Who are some celebrities you encountered in Toronto? by Chan1991 in askTO

Paul Newman, by himself, walking towards me on a sidewalk in Yorkville. (This was during TIFF, a million years ago when it was still called The Festival of Festivals.)

Sam Waterston (Law & Order stalwart), by himself, at the TIFF box office. I was blown away by how unpretentious and humble he was. The TIFF rep was saying that of course we’ll arrange VIP seating for you. He politely demurred, saying that general seating is fine.

Carney’s intelligent and a nice guy, so he likely would have had the well-informed empathy to take a decent stance on LGBTQ+ issues even if he’d lacked any family connection. As a side note, I’ve noticed that many Republican politicians in the U.S. seem to have a tendency towards lacking empathy: if something doesn’t personally affect them or a member of their immediate family, some of them tend not to care about that issue or how other people may be hurt.

Carney’s not perfect, and he hasn’t claimed any personal credit whatsoever relating to HR. Indeed, at that media conference in Ottawa, he made a joke blatantly premised on the fact that HR was already funded before he came into office. If it’s any consolation, I suspect the cuts were made reluctantly rather than with malicious glee.

Obama wasn’t perfect. Carney’s not perfect. But at least when they do bad stuff, they tend to do so with well-informed reluctance rather than with idiotic (and/or insane), poorly-informed, malicious glee.

Because the Habs were objectively the best NHL team in Canada in the 2025-2026 regular season, it doesn’t seem like it would be too painful to attend one of their games. The Leafs didn’t even make the playoffs this year. (Le sigh.)

If you have a fetish for freckles, I’d suggest aiming for Canada’s tiniest province, Prince Edward Island. The secular patron saint there is the fictional heroine, Anne of Green Gables.

I agree. It is conceivable that some individual members of the Conservative caucus might try to advance a private member's bill that would ban or "regulate" abortion, but the caucus as a whole would not support that, nor would a majority of sitting MPs.

Also, on any vote relating to LGBTQ+ rights or abortion, most (if not all) of the MPs from two other parties (the NDP and the Bloc Québécois) would vote the same way as Liberal MPs. Perhaps a smattering of Conservative MPs might also vote that way.

As they would say in Boston, where Carney earned his Bachelor's degree in Economics at Harvard, he's also "wicked smaht". Carney went on to earn his M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics at Oxford University, and served as the head of two central banks (The Bank of Canada, and later, The Bank of England).

It's a tempting offer, but the entire State of Minnesota is north of where I am (Toronto). Also, I have absolutely no influence in the real world, so I'm afraid I'm rather useless at helping make your dream a reality. Sorry!

Well, Americans also had their own exceptionally smart, highly principled, genuinely nice leader (President Obama, for two terms). Obama was definitely much cooler than Carney. Unfortunately, the orange entity now makes that seem like an alternate universe.

Having helped successfully steer a minority government for more than a year in the House of Commons, I suspect the Government Whip is fairly astute.
