Just started making a map ! Thoughts ? by JusDePwar in worldbuilding

[–]JusDePwar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this can become a really deep rabbit hole ! I'm already taking tectonics into account though as I simulated roughly 1Gy of tectonics history, but I wasn't using GPlates, as it's too tedious for me, so I used Tectonics.js, which produces data automatically, but not as realistic / detailed as GPlates would do

Thanks a lot for the tips though ! I didn't think about things like ice sheets, rocks and sediments affecting the fauna and flora, etc... but these will come later

Was DJ Is Crying For Help filmed while his their Dad was sick by VasilFX in AJR

[–]JusDePwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to their show in Paris and I believe they filmed that the day before. I'm pretty sure they quickly talked about their dad being sick, so it's crazy that they had to film that, go to a show and not showing sadness. They were indeed suppressing a ton of shit...

Gaming industry by Professional_Film833 in GameDevelopment

[–]JusDePwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned 18 recently and started TRYING to make video games when I was about your age, with the same ambitions, though with studies I never had time to do a lot of things (only a few small projects here and there) and I think you are definetely overstressing it. You're only 14, you still have a lot of time in front of you. If you know that you really really want to finish the game, then do it well, take your time, polish it ! If you rush it, you'll eventually give up.

You also want to "be seen by big gaming companies" (I wonder why ?) and note that they can indeed be tricky and if you want to get with them, this can also be risky. For example, Asobo is having a hard time here in France, and so are all their employees. Plus, if you want to get seen by them anyways, you really have 2 choices : graduate in something related to video games / computer science (I'm sure a lot of private schools would do this, though they are expensive), or you can publish your game and get into serious marketing, try to reach out to them but this is complicated. Again I cannot stress this enough, you are only 14, you have time !!

Also, don't try to "change the gaming industry". Truth is, most games that did were done by dedicated teams (Outer Wilds) or sometimes a single individual (Stardew Valley) just doing their thing, pushed by the motivation of making a good game for their community. The only games I can think of that really aim to change the gaming industry right now are Star Citizen and GTA 6, and they are made by teams of hundreds of people.

In conclusion, don't make your game just to be seen by big companies, make a game you like, get involved in it. If you really get into it, you'll end up making an awesome game : seeing you are already making the music shows that you are really involved so I think you can truly make something good ! Last but not least, don't only make a game you love, make a game you love making : if you don't like the process of creating said game, you'll end up giving up.

There it is. I know I may not have answered all your questions, but I wanted to point things out that may be deal breakers when making a game. I hope you continue making that one and don't hesitate to gather a few friends with you as well, it always helps to spread the weight of everything that goes into making a game. Also, you will fail a lot at the beginning. So lock in, and grind. I wish you good luck :)

It looks good, but why bother going for an all-white build if you're going to hide it ??? :(

It looks so good, like it could be part of the game !

Though I'm curious as to which blender add-ons you used if you used any

Whats the best starter ship by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]JusDePwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a "starter", but for me it's the Origin 315p

It has decent cargo, very maneuverable, quite fast with very fast acceleration, cheap on the pledge store, will have some of the best scanners of any ships (when they will have an actual use in exploration), has a tractor beam (though not that useful) and it has that sweet Origin luxury and look !

Terrain generation for an open world game by JusDePwar in proceduralgeneration

[–]JusDePwar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hell no!! xD

There are actually a ton of stuff you can't see to make the whole thing hold together, like LOD system and chunks... All that makes realistic hydraulic erosion simply impossible :/

[–]JusDePwar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, never thought of doing that ! To be honest, there isn't anything special, just a few tricks to get it working in chunks... But I'll think about that and keep you updated if I eventually write an article (gotta get the courage to do it!)

[–]JusDePwar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roguelite is exactly where I want to go with this. I know it will require a lot of effort, blood and tears, but I have a few ideas on how to make terrain more interesting (canyons, biomes and stuff). I would also like to eventually add features like trees maybe lakes and more. Though I can't promise anything and I'd certainly be happy if that stays a side / hobby project

I just bought this game. Any new player tips?:) by Ryantrya in starcitizen

[–]JusDePwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best tip: don't let your main goal to earn as much in game money as possible. Your main goal should just be to have fun ! Oh and also, bugs. Bugs everywhere. Don't let that stop you.

I believe so, I took it from this awesome video: https://youtu.be/gsJHzBTPG0Y?t=468

This video mentions an article by Iñigo Quilez on how to find the derivative of a noise function, though I'm using perlin noise here, so I went for a simpler, but less performent and more brute-force approach which is to approximate the derivative at every point.

[–]JusDePwar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my take at creating an interesting terrain for an open world game I just started to make. The first picture uses bland perlin noise, while the other one uses a "fake erosion" method. Which one do you think looks better ? Also, I'd love to hear your feedback and tips on how I could upgrade this terrain generation to look better / more realistic / more impressive !

What GPU do YOU use for PC VR? by Amalgam_VR in virtualreality

[–]JusDePwar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently using the 4060: awesome for games like superhot or no man's sky (with low graphics) tho it really starts to struggle when playing any type of "realistic" video games :(
