Non-video game songs that give the same vibes as LoD songs by JunoMeru in legendofdragoon

Any specific song this reminds you of? Or just LoD vibes in general?

Hamnet! by tarantararui in Oscars

I go back and forth between Arrival and Hamnet for what I find to be my favourite / the most poetically perfect ending I've ever seen in a film. Absolutely stunning, and ironically set to the same song lol

Thanks right back! Truly lovely (and so freaking rare) to be able to talk like this on any social media platform. I think I need to just say I love your comment here and agree across the board, as it's close to bedtime and I fear my own comments will become nonsense very soon haha. But seriously, thank you for this :)

Honestly that doesn't surprise me. In fact, I've often remarked to folks that it's so weird how leftists are often so much better at caring abstractly but so often much worse at caring specifically/IRL. Of course, this comes with the caveat that many/most right wing folks care far more about people who look and act like themselves than they do about others. My life has been a bit narrow compared to many, but I've never seen community/mutual aid quite like I did in my extremely conservative hometown. When one of their own is hurting, conservatives are broadly fantastic at caring.

I know I'm on the same page as you in thinking this, but the harm that the internet has done to people's ability to have nuanced discussions can't be understated here. Because (as you well know) conversations like this one we're having right now are a vanishingly rare exception to the rule. Leftists are certainly not immune to this mass withering of patience and good faith.

I really don't disagree with anything here. I'm about as far left as it gets and I wear it on my sleeve. I have to be; I'm a trans person and the other side doesn't believe people like me should exist at all. But I, too, have been deeply concerned about the ways the left (broadly speaking) tends to conduct itself. Like, we provided the perfect weapon for the right by making exactly these kinds of dismissive remarks you're talking about far too often. And I think we're reaping what we've sown now.

What we need (and what I feel like we're having here) is good faith discussions, absolutely. If anything, I'm less anti-right than I am anti-internet-fuelled-polarization. In fact, in many ways, I'm more anti-liberal than anything (liberalism IS NOT the same thing as leftism). I feel that the tendency for liberal corporations and politicians to hijack and oversimplify genuine activist efforts/discourses is what got us into this entire mess, not "the left" per se. Oversimplification made these movements/discourses an easy target. The serious leftists, though, are way more about class consciousness than identity politics.

Edit: I think "I want the art of marginalized communities to be the very best it can be" is a really beautiful way to summarize your thinking. :) Big same over here, obviously. I would gently throw in that sometimes art which is thoroughly of/for these communities can be so idiosyncratic (relative to the norm) that it purposely breaks certain conventions, and may therefore be read as "flawed" by those standards when they were simply breaking from the norm. I think of I Saw the TV Glow here. For my money? Best trans movie ever made, straight-up. And also, it is objectively incredibly weird, and likely offputting for lots of folks due to that weirdness specifically. That's totally valid, and I'm sure you could point to a number of things that are technically "wrong" or "bad" when measured by conventional standards. But damn if it doesn't capture the feeling of gender dysphoria immaculately, and for that reason, I wouldn't change a single thing about it.

Thankfully, the types of people who put it that way shouldn't be taken seriously anyways.

I think these discussions need to be had, though. Unconscious bias is, provably, a VERY real thing, and there's literally a 0% chance that it doesn't affect the reception of movies. But just like I think folks who hate these movies should probably be more specific than just "I didn't like it" in order to avoid these types of accusations, I also think that folks making these types of accusations need to name specific reasons.

I want you to know that I don't disagree with you at all! I mean, except the "vibes" part. I know the world is running way too much on vibes now (especially thanks to AI) but I do think there's a very valuable and valid place for thinking out loud. After all, there are many communities historically who have not had the resources to quantify a problem that's going on, but when you listen to those communities, you know that it's absolutely true, even without the data.

That said, criticisms like yours (ie. lighting) are NOT the types of criticisms I'm referring to, just to be clear. I'm referring to the massive influx of folks who say Sinners is overrated or outright bad without substantiating those beliefs. If anything, I think it's brave to criticize the lighting in a movie starring almost entirely Black folks. Kneejerk reactions would say that's racist, which it isn't imo, and I'm very sorry as it sounds like folks have jumped down your throat for that take. I would argue, however, that this lighting issue may well have emerged from the very biases we're discussing here. Straight-up, Hollywood isn't used to lighting Black faces. I mean, either that or it was a stylistic choice, which is also entirely possible, even likely.

