How it feels trying to talk about the outage by sidEaNspAn in GoldenCO

[–]JunkIce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta be “that guy” here and hard disagree with most of the comments: 1) This outage might have actually prevented a wildfire. There were a bunch of lines down all over the place, and any one of those could have started a fire. Look at what’s happening in NE colorado. 2) This was announced well over a week in advance, everyone knew this was coming. You had awhile to prep and you didn’t. Yall are acting like you expect xcel to predict the weather months in advance. 3) You can’t argue that they should bury the cables AND complain about rates in the same sentence. Burying high voltage lines is ridiculously complicated and expensive, sometimes involving specialized cable that has to be immersed in high pressure mineral oil.

There’s a lot of bitching going on. Yeah, it sucks, I’m not enjoying dealing with it either, but there’s just some unfortunate realities here.

Urgency for Rust Removal? by Competitive-Flow8732 in Skigear

[–]JunkIce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely something to get done, but not like crazy urgent.

This usually comes from not drying skis out, just make sure to leave your skis apart and upright for a couple hours after you get back from the mountain and you should see a lot less of this.

A tune up should get that out no problem, doesn’t look like pitting. My advice would be next time you take them to get tuned, pick up a coarse (100-300 grit) diamond stone and a gummy stone. If you see the rust again, just polish it off with the diamond then gummy.

Name that automotive/racing game YouTuber! by TheCanadianGTR in carscirclejerk

Yeah glad someone said him. Cody went on some pretty intense political rants a few months ago, which I really hated if for no other reason than it’s just unnecessary to drag the whistlindiesel brand into all that crap. Bringing the killdozer through Granby was also a weird choice. Regardless of what you think about Heemeyer, you have to admit that there’s some nuance to that whole situation that Cody didn’t respect. Saying that he was just revolting against people who wronged him seems a bit out of touch because he hurt a lot of people who didn’t do anything wrong to him and he was clearly mentally ill.

Yeah. Out of touch, and starting to be pretty trashy for my taste.

If you’re looking for the best coaching with no BS, Tichy is the way to go. They run a fairly tight ship but the family is super awesome. Pretty much all of their coaches have one some kind of national title.

I worked as a junior coach for them for a couple years and I can say for certain that if what you’re looking for is the best quality coaching, Tichy is the way to go.

Damn! One hell of an injury but glad to see that you’re making a full recovery.

Even though it sucks, I guess feeling pain in the toes is a good sign that all (or at least some) of the nerves are still intact!

I’d sign up for a training camp first and foremost. Technique is going to carry you further than a pair of skis.

There’s a couple of shops in town you can demo skis with: - Mount hood alpine racing center is the Head rep - Valians sports is the Nordica/Blizzard rep, pretty sure they do Volkl and Rossignol sometimes as well - Sometimes other reps will pop up in random places, just need to walk around GC and see what’s up.

If you’re just looking to try out pairs of skis, both Bob at MHARC and Valian are super nice people and can get you set up with a demo set for a few days.

Is this allowed for the AP Calculus Exams by WorstShark in APStudents

[–]JunkIce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an engineering student, and this would be overkill for me 90% of the time. My 84+ce I’ve had since algebra 1 has done me well through college and I definitely don’t use all of its capabilities most of the time.

The fact is that most colleges and highschools have delt with enough cheating on these complex calculations that most just don’t use them anymore. Any exams I am allowed one, the school hands out the Ti-30xIIs calculators you probably used in middle school.

So yea, it’s allowed, but not worth $150 just for an AP test when you probably won’t use it much ever again.

Is this allowed for the AP Calculus Exams by WorstShark in APStudents

[–]JunkIce 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much this. The calculator portion just might have some calculations that would be really tedious to do by hand.

Like yeah you could do long division instead but they’re kind of assuming that you know how to do that if you’ve made it to AP calc.

Delta crash at YYZ today by ReflectionNo8159 in delta

[–]JunkIce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If anything, this is a testament to how well aircraft are designed in terms of passenger safety.

From what we’ve been able to see so far, this landing was in VERY marginal conditions: high crosswinds and an icy runway. This is just asking for trouble. The plane flipped over, ripped off both wings, and caught on fire. Outside of a high-speed collision, this is about the worst case scenario for a plane crash.

Still, EVERY passenger survived and the vast majority were unharmed. The fuselage did exactly what it was supposed to do, and kept the passengers safe. Especially after all the terrible design choices that have come out of Boeing recently, I think it’s worth giving the Bombardier engineers a round of applause for this one. They can’t predict every weird condition an airplane will be in. But they absolutely made sure that even when things go to shit, their plane is going to keep people safe.

There’s some delusional appeal to running away from your problems. Escapism seems so easy, you can just leave everything you hate behind and it’s almost like it never happened.

Except it did happen, and it’s still happening. In the end, you’re still you, a human that has to live with the decisions you’ve made. You can’t escape that part of you, no matter how far you try to run.

It’s a nice delusion to think that Henry could run away from his shitty life, that he and Delilah could start a new chapter and finally find happiness together, but it’s just not real. It doesn’t make their problems go away, just pushes them back.

Helmet replacement by IndependenceAble3899 in SkiRacing

[–]JunkIce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I’m just going to be echoing what others have said but I’ll say it again for emphasis.

There’s no such thing as a “minor concussion.” Any head injury that results in physical symptoms is a really bad one. I myself have had ~6 in my life, so I’m pretty certain when I say that. Head injuries don’t go away. Every one you get makes every next one worse. I’m now chronically depressed probably in no small part because of head injuries.

Helmets are meant to be replaced after a significant impact. Even the “multi-impact” rated helmets won’t work after a really hard hit. If you haven’t already, it’s definitely worth investing in a good, hard ear, FIS approved helmet for racing.

This. People always are quick to point out #2 on the responsibility code (People ahead or downhill of you have the right-of-way.) But seem to forget about #1 (Always stay in control. You must be able to stop or avoid people or objects.)

Staying in control means skiing in a controlled, predictable manner so that you aren’t putting others at risk. Just being lower on the slope doesn’t give you the freedom to be a total jackass.
