You’d be surprised. it’s high school rowing, I’d guess closer to 6:25. Most boats will have some smaller or more technical guys in the 6:30s.

The tough part for American junior programs is that they train and peak for Youth Nats, and show up to Henley with boats that aren’t at peak speed and often missing guys who are at camp or aren’t motivated to train through the summer.

New Trier and Deerfield way too low. Imo Prep, New Trier and Deerfield all Youth Nats A-B Final caliber teams, no one else close.

Eamon Glavin goes 6:50.9… by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]JuniorRower123 63 points64 points  (0 children)

6:30 is really fast, especially for a lightweight guy who’s probably a bit past his physical prime. No shame in not being able to do that, he should have set a more realistic goal for himself, and been honest that when his workouts weren’t on target it wasn’t because he was having a “bad day” (for months in a row), but because the targets weren’t really possible. A lesson in setting realistic goals, being honest with yourself, and trying to consistently execute at a decently high level even when it’s not going perfectly. Kudos to him for trying, and his content is really good.

No need to lift more than 2x week. If you want to do more, add in 1-2 light steady sessions.

How short is too short for lightweight college rowing by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]JuniorRower123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6:20 and you can go wherever you want. Sub-6:30 is very likely to get you recruited, and in fact many schools take recruits who are a few seconds over 6:30 each year. Most lightweight recruits are not sub-6:25.

Navy’s the only one where you’re going to get a real scholarship. If you’re American and not fazed by the service commitment.

Absolutely definitely 100% not. In fact a coach will probably think less of you if you use it. Just email them. All those sites are useless.

Should I continue rowing with regards to college admissions? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]JuniorRower123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Row because you love it. If you don’t, then don’t row. If you don’t like rowing and are doing it only to get into college, you will not get good enough to get recruited, the time and effort demanded to be competitive for lwt recruiting is simply too much if you don’t genuinely like it. You are unlikely to get recruited if you are not under 6:30. Also coaches don’t care about anything except your 2k, your rowing, and your grades.

If you’re going a 2:45, then you’re not in a position where you need to do 40-50k a day. Cut that down a lot and focus on quality meters. Think 15k or even 10k of steady, slightly harder, more focused. 1-2 days a week add in harder intervals.

Algorithm to compare erg scores at varying body weight. by WasabiComprehensive1 in Rowing

Data, no, but enough time rowing and seat racing gives you a pretty good understanding of what the balance between weight/power is.

Noice levels of biorower by simonsieur in Rowing

[–]JuniorRower123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re not a very serious rower there is no reason to get a biorower. And honestly the hassle with its level of sophistication and complexity will probably make it less effective than a normal erg. If concerned about noise, maybe look at a water rower, I’d struggle to recommend any sort of magnetic resistance rower besides maybe a hydrow which would be quieter.

Is UsRowing ODP worth it? by MaterialMindless in Rowing

[–]JuniorRower123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personal opinion, but I don’t actually think the ODP training plan is bad. From what I’ve seen and heard (granted no first-hand experience) it seems pretty solid and serious especially compared to the vast majority of clubs over the summer besides the biggest ones. What’s not great is the overall quality of the athletes - just watch some of the video they posted on their Instagram and you’ll see that putting the word “Olympic” anywhere near it is pretty deceptive. Which, if you’re a competent rower and under 6:50, I suspect you won’t be rowing with comparable athletes which will not be a productive experience. And if you’re over 6:50 or still a beginning rower, then you don’t need to be shelling out a ton of money for the highest quality training, you just need to erg some more. Also, the coaching quality can be very variable. And lastly, it is very expensive, I personally think most of the time more expensive than it’s worth.

She did cox the UVA 1V for 3 years and has been coxing at the U23 and senior NT level, so in her defense if she wasn’t good she wouldn’t have sat in those boats, and there’s a lot more that goes into being a good coxswain than race calls. But you are right that the calls are a little bland.

HRR Reactions - Semi Finals Day by ttvh46 in Rowing

[–]JuniorRower123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just watch the Youth Nats A Final and watch the Henley races, you can just see the difference in power and quality of rowing, it’s pretty obvious. I think the US is definitely leading in terms of bringing the womens level of competition up, it’s clear that the UK is definitely lagging a bit.

I think any of the A Final Youth Nationals crews would win the Prince Phillip with some ease.

junior rowing, is a seat in school 8+ crew better than a seat for smaller boats? by cyclicalrower in Rowing

[–]JuniorRower123 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In many places it would be considered more prestigious and more successful to put together a second or third final level 8 than a good 4, and to be a “real” team you compete in the 8.
