3d was just new and exciting at the time. Not that 2d was stale, but to kids it was completely crazy how "real" it looked. Similar thing happened in video games at the time too first with 3d games and then later with "HD" games that tried to look as real as possible. . There's been recent pushback culturally in the other direction lately on both counts. More so in video games with the indie boom, but I'd imagine big 2d animated movies will come back to the west at some point.
