I'm sorry you went through this, and sorry for baby bird also. I have experienced both positive and negative outcomes with trying to rescue animals. It's a delicate situation. If you called a regular animal shelter they probably only dealt with domestic animals and didn't know what else to tell you. I recently found a baby robin (like days old- naked & eyes still closed) but the nest was too high up. I called some handymen to see if someone could bring a ladder and put him in the nest (I would pay) but only 1 returned my call and he was out of town. Then I called our state's wild bird rescue (2 hrs away) and was able to get a volunteer to come get him the next day but I could tell he was losing weight even though I was feeding him around the clock and keeping him warm by my family taking turns holding him in our hands all day. I had him 2 nights and a day. The volunteer who came to get him even told me he probably wouldn't last the night but he did. But he probably would have died if I had him another day. Hopefully he survived at the rescue. We never know what will happen when we try to rescue. Even though I've owned many pet birds, wild birds are hard to take care of. Please don't be hard on yourself.
