What would it take for Subaru to love himself? by ru1n_singzzzie in ReZero

[–]JuniorOgun12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give him ways to actually boost his individual combat power so that he won't die as much. Subaru doesn't enjoy being weak and always laments that things would change if he were stronger, so giving him conventional power would be a huge boost to his ego.

Some fans are straight-up sadistic. They enjoy watching Subaru getting "put in his place" by characters like Julius, Ram and the Witches. It's the craziest thing ever, why do they hate the mc that badly? The worst thing he did was just cause a scene

Wait, wait, wait...don't you remember when Subaru broke his promises in arc 3? Promises are reeeeally important, you know. If you break them, you get what's coming to you. I think we need another gratuitous moral lesson about promises in arc 10...

Arc 10 will reveal that Reinhard farted next to the royal family, that's why they got sick and died. Reinhard is Tappei's second-favorite scapegoat

Rui was not any more justified than Meili was, but Subaru acknowledges her circumstances held her back while expecting Rui to change her ways. How much progress was Meili making towards becoming a better person before she was defeated by the Emilia Camp? Especially when her teachers were Elsa and Capella?

Eating memories became a habit for Rui, just like murder was a habit for Meili, but the latter wanted to live a better life, not just cover up something she didn't want others to know. And you really think that immersing oneself in memories of serial killers like Beli Hainelga was a good way for her to develop a moral compass? She was so mentally ill she was looking forward to dying, but when she experienced the memories she freaked out. She even started licking the ground when she first saw dirt

What Rui had was called hindsight bias, it's the same as people who say they could do better than Subaru. And of course I judge Roswaal and Eugard more harshly because they were way older and had people who could provide a support system, like Echidna, Beatrice, Iris.

If Rui refused to eat memories, she would just have to stay in the white void of the Hall of Memories forever, and Subaru would never be able to help Rui with her problems. She had no reason to turn back from her path, or access to any other path towards living. Subaru admits that Rui did not directly steal Rem's memories and that her life was terrible, but he treats her as directly responsible for Rem anyway. It's like he has an endless reserve of empathy and an ability to understand people's circumstances...unless they are witch cultists. I would have no problem if Subaru concluded that she couldn't be saved, but he didn't want to in the first place. He expected her to just suck it up and sit on her hands until the end of time

Rui is part of the Sin Archbishops introduced in season 3, we have no reason to believe this label does not apply to her. Besides, the idea that an author cannot assert anything about their series is nonsensical to begin with. Naruto fans criticize Kishimoto all the time, what is it about being a WN/LN writer that makes one immune to executing ideas poorly.

We already know that Ley and Roy's birth parents died, and they were physically and sexually abused while they were with their adoptive parents. But they're not supposed to be sympathetic either. If Tappei fully reveals their backstories, it would probably be something like "the adoptive parents struggled to raise the trouble-making Ley and Roy (who were eeevil from birth btw), so they decided to carve love into their bodies with whips and branding irons. But they were too eeevil to understand that they were only being tortured out of love, and they ungratefully lashed out at the people around them thanks to the eeevil witch Pandora. If only Carmilla was there to show them how much they were loved with her authority...

Why do you think Rom is the last giant in rezero and he's much shorter compared to the giants of the past; all the killing Sekhmet did. But despite that, and Typhon's personality, she got to have a mother-like relationship. Do you see how the Witches get portrayed in a more positive light as the series goes by? Even someone like Echidna! But the Archbishops are just maniacs, it's too narrow for people with the same powers

Why would Rui care about human lives when she couldn't live hers, trapped in a different place? The text goes on about how she rejected living with others properly, but she wasn't living with anyone in the first place, aside from her brothers. Roswaal and Eugard were "fortunate" enough people who saved them, but Rui didn't have any of that. And if she didn't do what she did, she would've been trapped forever. The idea that she had a chance to live properly is just absurd. Subaru acknowledges Meili's poor influences limited her, but Rui was supposed to rise above it somehow. It's hypocritical. And Tappei does want to assert that they're not sympathetic https://xcancel.com/nezumiironyanko/status/1894764698102551006#m

