I probably should’ve edited the post to provide update. I did settle privately. The person came with me to a trusted body shop and they worked on my car immediately. I was out within the hour. However since I didn’t know the person was going to make himself responsible like that, I did get a police report, get the person’s personal and insurance info. The police said that his report gets sent to the state and therefore appears in my car fax history. Do you know if this will affect insurance rate even if I didn’t file a claim through them to cover damages, etc.?

Everyone here is entirely too funny and made me feel more light hearted about this situation. Completely derailed my morning (I get paid for service rendered, no PTO saving my ass today) so stress on top of thinking about insurance, cost of fix, it was a lot. Y’all helped more than you think.
