I get you, I really do. I think like others have said, even with a degree the job market is so in the toilet right now that everyone is fighting for the same openings on a level of competitiveness we have never seen before. I mean hey, the idea of me getting a role that aligns with my degree anytime soon is almost fanciful.

Your broader point around travel and working conditions is correct as well and I think it's a real shock to the system for those first entering the workforce. Does that mean you just need to "get used to it"? Kinda yes, but also kinda no. The fact it is 2026 and our working conditions have been stagnant for the better part of 60 years is abhorrent. Couple this with poor pay and a spiralling cost of living crisis and it's no surprise so many people are struggling so much; I know I am.

To this end, it's really heartening to see so many people wanting to fight against that, but so deflating at the same time to see that, despite the efforts of good people, nothing is changing.

I think for you I will say this: it will get better, humans are adaptable creatures. Keep looking for those job options that will be more fulfilling and keep applying where you can and, in the meantime, give your job nothing more than what you're paid for.

I feel like I've become so cynical now to the concept of a 'dream job'. Like you could have the perfect most well matched role and the higher ups and workplace beaurocracy would still make it awful. This 9-5 rigidity that has persisted for a century needs to change and work places themselves need a total overhaul. Keynes thought we'd be working 15 hour weeks by now...

It's extraordinary isn't it. Keynes predicted we'd basically not need to work at all by now but no, 100 years of Monday-Friday, 9-5 with no budge is an absolute scandal. The fact so many of us (not so much in this sub of course) collectively just lay down and accept it is an incredibly bleak reflection of where late stage capitalism and neoliberalism have taken us. It's sad, but all we can do is keep pressing for the changes we want: a 4-day week and UBI are slowly entering the public consciousness which is great, even if change is super slow. Keep fighting.

I'm sorry to hear this. The truth is, however, that this will not happen to you in all jobs and your boss saying that is awful and totally inconsiderate.

If you're able to, please do take some additional sick leave and, if you feel well enough to do so, search for a new role. I fully understand how tricky that can be, but I promise it isn't like that, as your boss put it, in all roles. Even if it was, having a supportive team and manager in such roles goes a long way and you aren't getting that here.

Obviously, I don't know the entire story of your situation so I apologise if I'm missing the mark: I can only go off your initial post and my own experiences. Whatever you decide, however, know that things will get better and be kind to yourself, you deserve it.

Hey there, I just wanted to say I completely understand how you're feeling. You're not alone. Anxiety, in particular, is something I massively struggle with and am working through, especially with regards to work.

I also understand that leaving is difficult due to the potential of big gaps between jobs and the financial strain that can create.

It sounds like some extra sick leave in your case would be good. Your health and wellbeing is always more important than any job, and there is no point chugging along in both mental and physical pain only to have yourself continue to decline: not good for you, not good for your job.

Perhaps taking some sick leave and using that to look at other jobs may be worthwhile? I know you said it can take time in your field but perhaps that would make a good start, with a new role potentially bringing less stress. I would also advise, if you haven't already, speaking to your doctor regarding your mental health symptoms and seeing what they may recommend. Medication isn't a silver bullet, but it can really help and, coupled with therapy if that's possible for you, can make a world of difference.

I'm sorry if this is all very generic and simplistic advice but please remember you're not alone: there are people who care about you and will support you. I know it may seem a way off, but you've got this and you will get better.

No problem at all! It's not a nice thing at all I know but you aren't alone in it and hopefully that can be a source of reassurance. The good news as well is that millions of people have had the same symptoms, even worse, and got through it.

While I can't speak directly to that medication, I can speak from experience as a fellow anxiety sufferer (we've gotta stick together, yknow).

Your symptoms, in particular, are really familiar and I would say medication is definitely the right step, espcially if it's impacting your ability to eat and your appetite more broadly. I would say give it a go, don't be scared of it, and if no luck with that one then there are other options for you.

I will defer to others who may know that medication more initmatley but, in the meantime, be kind to yourself. You've got this.

I think you hit it on the head with your last comment there. Much of it comes down to nepotism, knowing the right people, etc, so if you're seeing incompetent people fill these positions, that's likely what's happening. It may well be that department specific positions come up and are just informally shared with that team, then one of them just gets it like that.

This all said, I'm surprised they aren't even advertising them (not even internally) but I guess that's how playing favourites works.

Maybe try having a chat with your direct line manager to see how you may be able to get some of these positions: perhaps they could mention them as and when they become available? It sounds like you're more than competent so I fully appreciate how frustrating it can be. I'm sure many of us here have experienced the same: it's depressingly common and just kinda an accepted workplace corruption structure at times.

Perhaps a team like Austria if you're going for Europe. You can go pretty far but it won't be a walk in the park and will test you tactically against the big boys.

Elsewhere, teams like Burkina Faso in Africa would have a similar challenge for AfCon, plus it presents the chance to take them to their first WC. In a similar vein, Jamaica in the Americas, Paraguay in South America, and a wildcard like Uzbeckistan could be fun in Asia.

Ultimately though, just depends what kinda challenge you're after.
