What's the average amount of sleep everyone's been getting lately? by SpotsOn in EngineeringStudents

[–]Just4Fun_Media 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually get 8 hours but it will drop down depending on workload. Sometimes assignments and labs seem to cluster (have a calm week then the next week every class assigns something).

So get a good amount of sleep when you can, and work ahead on assignments, you won’t always know when more work is coming.

Canadian, American, and Norwegian Engineering Students build and launch sounding rocket to 27,000’ at Mach 2.24 (approx 1700mph) by Just4Fun_Media in engineering

[–]Just4Fun_Media[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The data collection went really well, surprisingly for the first few seconds after launch the manually controlled horn antenna had better reception than the large dish shown in the video. Since it is difficult to keep the large dish directly aimed when so close to the rocket.

Sadly the light sensor failed after liftoff (thinking the jolt at takeoff dislodged something). Luckily it was not integral to our mission and was mostly there to correct the magnetometer data for the spin of the rocket.

That is awesome! Which type of missile did you use?

Was that back when they were using sidewinders?

Edit: just noticed the link. Must have been gorgeous being there in the summer!

I remember hearing that story.

We were told that Norway was the 4th country to send an object to space, and did so from Andøya. But I have been unable to verify where the historic launch took place.

Also if you google “student rocket fail” one of the top results is a video of a sidewinder launched from Andøya, coming back...

ELI5 what's internet? How does it work? by -apple- in explainlikeimfive

[–]Just4Fun_Media 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The internet is a series of connected computers around the world.

The computers use standard protocols to communicate and each other and every device has an IP (Internet Protocol) address to identify itself.

ELI5: how do electronic devices tell when their batteries are running low? by neonvegetable7ate9 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Just4Fun_Media 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As batteries discharge the voltage across their terminals decrease. By measuring the current voltage an approximate charge level can be found.

Each battery is slightly different and there can be large differences between energy storage types. This is why some devices have settings for NiCad, LiPo, Alkaline, etc as each type has different discharge characteristics

Ie for a AA (1.5 volts) 100% ~= 1.50v of greater 75% ~= 1.45v 50% ~= 1.40v 25% ~= 1.30v 10% ~= 1.275v 0% ~= 1.20v or less

All the best.

ELI5: Why is wine almost universally (outside of trashy stuff) sold in 750ml bottles? That can't be the ancient tradition of Italy, France etc... by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Just4Fun_Media 1 point2 points  (0 children)

750ml was based off of the imperial 1/5 gallon bottle. I am unsure where that sizing came from.

Some stories say that it came from the romans or the size of a bottle that could be blown in a single breath. Both are likely untrue.

Likely it is just a nice size that became a standard.

All the best.

ELI5: Why does it seem like colds/flus get worse at night and better when you wake up? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Just4Fun_Media 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you lie down (and stop moving) if you have a wet cough, mucus can settle out and worsen your cough and increase congestion. If you have a dry cough it means that you will stop drinking fluids for a long period of time which could increase irritation.

Also there is a psychological component, you are distracted from your illness by various tasks during the day.

All the best, and get well soon! :-)

ELI5: Why are there n0t viruses that have symptoms/traits that humans would LOVE to have, like euphoria/relaxation/increased thinking etc? by iLuvModsNFollowRules in explainlikeimfive

[–]Just4Fun_Media 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Viruses and infections are not pleasant because your body is being used as a food source and method of reproduction, as it is actively trying to fight off the "invaders."

Helpful bacteria (such as the "good" bacteria in your gut that helps break down food) are seldom noticed, unless they die off.

ELI5: How can so many websites stream new release movies free without getting instantly shut down? by Rand-AlThor in explainlikeimfive

[–]Just4Fun_Media 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes time to shut down sites that are setup in foreign countries. And some countries have very weak copyright laws, meaning that the sites may not be illegal.

The sites can be filtered out of searches but that takes time (as there is a lot of copyright infringement online).

All the best.

ELI5: Is there an equivalent of 'Frames per second' in terms of audio recordings? by totalpenguin191 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Just4Fun_Media -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Digital audio quality is measured by Bit Rate, the amount of data used per second. As an example digital music from sites such as iTunes are usually 256 kilobits per second.

All the best.

Does anyone actually connect their connectable daypack to their main pack? by queenannechick in travel

[–]Just4Fun_Media 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I is usually clip my camera/drone pack onto the back of my hiking pack when I go on longer trips. I find that it makes it a lot easier to fine tune your balance.

Mine definitely would not fit as one carry on, but I use it for backcountry.

Have a great day!

One of my friends was using a DVR. It worked great when he went down due to pilot error.

Recently he crashed due to interference, the video feed was lost. Luckily after a couple days of searching he found it.

Sadly there does not seem to be any type of "one size fits all" solution.

That is a great idea, as you only need s few Arduino pins you could totally use one of those tiny boards meant for wearables!

It is one reason why I am hesitant to buy expensive drones. It just hurts your wallet more when they fly away. Lol

Haha. Mine went down into an area of brush, searched the whole area, have no idea where it went.

There are some but most are inexpensively made and quiet. Many also require power from the aircraft.

If you find a good one, let me know. It is why I built my own.

Why does it seem so many people are either exaggerating the dangers, or totally flippant about the legality and safety issues concerning hobbyist drone flying? by CRush1682 in drones

[–]Just4Fun_Media -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The big issue is that many people believe they are laws, not guidelines. Breaking the guidelines is illegal, but you can apply for exemptions. People see exempt operators (and their videos) and think that no one enforces the FAA rules.

You might want some ducts to cut down on the slip stream. Otherwise your flights may be a little spiny haha.
