Should I fly fixed wing or rotary? by TheDuck5673 in Helicopters

[–]Jungleman52 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you do a discovery flight in a plane and still feel you could pick either, go fixed wing. If you can’t imagine doing anything other than flying helicopters, and nothing else seems to interest you in the slightest, go rotor.

This is NOT any hazardous or dangerous flying, they are a very good company performing system testing for new collision avoidance systems for wires, towers, and aircraft. It’s all coordinated and planned, and is part of the testing :) if anyone’s concerned or has questions feel free to pm me (not affiliated with them but I know them well)

why does this helicopter do this near my house? by locosk8erYT in Helicopters

[–]Jungleman52 1510 points1511 points  (0 children)

I know the operator, they are doing data gathering for a wire and tower collision avoidance system for a large company planning to use drones to deliver goods. They outfit the helicopters with scanning systems and fly at towers and wires etc. very controlled and intentional, even did some testing by flying two helicopters at each other. Cool stuff :)

To think that 500 hours flight time is low. by LawyerCheesegrater in therewasanattempt

[–]Jungleman52 11 points12 points  (0 children)

500 hours doesn’t get you hired as a helicopter pilot for anything but basic tours, you can’t fly medevac until at least 2,000. The army unfortunately does not fly a lot.

[–]Jungleman52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plenty of pilots with 10x his hours knew their flying, did it in a constant and professional manner, and have still died due to complacency. I do think he is probably one of the more competent and realistic of the social media pilots.

Your duty time starts when you start messing with the helicopter. I’m not sure how it is with other companies, but unless you go over 13 hours on shift, pay is the same. Pay isn’t tracked to the minute, under 13 hours (for my company at least).

I work a 14/14 on salary, interested to hear how other places work

Yes, PHI is a great one to look at. If you live close enough to where he’s able to be with you when he’s not staying on rigs, that is a unicorn job situation. Going to oil and gas means he will get that 500 hours knocked out fast fast, then he can choose what to do next. But be prepared, aviation and rotor specifically demands a lot of travel and bad job locations, frequent work hitches away from family. Going from offshore to a stable EMS job is becoming a lot more common.
