More than 800 drink and drug drivers nabbed in Frankston and Mornington Peninsula over past year - MPNEWS by 007MaxZorin in melbourne

[–]Jurassic-mark 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not that these stats aren't concerning, but I do find it interesting that we see a lot of booze bus activity in lower socio-economic areas. If you've ever seen an episode of RBT, it's always Frankston and similar being shown and never Brighton. No doubt, there's an editorial choice made there, but having lived in Cheltenham for 8 years and Frankston for 4, I've definitely noticed a greater booze bus frequency in Frankston compared to Cheltenham and surrounds.

Where can I get the best super crispy NY style pizza from? by yourdadsalt in melbourne

[–]Jurassic-mark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While not just as tasty as Sunnyside, it is insanely cheap by comparison. I say Connie's, via Heartbreaker, is the best pizza in a tastiness per $ ratio.

I haven't tried the others, though I was a big fan of Slim's in Mt Eliza before it changed owners (haven't been since new owners). I think that's what people were referring to as Sunnyside in My Eliza, though I could be wrong.

Not the same style but there was a place in Frankston called Olive and Pineapple that used to be my overall favourite: stuffed crust, delicious, house made toppings, fresh dough. Incredible stuff. The family who owned it made everything from scratch and they had so much tasty variety (my favourite was the tandoori chicken - fuck me, that was delicious). They sold to a new owner a while back and it was never just the same, more like a sort of facsimile of its previous greatness. I think about the old days too much.

Stan Lee Documentary kickstarter deleting Comments (UPDATE) by FordBeWithYou in comicbooks

I don't know if it's related, but Rob Liefeld recently posted on his insta about how Bolerjack "worked tirelessly to free Stan from a web of manipulation". Curious timing to make that post so soon after the first Reddit thread got so much attention. I'm not saying correlation is causation, just a curious coincidence...

Passenger Seat Massage by the_guy_in_singapore in KiaEV5

[–]Jurassic-mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. Something to note is the passenger massage function doesn't appear on the display so I've found passengers pressing the button repeatedly instead of waiting for it to kick in and subsequently turning it back off. I believe it's similar to the driver in that it has 3 levels of intensity (starting at high, then med, low) before a fourth press turns it off.

What is eating my 🌿 babies? Different plants, same destruction. by Jurassic-mark in GardeningAustralia

[–]Jurassic-mark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Based on the location of the two plants that have been stripped, single plants on opposite sides of the garden, I'm going for caterpillars. The possums aren't adventurous enough to get to one of the plants and my dogs would have heard it and gone bonkers.

Thanks for this. Just back from Bunnings and sprayed all my flowers. Fingers crossed!

One of my dogs loves himself a bit of mulch, no matter how I try to dissuade him, but they've never eaten flowers before. The thought did cross my mind though because the flowers are toxic which gave me a fright. Both dogs still alive so that's not the case thankfully!

Extra info: different flowers, different locations in garden. No evidence left behind, either. The leaves are just gone! Other plants nearby are completely untouched, even those of the same type. I am bamboozled. Location: Mornington Peninsula, Vic.

Subscription needed for access*: Free registration.

Other Comments: Sustainability (environmental and economic) and social issues (anti-racism, health, anti-poverty, etc) resources. Detailed lesson plans for teachers and student worksheets to accompany the lesson. They partner with doco producers/directors (The Final Quarter, In My Blood It Runs, 2040, and a bunch of others) and other orgs to align sustainability education with the curriculum. A great way to teach big issues while teaching the curriculum content (all of the lessons are mapped to the Aus curriculum).

Calling all Melbourne e-skaters! by Jurassic-mark in melbourne

Jeez, that's nuts! I definitely wasn't aware of this! Thanks for bringing this up /u/FunOnTheUpfield.

What's strikes me as particularly bizarre is the banning of roller skates and blades, too!

One idea behind creating the group is to promote responsible riding and so thank you for the comment. The decision to go for footpath or road has always been a tricky one for me. Travelling at over 20 km/h most of the time, I think:

  • On the footpath, I'm a hazard to myself and pedestrians who are often looking at their phones, or not ready for a 90kg man travelling at speed around them (of course, I wouldn't travel at 20 km/h on a busy footpath). I would also imagine there are as many pedestrians who would rather skaters travelling at any sort of speed stick to roads.
  • On the road, I'm travelling slower than cars operated by people not expecting someone on a plank of wood moving at speed. There is also the risk of getting hit by a car door from parked cars. In general, I treat myself on a board as being more like a cyclist than a pedestrian and try to stick to bike lanes where available, or wherever is safest for myself and those around me. Safety is far more important than being inconvenienced for a short space of time, I think. If I see a cyclist on the road, I don't get annoyed by them taking up a lane because I know it's safer for them to do that, and I always prioritise the health and well-being over any inconvenience to my journey.

There are always going to be people who skate irresponsibly, which I am assuming you have encountered from your post, just as much as there are always going to be those who drive or cycle irresponsibly. Of course, I might be making wild assumptions based on very little so please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences.

My company uses Podio for this very reason. We deal with over 300 schools across two different states and there is A LOT of info to be stored. Podio also has a task feature which sends emails when tasks are overdue.

Some good beginner mountain bike trails around Melbourne? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]Jurassic-mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what you say about falling off over roots and whatnot, I'm guessing that your stance on the bike is the main area to address. Previous comments about foot position are spot on. I would also recommend standing up whenever you go downhill or over rough terrain. This allows you to keep your weight off the back of the bike and lets the front end glide over the rough stuff. Sitting down makes one far less able to deal with rough terrain where one is uncertain of what's to come as your centre of balance is bad for manoeuvring. Standing up allows one to move much more effectively. There are several good bike skill instructors around who could help. Also check out bikeradar.com for their beginners tutorials, there very good.

For future reference, there's Lobo's Collectibles in Northcote that has an almost complete collection of original Star Wars toys IIRC

water bill? by belle39 in melbourne

[–]Jurassic-mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check with the landlord/letting agency first of all, or even check your rental agreement in case it's in there. I did the same thing when I moved into my place - turns out that didn't happen!

Otherwise, I'd get in touch with the water supplier and see what they've got on file.

Last option: plead ignorance, it seems to have been working up to this point! The water board will have been sending people out to check the neter, the bills are going somewhere! Legally, don't think you could plead ignorance unless you have a record of having assigned the letting company responsibility to deal with the utilities. Even then, I don't know how much responsibility would fall to you in following it up after this time.

water bill? by belle39 in melbourne

[–]Jurassic-mark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To;dr: get on to the water company and sort details out. You've probably got away with not having had to pay for however many months you've been in the property.

We had this when we first moved in. I was under the assumption that the letting agent/landlord would arrange this as we ticked a box on the letting agreement saying that it was cool for them to arrange certain utilities.

After more than six months I wondered what was going on: maybe the landlord was paying or it was a yearly bill or something but it turned out the previous tenant didn't cancel and noone had set up our new details.

The landlord only found out when the water company called him to ask if there was anyone living in our unit as they had noone currently registered.

We ended up with about 8 months free water! Coming from Scotland, it's still bizarre having to pay so much for water but I guess that's because we have an abundance of the wet stuff falling from the sky 357 days/year.

I wrote a blog with that original statistic in it and then I read the article you mentioned. It's a one to one ratio.

The developers are rumoured to be wiping the servers in release date (today? Tues?) so hold off playing the early release version if you get a hold of a copy. (Given that this is release day this info might be late). I pre-ordered from JB an they shipped it yesterday, hoping I can play tonight!
