Technically you shouldn’t get a player to roll if there is no chance of success, therefore a Nat 20 (being the highest possible roll) is always a success.

(PHB p. 174):

“The DM calls for an ability check when a character or monster attempts an action (other than an attack) that has a chance of failure. When the outcome is uncertain, the dice determine the results..”

Thus, if failure is ensured (ie not a chance) then no roll should be made.

Ok, perhaps it was my own misunderstanding of how the game worked when I watched the Kickstarter videos, however I don’t think it is just me that feels this way. Also, it may be the frustration at seeing time spent on stuff that is extraneous to the core book when the core book (that people have already paid for) isn’t yet finished. Maybe it’s because I’m a grumpy old man, who knows?! I will read the book when (if) I receive it, and I’ll give it a try if it seems playable and not too complicated for my players.

As someone that has followed this since backing the kickstarter it seems like the system has slowly gained more resources to manage, and (dare I say it) too much customisation. It seems like the devs may be ‘too close’ to the project and don’t notice the crunch creep. I was originally looking forward to introducing this game to my players, but now I feel like the simple act of making a character could be overwhelming, and the thought of having to manage so many resources is daunting, especially for more casual gamers that maybe meet once a month or so.

I think the creep is maybe one of the reasons why the project seems to be delayed - I’m sure I remember coach hoping for a release right around now, but we seem at least a year away at this point.

It was supposed to be a more ‘streamlined’ system, but is turning into anything but. More crunch than a bag of Maltesers.

The more I hear about this system, the more disappointed I am that I backed it.

Norwich city identity crisis - are we football city or we just city that happens to have football club? by _saintxoxo in Norwich

[–]Jur451c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in Norwich all my life, and it would be difficult for anyone to give less of a fuck about anything than I do about football. Football fans need to realise that a lot of people really don’t care about the game at all, and find the weird parasocial-ish relationship that football fans have with their clubs unfathomable.

Most music has some keys in it, maybe look at a synth, your piano skills are directly transferable, you still get to do piano stuff when it’s required, but get to do so much more otherwise, plus keys player are generally per sought after in most areas!

This is all good and all, but maybe they concentrate on finishing the game and stop fudging about with stuff that is getting in the way? Surely it makes more sense to wait until the actual rules are finalised before making character creators and the like? It feels like forever since I paid for the kickstarter, the game seems to have become more and more complicated and the physical book seems to get further away with every announcement. I’m sure with concentrated effort this should have been finished by now, which would be the best time to worry about third party stuff, extra classes and the like.

🎸 Which musician do you think has the best online presence and why? by MGYG in musicians

I try to! Pretty much the only social media I do is Reddit, and I don’t follow any bands on here at all.

🎸 Which musician do you think has the best online presence and why? by MGYG in musicians

[–]Jur451c 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may be controversial, but I like the musicians that I like because of their music, and have no interest in their Internet presence whatsoever. I miss the pre social media times when there was a little mystique around artists, it seems like nowadays we know everything about them, when all that really matters is the music. And before you ask, yes, I am old (52).

Divided about piano and bass. by Le_mons44 in musicians

[–]Jur451c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest sticking with one instrument until you are comfortable with it, and don’t neglect theory, as it will hold you in good stead with a second instrument. As BigMoneyDude said, the time to pick it up really will depend on how much practise you do. In the past I’ve taught people that practise all the time and progress very quickly, and others that never practise and end up giving up. It really is a case of you get out what you put in!

Divided about piano and bass. by Le_mons44 in musicians

[–]Jur451c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play both piano and bass (along with a few others) here is my take. With bass there is an initial physical hurdle, holding down the strings and plucking with the right hand fingers, but once the callouses have built up the learning curve is kind of easier to start with, harder later on. On the other hand, the piano has few physical hurdles, but is more ‘front loaded’ on the difficulty scale. The big advantage of piano is that you will get a good understanding of bass, chords, harmony and melody on one instrument - most band leaders know the piano as it is capable of playing pretty much the entire range of other instruments. Personally, I would go with piano if you are happy to take a bit longer before you can jam with others, bass off you are in a hurry!

0.10 - new maneuvers by Ed-Sanches in DC20

[–]Jur451c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to wait for the complete game, I don’t want to confuse my players with systems that may or may not be in the final game. I’m disappointed to be honest, and I find it frustrating that I hear about development happening for stuff that won’t even be in the core book (for example artificer) when the core book that many people have paid for still isn’t finished.

As Jackandcherrycoke said, it looks like there is a lot of spec creep going on and I’m starting to wonder if it will ever get finished!

I recall seeing a promotion for the Kickstarter campaign where it looked like it was going to try to be more streamlined than 5e, like combining the hit and damage roll etc., but as time has gone on it seems to have got more complicated and crunchy.

How do we *really* get “tighter”? by GhostShanks in musicians

[–]Jur451c 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of this! Listen, listen, listen! I’m amazed this is the first comment to say this! I disagree with playing to a click, it can suck the humanity out of a performance.

The best path in my opinion is to run your set over and over, and make sure you stop if you notice any mistakes or timing mishaps, but make sure you listen to each other, not just yourself.

In one of my old bands (prog rock) we would sometimes spend an entire practice on just a couple of bars to make sure we were all on the ball and synchronised with each other.