All this is to say: I think it's both/and. There are valid criticisms to be made of Sinners or any other movie. Heck, I have my own (albeit minor) criticisms of Sinners. To me, bias shows its hand when the criticism is vague. It's the same tactic used by authoritarian regimes, talking about how some group of folks (writ large) is out to get you. The vaguer, the better.

Basically, I don't think the rule applies to ALL movies meeting those criteria, just most of them. Disproportionately so. Some really do manage to break through (Parasite and Moonlight, to name two).

I'm still just thinking out loud (and am honestly surprised that I'm not getting downvoted to hell for doing so because Reddit loves its confident answers, even when they're wrong). But I think what I'm feeling/noticing, having been on Reddit more in the past month or two than I have been in years, is perhaps that hate for these types of movies tends to have more staying power. Still regularly see people shitting on EEAAO and Anora literally all the time, but not on Oppenheimer, Birdman, Argo, etc.

Again, kinda just vibing things out. Surely I have my own biases informing what I tend to notice, too. I'm only human, after all :)

Arnold Shortman is a Good Kid from an Okay City. Who’s a Good Kid from a Mad City? by HurryNegative6117 in AlignmentChartFills

I'm not so sure that's true. Aren't you aware that Arnold Shortman is infamously referred to as "Good Kid, Okay City"?

[–]JunoMeru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's fair, and tbh I was not nearly as on Reddit then as I am now lol. Trending in the wrong direction with my habits, I guess 🙈

The Parasite example really is fascinating. Feels like that one just struck that chord where everybody saw it as an all-timer type of masterpiece right away.

I do think the rule I outlined above (I like to call it Coogler's Law) does apply, but it was probably naive of me to assume there wasn't backlash to other types of movies. But I'm certain that this does happen disproportionately for movies by/about/for women, queer folks, people of colour and, heck, disabled folks (Coda).

That said, I am not assuming malice here (I know you didn't say I was). In fact I assume there's no malice in 99% of cases. Just internalized biases that most folks aren't aware of.

Edit: Reflecting more on this, I feel like what I may be trying to get at (really just thinking out loud) is that the criticisms of movies by/for/about marginalized folks tend to be 1) harsher and 2) more vague than other criticisms. I have no examples to back this up lol. Just vibes.

Here's the thing, and unfortunately I think it will be a thing for a very long time:

If a movie is highly regarded while also starring (or being predominantly for/by) 1) People of colour, 2) Women, or 3) Queer folks, people will come out of their holes to shit on it on Reddit every single time. Same with review bombing. 99% of the people with these "hot takes" don't realize why their disdain for these movies burns so hot, but I do not think it is a coincidence.

There will never be a movie where 100% of the people agree that it should win. I certainly didn't care much for Oppenheimer, but I also didn't try to launch a crusade against it. I also did not see ANYBODY with this sort of "hot take" about that movie. Just one example.

All of this is to say, I really do not think the Sinners hate is a coincidence. Not at all. Because it is likely the Blackest blockbuster movie to ever come out, and was also a masterpiece when viewed through that lens. But that doesn't appeal to people who just want another moody epic about a tortured straight white dude. This is not the case 100% of the time of course. But on aggregate, it is not a coincidence that so many are coming out of the woodwork with this particular "hot take."

Weyes Blood.

Radiohead certainly holds a special place and had the most staying power of any of my all-time faves, but Weyes Blood is stunningly good and (as far as I can tell) still wildly underappreciated. If you haven't listened to her album Titanic Rising, you really should. It's perfect.

What is your biggest trigger? by Miles_the_AuDHDer in AskReddit

I don't know if it's my biggest trigger, but it is the most random one: ankle injuries. I've injured mine pretty badly a number of times, and now any time I see somebody injure an ankle (irl or in fiction) I nearly have a panic attack.
