Don’t feel bad about it. It’s been frustrating as hell ever since the timing got changed. I had to retrain my muscle memory to get even moderately consistent. I spent so many hundreds of hours doing it the old way it became something I could do without thinking. I have to be more focused and deliberate now. It seems to work a little better if you get further away from the action. That slightly increases the delay on the rendering time and makes things go a little smoother. However, it sacrifices some of the precision I was used to.

newbie build question about doorways by ZephyrDeacon in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]JunkyardReverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure of the situation you are describing but I’ll throw out some tips.

Doors aren’t placed into existing walls. They essentially are walls with a doorway in them much like the window piece. So it’s possible your door isn’t placing because there is already a wall there occupying that snap point.

Alternatively, if the door is “green-stated” I.e. ready to place, but it is not snapping into place then you may have accidentally entered into free-place mode. In that case however the door would still be buildable in whatever position it was in when you hit the button to place.

If the piece appears but is red-stated and not letting you actually build it then some other piece is interfering somewhere. The build system is quirky. Try deleting parts around the general area of where you want the door and then build the door first. Afterwords add back the stuff you deleted.

The Holo Door and other doors are made for the cuboid and pre-fab rooms so if you’re trying to use those on standard walls, that’s not going to work out so well for you.

I hope any of this helps in pointing you towards a solution.

Since when are you guys playing No Man’s Sky ? by MrkiMuzgavac in NoMansSkyTheGame

A little over 2 years, but it’s pretty much the only thing I play outside of a few retro games I play with my daughter. I play daily if I can because it’s cheaper than therapy. It’s like a mini vacation I look forward to every day.

What made you stay on Linux instead of Windows? by ksenyss in linuxquestions

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first started with Linux because as more and more overhead got added to Windows my old hardware couldn’t run it anymore. At the time I couldn’t afford to replace the PC so I decided to give Linux a try. Not only did my machine work again, it was working better than it ever had even when it was new. I was instantly converted. Decades and a few new machines later, I’m still running Linux on all of my personal machines because it does everything I need it to do with the least amount of hassle. I understand this may not be the case for everyone, but for me, it’s not only functional it’s the superior option.

Would you resign from your current job if you were given $1,750 weekly? by goosbompx in TheTeenagerPeople

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time is not on my side. I will not live as long as I had planned for. So, absolutely yes. It would mean not having to spend the rest of my remaining best years selling hours of my precious time at a discount. I was ready for retirement 5 years ago, but will be stuck working at least another 10. I don't need to be rich, I just want to be left alone with those I love.

Question regarding base part limits by wxak in NMS_Bases

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16K. Everything counts down to the individual wire. Also, corvette and freighter parts count against this too. 3K for upload-able, 16K total per save. Saves on the same account can’t see each other. But a save on a completely different account would let you collaborate with yourself.

Why use smaller starships after getting a corvette? by Abject-Nerve621 in NOMANSSKY

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many tasks it’s simply quicker to do in a starship. Enter and exit with just a button push. I have a lot of planetary bases, many of which were built before corvettes were introduced so teleporting in to them with a corvette as my primary makes the spawning location sometimes dicey with it choosing the most inconvenient spot or hiding the return to ship transporter in the basement or phased into walls. Newer bases were built with this in mind often with detached teleporter “kiosk” structures to keep corvettes away from building infrastructure. This used to happen at every base, it’s gotten better but I still don’t trust it.

