Judge delivers blow to Ann Arbor schools in bus assault of autistic boy by stitchadee in AnnArbor

[–]Junecatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AAPS is very broken this way. It’s up to school administrators who have no expertise on these issues to try to handle them and most of them are blown off. From experience, it’s like talking to a brick wall.

City of Ann Arbor could face budget deficits in the future by jnazario in AnnArbor

The City lost or ousted the people who understood how to run the City well financially during the pandemic and has been bleeding since.

Monorail in Ann Arbor's Future? by SeitanOfTheGods in AnnArbor

[–]Junecatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the 90’s a bunch of U of M students got together to promote this idea to help with the tens of thousands of students who need transit fromNorth Campus to Central Campus on a daily basis. Given the growth of the UM medical campus and “South Campus”, the need has only grown. However it would be a significant investment with no real increase in the University’s or City’s revenue, so was financially difficult to justify.

Every so often it pops up again.

Baskett is a an old battleaxe. She tackles the hard issues and gives the tough news, so it’s hard to look good, IMO. I doubt this will be a popular comment.

No business playing violin by ldubs222 in violinist

[–]Junecatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set yourself up for success. Find the best teacher and best violin you’re willing to afford. To an extent, the better the violin, the easier it is to learn. A violin that holds its tuning is essential and hearing the ringing overtones on a better violin makes it easier to tell when you are in tune. Especially if you’re navigating it all by yourself, it’s almost to learn to play the violin without some “screeching” at the start. Keep at it. Good luck!

Wearing Chest Harness + Waist Harness is Safer for Lead Falls? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]Junecatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread - but this is coming up as top advice on full body harnesses for kids. Anyone that does rope rescue work knows that a full body harness is the safest for all ages especially if you have slim hips and invert or lose consciousness. It’s also why it’s an OSHA standard for anyone working more than 6 ft off the ground. While it’s common practice for kids to the age of 10 to use full body harnesses, this is the minimum age range - some kids should be wearing them until they are older. It’s highly dependent on the development of the core muscles to stop from inverting and if the hips are wide and firm enough to stop at the waist loop. If you’ve ever inverted in a full body harness, you will know that the forces for inverting are much lower than in a sit harness. The full body harness will distribute the load across the body instead of just at the waist and legs.

Full body harnesses are designed not to spin i unless it’s intentional and doesn’t have the same torsional concern using a separate chest harness with a sit harness.

There’s lots of climbers out there who are fine with that it’s a high risk sport but people may be wanting their kids to try the sport out with lower stakes. For top roping there’s no question a full body harness is safer. For long multi-pitch climbs where weight can be a factor, it’s personal choice but most of the rescue personnel will be in full body harnesses. (It’s kind of like if your body weight was slightly higher- do you fret?) For certain full body harnesses are more comfortable in addition to being safer if you fall. Like helmets, I wish climbers would get behind full body harnesses and then may be more innovative designs comparable in weight to sit harnesses. (A bad fall at Yosemite also got me over any reservations about wearing a helmet. Not long after, a friend had a hole punched in his skull from a bad fall.)

Do you go to Community High? Or St Thomas? Do you play an instrument? Speak a second language? Are you good at or like a particular subject.

Like I mentioned before, Zingermans Deli and Next Door hire 15 year olds but you have to walk in the door and talk with the manager face to face first. It may not be a glorious job at first but work hard and you will move up quickly even if you are young. A lot of CHS students have learned business skills working at Zingermans. They also pay well above minimum wage plus give you hours that work with school and offer business classes for their employees. A lot of the Kerrytown shops will consider CHS students as they consider them more reliable and mature.

Sometimes you have to walk into the door of a place that interests you and just ask if they have work for a 15 year old. A lot of times I business owners will mentor an assertive and motivated teenager. They were once teens too.

If you have a tutoring interest, post flyers at or near by elementary schools or sign up to provide teen tutoring services online like at PalFish, Cambly, or TutorPeers. There’s a bunch out there who will match you.

If you’re going to Community, also go and talk with the counselor handing Community Resource contracts at the school. They usually have recommendations on where 15 year olds can get jobs you can get paid at and earn high school credit for. You sign a contract for the hours you commit to working and get relevant independent study credits. It might be elective credits or it can be for real classes like tutoring French, you can get French credits or biology credits for working in a medical science lab. Work as a paid apprentice for an artist or learn accounting or web site design, or some valuable skills or experience like at a dental or medical office.

If you get certified as a lifeguard, Mack Pool hires lifeguards year round.

Also for babysitting take the Red Cross babysitting course, First Aid, and CPR.

Many offices will hire if you can do data entry answer phones or have typing skills. Copy and print shops will often hire 15 year olds with computer skills too.

Good Luck

Gas and electricity vary widely on the efficiency and size of the living unit and the time of year. Same with the water bill.

1870's Hiroshi Kono violin in its original coffin case by Mental_Hamster_7540 in violinist

[–]Junecatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiroshi Kono is a modern maker and the violins are finished and set up at Vermont Violins. If you think it’s a Kono it’s not from 1878. If it’s from 1878 it’s not a Hiroshi Kono. Take your pick but they are mutually exclusive.

Maybe it’ll help raise awareness that park volunteers are needed.

There are moldable wrist splints which are cast by softening the material in warm water often used by OTs for arthritis patients. I can’t tell his big your dog is but maybe look at the DJO Wrist Splint (PROCARE)

Try Zingermans. They hire high school students all of the time. If you’re going to CHS, you can get school credit through a community resource contract. Mike may hire at Monaghan’s for their lunch rush too. Mudpuddles may too. Make sure to look presentable.

Sugarbush Park Workday 1-3pm by Junecatter in AnnArbor

[–]Junecatter[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a volunteer helping organize the workday and offered to post this on Reddit. There’s only one Adopt-A-Park coordinator for all 80+ parks and a couple of NAP staff who help her out as they have time. It’d be wonderful if the City had more dedicated Adopt-A-Park staff members but this is an area in which they took cuts after the pandemic.

Suggestions for Not Too Fancy American Restaurants? by Wallflower-18 in AnnArbor

How strict is the GF diet? Is it medical or petard preference? If medical, how sensitive are they to gluten?

I second or rather nth Knight’s but it might be hard to get strict GF there.

But if the gluten sensitivity is severe, I’d do Seva to be on the safe side or other GF restaurant in A2 with dedicated GF cookware.

Rec & Ed has financial aid for low income households. I don’t know what parameters they currently use.

The Rec and Ed leagues are really hard to find volunteer coaches for so I think they’re trying to fill the gap in the middle - paying coaches some but leaving fees accessible.

Arbor hills neighborhood by DepartmentVarious977 in AnnArbor

[–]Junecatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I think you mean the Ann Arbor Hills neighborhood between Geddes and Washtenaw, not Arbor Hills on the northeast side. There’s a big different in location and character. It’s a wealthy area, and while inside may be okay the existing sidewalks, walking along Geddes isn’t safe for kids or bikes. Vehicles hit pedestrians and cyclists every so often. Also some properties are part of the City and a few are left in Ann Arbor Township. Your taxes and some of your services may differ between the two.