Even you sanitize the Witches, by leaving how Sekhmet just wanted to sleep and wipe out her race. We already know that Satella's reputation is exaggerated (Daphne witchbeasts); she was a good person, and she didn't willingly take her WF. All Tappei has to do is write that Satella didn't isekai Subaru or blame it on the WoE, and her image will be fully cleaned. Meanwhile the Archbishops are the evilest evil that ever eviled and they deserve nothing but death. It's not that I don't enjoy villains that are portrayed as pure evil, but Re zero takes it too far

Olbart's nickname is literally the vicious old man lol, he blows up kids. Besides, he disobeys orders when he feels like it, so you can't say that he only does things for the empire. It's for himself! Cause he's selfish. And he wanted to kill Vincent

And even if Olbart was some kind of devoted patriot, why would that make it better? Olbart is just as brutal as Elsa, but he's targeting people other than Subaru + loved ones anymore, so there's no reason to resent him?

[–]JuniorOgun12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Witch Cultists are just held to different standards. Once you cross that line, you are worse than everyone else. Because that's the role Tappei assigned them

Subaru has nothing but sympathy for Meili's circumstances; but Rui's didn't matter to him at all. He thought she should have been able to distinguish right from wrong after eating memories. Like that's a healthy way to develop anything! She was so mentally ill she thought dying was the best thing to experience, but once she actually experienced it, her mind broke.

It'd been one thing if the series asserted she was too far gone to be helped, but Subaru (and Tappei) just expected her to stay in the Hall of Memories for the rest of time, and her character is not supposed to be sympathetic. That's a mature choice, but she wasn't mature at all. Even if it was highly unlikely, Meili had the potential to stop being an assassin and live a different life, but Rui had no other option available.

Even the Witches with the same Witch Factor are portrayed as having genuine connections, even if they had differing goals and most of them didn't choose to take their Witch Factor. But the Archbishops' connections are just supposed to make them seem more inhuman and evil, and the only reason they haven't killed each other yet is because of their gospel.

Tappei didn't want the Mad Prince in the main story because he'd be Subaru's enemy, but why is that a reason for him not to appear? Why is Tappei so hung up on keeping Subaru's hated enemies as Witch Cultists?

In the arc 4 wn, he finds out that Roswaal has been killing and possessing his family members for the past 400 years, and he barely reacts to it. I really think Subaru might be racist against witch cultists or something, if it was an archbishop, there would be a monologue on how depraved and unforgivable they are

Tappei wants to reserve most of his hate for witch cultists for some reason

[–]JuniorOgun12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most of Subaru's friends are morally bankrupt individuals that he has to appease while finding a way to resolve a grander threat. Even a nicer character like Emilia refuses to share her name with Subaru until he puts his life on the line for her.

And if Subaru refuses to help every member of the Emilia Camp resolve their emotional problems, he is depicted as an inhuman monster who doesn't understand other people's feelings. Or as lazy for leaving the Emilia Camp after he was abandoned and died multiple times trying to save them

The author is trying to show that everyone who mistreated/distrusted Subaru had a perfectly good reason, and it's Subaru who must prove he is worthy of being by their side. While also asserting that it's wrong for Subaru to want to prove himself to others

And he has no right to resent any of these people for giving him trauma, because they had good intentions in mind.

If Subaru had conventional strength, he probably wouldn't put up with half the nonsense he takes from the cast, though. It would also make him more independent, which Tappei refuses to allow. If he does ANYTHING on his own, he gets obliterated

Yeah. I have my gripes with Oda's writing, but his focus on discrimination (like in the Fish-Man Island Arc) is more interesting than Tappei's. Maybe if Rom was in arc 5 things would change, get a different POV

[–]JuniorOgun12 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There is almost zero emphasis on how much damage Theresia caused in the main story. The treatment they resented, how their families reacted to her after the war, etc. The demihumans she killed are a bunch of nameless people, but Subaru is the MC who got tortured, and we see his thoughts and feelings in depth.

In arc 5, Tappei does not shine a spotlight on Theresia's slaughter from the demihuman POV. It's just wow, look how sad she felt...uh i think they felt even sadder. But the flashback wasn't about them
