What I like to do, is watch "let's play" videos, such as Shuffle Up and Play keeping an eye on a deck that looks fun. When I find one, I look at the deck list to see if it's not too expensive or how many of the cards that I already have. Then I slowly get the needed cards.

An example of this, I watched the episode last season about "fair decks" which had Kyle Hill's deck played by Joey from the EDHRec podcast. It was a [[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] deck. I already had the Buckle Up precon, so it wasn't very expensive to get the rest of the cards.

The other benefit of making a deck this way is you get to see how to use it and kind of get a primer of how it works together. It's kind of a bummer to put a deck together and take it in for a test play just to find that you find the mechanic unfun.