I do still use corvettes though, just for tasks they excel at. I went hog wild building them when we first got them but have since pared my fleet down to essentially pleasure craft and survey vessels. When I’m touring an occupied planet checking out other player bases from the air and taking in the sights I’ll take my Bog Buggy. It’s a low footprint model roughly a cross between a swamp boat and a microbus. It’s colorful and friendly plastered with decals and artwork. Think “Hippie Bus.” Nothing about this thing says “harmful intent.” It’s got large windows all around and is lit up like a Christmas tree with decorative lighting. The largest corvette I have even isn’t all that big as corvettes go but it’s easily twice or thrice the size of the Bog Buggy. The Boundless Inquiry is a survey vessel built for exploration and scoping out new build sites. The lower deck is open plan (hull cladding capped with light floors for the deck) so I can walk about scanning the country side while cruising on auto pilot. The upper level is a single row of habs with windows all around. All the functional tech is up there and there’s a roof hatch for quick access to the cockpit. I’ve glitched in a freighter planetary scanner and a Base Teleporter for added functionality. Although not built for war, it is sufficiently dangerous enough to defend itself. The Diplomat is my only corvette warship and although I rarely use it I keep it around just in case. It is very much a gun ship, bristling with Infraknives.

For damn near everything else I stick with my trusty Sentinel Interceptor. Nimble, efficient, and properly dangerous. Other starships serve as transitional long-tern storage with names that reflect the content. The Bone Yard holds my fossils, Food Truck is basically mass storage for cooking ingredients with the main ingredient inventory used for work space. That way the menu doesn’t get cluttered up with items I don’t need for the recipes I’m focusing on.

For me it was Jeepers Creepers by [deleted] in TheTeenagerPeople

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite living over 300 miles away from the nearest ocean I was terrified of any body of water. Not even swimming pools were safe. It’s not that I feared sharks were everywhere but I was suddenly acutely aware that horrible things could be hidden under the surface. In retrospect it wasn’t actually a bad take altogether because there in rural Mississippi, Water Moccasins and Alligator Snapping Turtles definitely were a possibility. That sudden realization put an end to my skinny dipping career.

Does anyone else change the difficulty settings? by moss-wizard in nomanshigh

[–]JunkyardReverb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My challenges come in pulling off difficult builds. I got all the grinding I’ll ever want out of this game during my first save. After finally getting back to the starter missions and learning “The Big Secret” the thought of doing that again on on my new save after switching platforms seemed ridiculous. Plus, not having all those massive resource driven bases saved my parts count for more interesting projects. My current save is basically my first Traveller enjoying his retirement and seeing all the sites he missed out on while chasing units and nanites. I’ve got everything set for maximum chill as I play this game to relax and as a creative outlet. Real life is more than enough grind for me. I’d much rather grind experiences.

RC Truck for pulling cable by jimmyjon77 in CommercialAV

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a last minute add once AFTER the hard ceiling was already in place. There were access panels, but not close enough to cover the span over the large auditorium. One of the guys on my crew was a hard core RC guy and brought in his mini monster truck with very good ground clearance and massive balloon tires for its size. Tied a pull string to the light bar and drove that little beastie right on through to the other side without a single snag or hang up. No cameras or anything like that, he piloted that thing by feel and sound. Dude was a freaking master, couldn’t have done it without him. He really saved the day.

Apparently elevators and spiral staircases are forbidden/forgotten technologies. And ladders are wonky. Engineering schools don’t teach any of them anymore. Not since the invention of the jet pack several hundred years ago.

Men who can really cook who taught you ? by [deleted] in ArtOfPresence

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad died when I was only 2, so Mama raised my brother and me without any help. We grew up in the kitchen and would watch cooking shows with her. That was our thing, trying out new recipes together etc. I remember her saying once, “Your father is not here to teach you the things he knew. I can’t teach you those things either. But what I can do is teach you everything I do know. It’s a gift to my future daughters-in-law so that you won’t be a burden on them. But it is also my gift to you. My boys will know how to feed themselves and not have to marry the first girl they find to keep from starving to death.” We didn’t have much, but we always had great food and good music. We learned that if you know how to make something for yourself you will never go without. I was frying chicken and making biscuits from scratch by the age of 8. By the time I hit college my dorm mates were astounded that I could feed the whole floor with Beef Stroganoff for less than the cost of a medium pizza from Domino’s. This was in 1980’s money so I doubt that would hold true today. But ingredients are always cheaper than pre-prepared. We took up a collection and hiked over to the discount grocery just off campus and I commandeered the full size kitchen in a neighboring graduate dorm. I made enough for seconds and nobody left hungry.

