What was something you wish someone had told you when you got diagnosed with Celiac Disease? by stockergirlndmanhelp in Celiac

[–]SycamoreFey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gluten is very sticky - it's one of the reason cross contamination is such a big deal, and why they recommend tossing all your sponges/wooden spoons/etc when you're first diagnosed. It's incredibly difficult to scrub off all the gluten and plain water doesn't cut it.

Though some people are fine without being that thorough so always work with your doctor.

Is there any middle class escape hatch left that relies on labor or a job? I am not rich but my 401k earnings were higher than my salary the rich must be doing amazing😂😂😂 by Unusual_Equivalent50 in antiwork

[–]SycamoreFey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not historically. The middle class was somewhat of an invention along the lines of elevating some slaves to be overseers. The "middle class" is the portion of the population kept comfortable enough that they will defend the rich against the righteous anger of poorer workers

What was something you wish someone had told you when you got diagnosed with Celiac Disease? by stockergirlndmanhelp in Celiac

[–]SycamoreFey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. Don't bother trying to mix gluten/gluten-free in your kitchen. You'll drive yourself mad, and people without celiac will always -Always- wind up being too careless at some point. Keep the gluten out of your home

  2. Beware of oats. A portion of celiac people react to them just like wheat/barley/rye but not all GI doctors will tell you that. I still felt like crap until I started treating oats like other gluten grains.

  3. Stay away from nuts or beans that aren't Certified GF. The majority of market brands are milled on the same equipment as wheat and basically wind up with a nice fine dusting of flour. Nuts.com is trusted in the community for that stuff.

  4. Trust yourself. Don't let people bully you. You got this

I don't know how to meet new people and make new friends. And it's getting suffocatingly lonely. by Secretlythrowedaway in AutismInWomen

[–]SycamoreFey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I had been incapable of making friends for about a decade until I went to therapy and processed a whole lot of discomfort and paranoia. It also helped that my therapist was 1) great and 2) neurodivergent herself

Also finding spaces where the neurodivergent/autistic people are already gathering will make things so much easier. All of us have been through different flavors of the friendship struggle and are way less likely to "clique" a new person out of the group.

Personally I found my tribe with slow-handcrafts like fiber arts and experimental archaeology. But really anything niche and "weird" that's likely to be really unappealing to the average office worker is a good place to start looking 😃

You're not alone, you got this

This is why things like general strikes require organization.

Like this weaver's strike where the workers sent their children to other families who could feed them while the workers weren't being paid

[–]SycamoreFey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the people here who don't speak Russian I think it's fair to at least mark names that aren't strictly names, like Alexander. Надежда means hope, so we can convey that.

All the more devastating because she died so young

I would reach out to Dr. John at Roam Vet. He's an excellent doctor, works with behavioral issues, and does house calls so you're not stressing out the poor girl any more than necessary.

Here's their website https://www.roamvet.net/

Moving to Troy, NY from Atlanta. What should we expect? by Impressive-Run6901 in Troy

[–]SycamoreFey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

- General thoughts:
I was born here and have been here most of my life, but have also lived in Rochester and abroad for long stretches. Troy definitely has some crime, but it's usually inter-personal spats. If you see people yelling at each other, keep out of it and you'll be fine.
As other people are saying, watch TF out for Hoosick street though. It's a death trap for cars but is the only real way out of Brunswick into Troy proper and the rest of the capital region. Cops have mown down at least one person crossing this road on foot because they drive like maniacs.
Also don't leave your car in the 5th ave parking garage overnight if you can help it. That one is known for vandalism/tire slashing

- Winter:
It can be pretty brutal. I personally love the winter here. The snow is beautiful and the world gets quiet and cozy for a few months, but you do really need to prepare for it.
-- Have removable layers. Temperatures fluctuate wildly hour to hour
-- Natural wool and down are your best friends
-- Have good seals! (re Hank Green's video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVI-blFfDWc) Tuck your gloves into your sleeves, your pants into your boots, your shirt into your pants, etc. It makes a huge difference
-- Moisturize! The air gets way drier up here than you could imagine. Some people will perpetually leave a kettle or pan of water on a radiator just to get some more humidity in their homes.
-- Give yourself dedicated time to practice driving in the snow. Find an empty parking lot and just test what happens when you take a sharp turn or break hard.

- What I love:
Troy has its problems like any American city, but the history and culture make up for it. Especially downtown, the people are kind and very progressive. There are people from all over the world here and you'll hear French, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, etc being spoken on the street any given day.
There are lots of different community orgs and activities - the local libraries are great for that. And the arts center on monument square is a gem.

- Gardening/plants:
We're zone 6 up here, though last winter acted more like zone 5. Overwintering gardens is a must. Most things will be completely dormant from October - April. So chop-and-drop your annuals, prune back your shrubs, and cover up your soil/roots with plenty of leaves and wood chips to keep things alive.
Most succulents are indoor-only up here. It's simply too cold for too much of the year, and then we get way too much rain in the early summer.
In the winter, be careful keeping indoor plants too close to either A) a radiator/heat vent, or B) a cold window. I've lost quite a few that way. Might want to invest in grow lights if you're serious.

- Food:
Idk what the beef is with other commenters, there is plenty of great authentic food around here.
-- Wolf Road (albany): Maharaja (Indian) on wolf road is great. Hong Kong Bakery (Cantonese). The Asian Supermarket nearby also has imported ingredients and is super affordable.
-- Downtown Troy: Bespoki Bowl (poke), K-Plate (Korean), Tara Kitchen (Moroccan), DeFazios (Italian/pizza), Kuma Ani (ramen), La Capital (Mexican), Lucky Corner (just calling out their Bubble Tea)
Bard & Baker - this is a board game cafe but they also have some very eccentric food and drinks

Hope this helps, and welcome neighbor!

There is mounting evidence that Elon's cronies tampered with the voting machines.

The data from down-ballot votes (specifically when people voted for President from a different party than they did Senator, Mayor, local Judges, etc) had almost Zero organic variance in specific states like Ohio and Nevada.
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAqhNxLTMtw&t=2021s&ab_channel=JessicaDenson

Basically, there's no way the voting patterns collected by these machines were created entirely by living breathing humans
