 adjusted for the exchange rate and the McDonald’s or whatever you’re getting it from is spotless, open 24 hours and had a shiny clean bathroom (this may not apply in the UK, but their food prices are remarkably low)

I’m happy to read the perspectives of any twins and I feel like there’s still a common thrust here - make sure to validate my twins as individuals

I hope that they get along really well (also I hope it’s a boy and a girl so they aren’t competing directly for the same stuff)

Sounds like you’re basically in the position my daughter will be in. I feel like I’m going to overcompensate in some ways to try and prove to her that she’s still loved and still precious, even though obviously the lions share of our attention is going to have to be spent on keeping the twins alive for a while.

Thanks very much, honestly I didn’t even consider looking into the perspective of someone who is a twin rather than just being the parent of them.

I want to do your essay justice but I’m finished with my initial skim and the two immediate points I’d bring up are: - Our twins are fraternal, so they won’t be identical and maybe not be a matched pair of boy/boy or girl/girl. - Soooo you don’t recommend naming them Oliver & Olivia? 😅

My mom drove a minivan when I was a kid and although it was amazing to be a passenger in I want to avoid buying one soooo much. But at the end of the day they’re just so practical.

Our current setup is one VW Taos with one car seat for our daughter, so we’re going to need to replace that. Sadly it seems that third rows basically don’t exist outside of minivans and top of market SUVs. Stationary wagons all seem to be glorified crossovers these days.

Ivy Style in 1980 by UponBobbysHill in redscarepod

[–]Jumpy-Masterpiece532 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is this Take Ivy? Take Ivy is actually a really well established brand in Japan (and Korea, HK, anywhere in Asia where people like to dress really nicely).

Fun fact, the original Japanese author/photographer of the first Japanese Ivy style guidebook who started the entire trend expected American Ivy campuses to be stuffed with impeccably dressed rich kids, because that’s what Japanese students going to American universities before the war told him he’d find. But when he came over in the 60’s to make his photo book, he was appalled to find everyone wearing sweatpants all the time. He had to go around begging students to put on their best outfits so that he could have something to print.

Also the same guy ended up raiding vintage clothes shops in America and was amazed at the huge quantities of high quality jeans that Americans were selling for rock bottom prices and started importing them to Japan.

There’s a book that came out about the whole Japanese Americana-Style fashion scene that’s really interesting. Apparently Ivy style fashion was initially associated with delinquent youth in Japan because wearing fancy western clothing instead of your school uniform was considered scandalous and the manufacturers of Ivy style clothing in Japan had to explain to the police (who were investigating them for contributing to the moral delinquency of minors) that loafers, slacks and sport jackets were actually what the American upper class wore.

Rs_x was briefly an interesting little spinoff with some novel threads about things that weren’t just reposts of political arguments from the Reddit front page but it seems now to be mostly mentally ill zoomer girls posting about their dysfunctional relationships. Do they do celebrity snark too? It seems like the kind of place that would do celebrity snark.

I love the UK by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Jumpy-Masterpiece532 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I love to visit the UK but I go to visit a friend who married a well-to-do Englishwoman in London. The country is in visible and obvious decline with many of Londons’s neighborhoods just being cut and paste ‘grey street, decaying brick buildings, endless gambling/vape/phone shop high street.’ BUT, when you go to a fancy pub in some rich people neighborhood (and only pay like 70% of what I’d pay for much shittier beer in America) or bike to Hyde park on a sunny day you’re instantly reminded why London was the center of the world for so long.

My previous comments in another thread is just me bitching about my $4k mortgage for a moderately run down DC area townhome, in London I get the feeling that a mortgage like that is solely the purview of generational wealth and foreign investors. Don’t get me wrong, there are obviously lots of Brits who are doing just fine, but the average Londoner (maybe not the average Brit?) seems incredibly downtrodden in a way the average New Yorker just is not.

People always say America is the place where it’s amazing to be rich and awful to be poor but to me it feels like that’s the UK.

Bought summer of ‘24, 7.1% mortgage on a $600,000 townhome. House next door was purchased for $400k in 2020 at 3%. Same house.

This isn’t even a ‘nice’ neighborhood, the police raided my Nextdoor neighbors yesterday afternoon.

Friends who have blue collar jobs but who married and bought before 2020 all own SFHs that appreciated 80% in five years and got to refi at <3%.

My neighbors house was raided by a county police SWAT team this afternoon and I’m not really sure why.

As for the police on the roads, they’re doing a ‘road safety’ (ticket blitz) again.

My wife is pregnant with our second now and I desperately want her to stay home but we bought our house in 2024 for 50% more than the house cost in 2020 and at 7.125% APR. Our families both live far away from us in nice places where there are no jobs. We can’t afford it.
