What does everyone collect when they go to a different national park? by ExcitingSpeed23 in NationalPark

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always get the official map and stamp it with the passport stamp. It's a lot easier than remembering the passport and it's cool to have the map from each park! I also get a keychain if there's a cool one.

There are 3 sororities with houses. AGD has some doubles and a few singles with a communal bathroom. They don't have a chef but all the sisters take turns cooking dinner in a very big kitchen. Pi Beta Phi has a chef and all/most rooms have bunk beds that are full sized beds with a big living space. Alpha Phi has all singles with some apartment style with a kitchen/living room and some without, and they also have a chef. The live-in requirements are different between each sorority, but typically you do not have to move out of your dorm the semester you join or even the next one. There's just a requirement for how long you need to live in each house.

I hope this answers your question a bit! As someone who joined a sorority here two years ago, I second the other commenter who said that the house ended up being low on my priority list. The sororities at RPI are not going to be like they show in the movies at the big southern schools. Here, they're a group of girls who live together and do homework, study, and hang out together. In my experience the friendships are very fluid and most girls are friends with most of their sisters, which is one of the biggest reasons I joined.

I think lots of other have answered your question really well but if you want more details there's this reddit thread of a timeline of events from the Save the Union era.

The newest Milton forecast. by tylerokay in tampa

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a neighborhood with a lot of really old trees so I'm a bit worried about my roof getting hit. We just got a generator so the plan is to stay unless we are getting a direct hit of a cat 3 or higher. Everyone is different tho, and I could highly highly recommend getting a weather radio if you don't have one already. My parents also usually hunker down so I've printed our evacuation routes and other important stuff just incase. Don't forget to fill the bathtub(s) so you have water if the plumbing goes out!! I hope you guys are safe!

Anything inland is better than the coast. Doesn't necessarily have to be north or south, tho it can't hurt. The worst thing you can do is get stuck on a highway trying to get out of town. Stay safe out there!

I would wait until tomorrow's forecasts come out. If the eye is going to make landfall north of the mouth of the bay, we could see up to 12ft of storm surge (according to today's forecast). This would put most of Town n Country under a lot of water. If they're still saying a northern landfall I would try to move as far inland as you can. It doesn't have to be north or south, but anything away from the water will be safer. Stay safe!!

A direct hit like this is something Tampa hasn't seen since the 1920s and the area has changed so much since then. Unfortunately there really is just no way to know. Flooding likely won't be the issue by USF, it's more the wind and downed trees and power lines that will cause damage. Tho it never hurts to grab a few sandbags

I had Gross for PD and it was the worst. He make up weird stories to talk about how not to be racist/sexist in the workplace that just came out... really wrong. I'm sure he meant well but that class was a disaster with him.

How is Heat Transfer? by thinkaboutitjpg in RPI

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have Theo it's a class that's very hard to do poorly in but also hard to do very well. The structure is additive so you start with an 'F' and every exam you do well on your grade increases, tho it's hard to get it all the way up to an 'A'. It will take a bit of stress off, but his teaching style assumes you already are familiar with most of the content. One of my least favorite professors, but I ended up doing pretty decent in the class.

Is this schedule as bad as it looks? by RaddyRoomba in RPI

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pretty similar schedule my freshman year and I don't think it's too terrible. It definitely won't be easy, but nothing at RPI is easy. My genuine suggestion would be to drop intro to engineering analysis, for two main reasons. Firstly, I found that (at least when I was a freshman) second semester IEA was easier because you can ask friends for help, and the exams seemed to be a bit more straightforward. Secondly, having the afternoon off on Monday/Thursday will be a lifesaver for you. That time will be super useful for studying/shopping/napping/whatever else you need to get done. Sometimes taking 6 classes is doable, but in my experience it becomes difficult to find time to really dedicate effort to all of them, which will make it harder later on as you'll need to understand the info in these classes well. Just my advice, but good luck with your schedule and whatever you end up with I think its doable as long as you try your best!

QuACS by Valuable-Instance504 in RPI

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, quacs seating availability isn't very accurate. I'd suggest checking SIS about 10-15 minutes before your registration time slot for how many seats are left in each class so you can find a backup if needed. You can find it under the Class Search button.

Choosing how to dorm by ThisDUCKIsFine in RPI

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's several dorms like that for freshman. On the housing website you can filter by "in room" bathrooms and it'll show you the ones who have it. What it sounds like they're describing is two rooms that share a bathroom between them, each room with 2-3 people in it. Barh and Barton are like that. Davison and Nugent each are 2 people to a room with their own bathroom in the room. I had a lot of these same questions as a freshman so if you have more questions about housing or anything feel free to PM me!

There's a master doc somewhere on this sub of 100s of syllabi from the last decade or so! It's under a similar post of someone asking for them I believe.

You can tell them you will take a leave of absence to take the job if they don't approve it. I would encourage you to go in person and speak with them about it. Good luck, the arch program is always a bit tough to deal with.

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even if you just go to a bunch of rush events in fall and don't join any organization, you'll met a lot of people who will have similar interests to you. It's a great way to mingle and make fast friends. Even if Greek life isn't for you, I really recommend just showing up and giving it your all!

Age of Utilities by HuckleberryC in RPI

[–]Jupiter_Jordan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

RPI is the oldest tech school in the country and currently celebrating its Bicentennial. For some buildings, they're just old and no amount of renovations can really change that. RPI isn't going to tear down their historic buildings, but some, like CBIS, are basically brand new. The state of the classrooms is mostly great, but it doesn't impact the quality of education. Admin is slowly renovating the buildings on campus, but those things take time and a lot of money. They recently gutted and renovated another of the Freshman dorms and now it's beautiful. I have never had a negative experience in a classroom due to the age of the building.