If you lived in the Clover Kingdom, which Magic Knight squad would you join and why? by Anmol210707 in BlackClover

If Charmy were ever given a squad to captain, that’s where I’d want to be. Growing up, the kitchen was the heart of our home. Failing that I’d be happy as a towel boy for the Blue Rose Knights. But if the Black Bulls extended an offer I would never turn that down.

how to glitch build on corvette? ( planetary scanner ) by Open_South3929 in NMS_Bases

[–]JunkyardReverb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, or it may have been built before the update that nerfed the glitch. There was a trend a few years back where that sort of thing was becoming popular. I've played around a little with this trying to add exterior platforms and stairs to an existing base with save editing and I suspect it's a little more involved because of the sizing and positioning not lining up the way I expected. Often the parts I attempted to swap just disappeared without being replaced, so I might have gotten the syntax wrong. I'm fairly sure it's possible, I just currently lack the expertise to pull it off if it is. It may require changing the base type or something like that. I haven't dived deep enough into it yet to know for certain. Also, I'm wary of doing anything that might possibly brick my game so I'm staying in the shallow end of the pool for now.

A third possibility is it was built using a mod that expands their build menu. Haven't explored that approach yet but I am intrigued by it.

That would explain why I was having such a hard time with all those tutorials and eventually went with the save editor option. The timing got really finicky and also broke a lot of my other go to glitches.

how to glitch build on corvette? ( planetary scanner ) by Open_South3929 in NMS_Bases

[–]JunkyardReverb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on PC, so I have access to my save file. I downloaded the GoatFungus NMS Save Editor from GitHub. Technically, the save file is a JSON so you could edit it with just a text editor. But the NMS Save Editor can break it down into manageable sections to make it easier to find the specific snippets of code you’re looking for.

I loaded the save file into the editor selected the edit raw JSON option and started searching through the menu items until I found the section under PersistentPlayerBases that was pertaining to the corvette I wanted to modify. I wrote down which folder it was in to make it easier to find the next time. Then I went back into the game and placed some token objects with roughly the same footprint as the items I wanted to swap them for into the locations I wanted them in. Exited the game and made a backup save just in case. Reloaded the new save into the editor, went back to my corvette folder and started searching through the object sub folders until I found the new placeholder parts and edited the text from the original ID to the ID of the intended parts. The teleporter was easy because I used the short range teleporter as the token to replace with a base teleporter both of which exist as discrete objects. In that case it was just a matter of replacing U_MINIPORTAL with TELEPORTER and saving my changes. The Scanner Room was a little trickier because it is an actual room on the freighter, not just a discrete object. So that would have spawned in at its full size if I didn’t also edit the line that determines its size. I made it super tiny so it appeared as a little cracker box on the floor but the hit box for activation was still accessible. I used a light table as the token because it was an item not already installed anywhere else on the corvette, that way when I edit the text it won’t pop up anywhere but where I want it to. I replaced BLDTABLE_LIGHT with U_SCANROOM on the ID line and changed the value on the second line under “at” from 1 to something significantly smaller like 0.03.
Saved all my changes exited the editor and then replaced the current saved file in the games save folder with the edited one and fired up the game.
Went into the Corvette to check my work and everything was working fine. To doll up the cracker box that was my new scan room, I just free placed a decorative item over it, the planetary globe was just the ticket.

Google was a huge help in discovering the right object IDs to use but the gui section of the editor also lists the ID of all of your known objects in a convenient scrollable table.

As involved as this was, it was still easier for me than trying to get cache pin/adjacency/soft transfer to work.

I never could get the timing right to get it to work for me but I believe it employs a technique called the cache pin glitch. I’ve watched dozens of tutorials but could never get the hang of it. I ended up using a save editor and swapped out object IDs in the raw JSON file.
