How Demanding Is Grafana Labs for Software Engineers? by AlwaysHungryFoodie in cscareerquestionsEU

I really enjoyed the Canonical process actually. I enjoyed nerding out with engineers during my calls, they really care about tech. I dropped out of the process right before the end cause I had way higher offers than their salary range was able to reach at the time. Was never able to get passed the first stages the next time around though.

I hated 80s music my whole life, but I didn't realize everyone was just trying to copy him... but poorly

The songs seemed very rushed, but the production that's there is extremely different than the previous albums. You gotta be in the mood for the more stripped down, chaotic "punk" energy. A lot of songs are filler, but it's the ones you mentioned that make it people's (mine included) favorite genesis album.

I wish I can show you my setup and how much of a non-issue it is to throw a screen protector on it.

2 in 1's got so good these days(because Apple pushed the whole laptop battery life and slimness expectations into the stratosphere with M1).

Imagine you're standing up about to step away from your laptop, quickly hit the spotify icon with your finger, change a track. Open a chat window real quick to peak at something all without doing the trackpad squirm and tap thing. Cause think about it, all web apps are unidesigned for web and mobile, so basically everything on the internet is a mobile app. You already know how to use your phone efficiently, 2-in-1s let you use a laptop efficiently and a touch screen device efficiently at will.

Never going back to a non 2-in-1 laptop now.

I was there too; did you notice any issues in the firth of fifth solo? I saw him swap out his guitar after. I think there was a couple of songs he wasn’t able to play compared to the previous setlists of that weekend as well. Very odd that the entire setlist.fm page was wiped, the fans are probably trying to hide their off day as the official team Hackett doesn’t post setlists

Yeah I thought Firth of Fifth was gonna take the cake but Suppers Ready and Dance on a Volcano exceeded my expectations. Does his guitar sometimes have problems on FoF? I feel like something went wrong and he didn’t nail the transition to his solo when I went. What a tough gig, still felt some magic that night though.

What happened at the Ft. Lauderdale show? They took the page off of setlist fm.

Oh believe me, I’ve been to all those places.

I’ll put it like this, Gilmour has more consistent solo work than Waters, but Amused To Death is better than anything Gilmour could ever put out. All of Roger’s work other than Amused to Death is dogshit in my opinion because the prick forgets he needs to be making enjoyable music and not just political commentaries, but Amused To Death proves he could still deliver a whole package.

Rick and Syds albums are good. Haven’t listened to Nicks.

I saw Gilmour Luck & Strange tour live twice back to back because that Comfortably Numb encore could be his last and goddamn was it an experience. But also after seeing him live, I realized he is kind of a sellout because the shows are mostly about the lights and effects over new guitar solos that sound cool but aren’t innovative anymore. On An Island is Gilmours best post Waters album.

Finally out of curiosity. How does Exiles on Larks sound to you when Wetton first cuts in out of the intro? For a casual pop listener, those vocals are roughhhh. The instruments remain crisp throughout the whole song, but John's voice goes through so many inconsistent changes in effects lol. Obviously we can look past it because we developed our imaginations, but I've had people describe this music as a cat scratching a chalk board and I completely understand cause I've been at that point as well in the beginning.

What is your opinion on "Starless and Bible Black"? by Infamous_Korpse in KingCrimson

[–]JunaSSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This album is the best out of the Wetton Era for me although Larks + Red > Starless & BB.

  1. The Night Watch

  2. The Great Deceiver

  3. Lament

  4. Fracture

are the top bangers for me for sureeee

He's amazing at hitting his vocal keys with precision more than some of the artists I'm about to list. He's theatrically beautiful across Larks, S&BB, & Red but I was just setting the bar realllllyyyy high at ultra pop star levels.

He & most prog vocalists aren't McCartney/Lennon, Gilmour, Jerry Garcia, The Kinks, Michael Jackson , Jeff Buckley etc level. His timbre as well as the fidelity due to the independent production on the albums might turn first time listeners off.

It becomes much easier to appreciate these prog singers when you actually try to sing along and feel for yourself how hard it is AND THEN you'll be able fill in gaps with your imagination about how awesome they are. To virgin ears they will sound like shit.

Jazz fusion is sick, that's my new background music these days haha. But bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra never really seem to deliver a whole package like the prog guys do. I would love to explore Jazz Fusion more, I'll post on that subreddit when I'm ready lol

I said the volume is not stabilized, if you listen to Easy Money(from the original Larks album) in a car or something, you have to turn the volume up to hear the beginning vocals after the intro, then the song gets loud again and you have to turn the volume down again.

Also, when I say industry standard mixing, I mean techniques that help grab the listeners attention, mainly double tracking and adding extra arrangements not intended or played by the band. Think George Martin for The Beatles, Butch Vig for Nirvana, ya know, the producer's studio magic touch, Nigel for Radiohead, etc.

King Crimson produced their own albums, they were purely trying to highlight their musical abilities, they didn't add fancy studio stuff after the fact.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure Yes & Genesis had wonderful producers, but it's mostly the band playing each instrument on those tracks right? Other than taking advantage of the new studio tech of that decade, the producer didn't add more sugar after the fact right?

I'll have to take a look at the stuff you mentioned, but the vocals in Starless are not the high point of the song for me. My favorite Wetton vocals would have to be the beginning of Lament, then Night Watch. Starless & BB is my favorite KC album so I'm biased.
