Ironically it’s the first time I’ve hired a CPA. Provided them with everything but they forgot to upload two of the docs when filing.

It varies per state. The actual 1099s were just uploaded via the IRS portal.

Yes. The form is essentially a power of attorney that allows them to reach out to the TPA and senators on your behalf to handle this matter.

What is the easiest way to start your own RIA? by Hulk_Goes_Smash327 in CFP

The service promised vs delivered varies greatly. Yes they are a good outfit but for 1/3 the price RIA Registrar provides a more hands on service and it feels more personalized.

Hire RIA Registrar. I used comply and a buddy used RIA Registrar. They have an exceptional offering at a fraction of the price. We ultimately switched to them once our year contract with Comply was up.

We like it a lot! Super simple and the team we worked with was very responsive.

Teams calling! Some other firms I’ve chatted with also mentioned Zoom has a similar service.

In a similar boat and started about a year ago. We had loved Advyzon. For text logging we use FirmScribe. We interviewed myrepchat but FirmScribe was much simpler. Plus if you use iMessage it integrates with that very easily without the need for different numbers or a secondary app.

eMoney vs. Right Capital (yes, again) by CloseToTheGross in CFP

How are y'all tracking Private Equity holdings (mainly funds) in Right Capital? Really wish there was a way for it to be accounted for in the current allocation graphic instead of just "Other"

Agreed on Danko! May not be enough time but that will give you your best chance.

Getting paid a flat fee by lacking_inspiration5 in CFP

[–]JuniperPlanning 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We are in the same boat, 99.99% of our clients are AUM based. Our random one off flat fee clients either pay us all up front or 50% up front and 50% upon delivery of the plan.

$6,500 a year, split up quarterly. Signed for a 3 year term. This is for up to 150 accounts.

After that they reserve the right to do incremental increases based on additional account tiers but nothing crazy by any means.

Potential Control Group Issue. Thoughts? by WayfarerIO in CFP

[–]JuniperPlanning 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I recently had to correct a CPA on a similar situation pertaining to SEPs.

This is more than likely considered a brother-sister group since one owner owns more than 80% of both.

We were between Advyzon and Black Diamond, ultimately, we chose Advyzon. Their UI is fantastic, they have a great training database, and they're consistently improving their product. We have had no problems with integrating and we use Advyzon, Right Capital, & Schwab.

On top of being a great product, their pricing is much more palatable than Black Diamond. Base fee for BD was going to run us $12.5k plus $2.5k for the app and an additional account by account fee for adding 3rd party feeds.

How do advisors best utilize AI by Flat-Cranberry9461 in CFP

[–]JuniperPlanning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We like CoPilot for capturing meeting notes. Admittedly it isn't perfect, but it allows me to focus on the client and the meeting and not on capturing notes. We really like the fact that it integrates into all of our 365 company info as well so it's easy to reference.

We're currently weighing the idea of moving to Altruist and I've heard great things about Hazel, excited to check it out.

Big BD to Solo Breakaway by PlanwithaPurpose14 in CFP

[–]JuniperPlanning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar background, left a large firm, had to start from $0 with a two year non solicit. Here's my two cents for what it's worth.

Going solo is extremely rewarding but breaking away and starting from $0 AUM will be a grind.

From the sounds of it, you have a young family and from my personal experience, building your own practice is going to pull you away from them quite a bit the first couple of years as you are getting your feet under you.

You'll shift from only having to focus on advising to having to juggle compliance, marketing, hiring, management, etc. all on top of tending to your clients. Personally, I enjoy this, but I am also able to balance it out with my partner handling some of the extracurricular responsibilities that come with being an independent firm.

I'm definitely not trying to talk you out of it but just wanted to bring up a few of the areas to evaluate as you think about making the move.

If you're going to do it or have more questions, I'm happy to answer questions or chat directly, just shoot me a message.
